@foone@digipres.club you are, unfortunately.

a friend of mine who is a thousand times the cider coder I will ever be, who is pretty all on on ai - just short of the "I can't talk to you because I don't want to catch brain worms" level - told me "the code only has to run until you sell the company."

@BrideOfLinux@mastodon.opencloud.lu not even close to as much money as he'd pay under the tax. Less than 1%.

doesn't change your point, which I fully agree with, but let's be accurate.

@SeanCasten@mastodon.social the problem is that even THAT frame grants that originalism is an actual THING - that it's got some kind of intellectual validity, even if one based on a racist framework. it doesn't. it has always been pseudo-intellectual nonsense, a made up excuse for Scalia and his disciples to claim that whatever bullshit they made up this week wasn't just their political preferences dressed up. that somehow he had the unique ability to mind meld with the founders.

@SeanCasten@mastodon.social what an utterly bizarre take. you're acting like they don't understand the consequences of this course of action - when accomplishing those consequences is the whole POINT.

this is how the Roberts court works.

@smutmag@mstdn.social I agree with every single thing you say, but on top of that, R+J has, hands down, the best writing of any of Shakespeare's plays. two of my favorite speeches ("these violent delights have violent ends" and "I see Queen Mab hath been with you"), Romeo and Juliet's initial meeting is a contender for my favorite scene anywhere in Shakespeare, and... Mercutio. and Tybalt. (I have seen two performances of the play where the actors played the two as ex lovers and I CANNOT GET ENOUGH.)

@smutmag@mstdn.social and Romeo and Juliet is so much more universal.

and SHOCKINGLY feminist. I had probably seen it 20 times before I saw a version where Juliet climbs down off the balcony rather than Romeo climbing up to it, and it recontextualized the entire play for me. I reread it, and Juliet is really clearly portrayed as the smarter of the two, the one who is leading the relationship while Romeo is struggling just to keep up. she talks absolute circles around him... good thing the boy is pretty!

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden it is literally the patriarchy.

we have ONE ACTUAL ADVANTAGE over you - our clothes have pockets, therefore you need to ask us to help you carry things. if women's clothes had pockets you would soon realize we serve no actual purpose and then we'd be in trouble.

@futurebird@sauropods.win and realistically, I don't begrudge anybody making a living. if you were to tell me "hey, you can make $X writing a great book, or you turn that book into a series, which is slightly worse, but you make $5X for the sequel, $10X for the third book, maybe hey a movie or TV deal..." well I gotta tell you I wouldn't have to think very long about it :-)

@jilleduffy@mastodon.social I would contact a trust and estate lawyer. many are likely to be willing to give you this info for free.

As a lawyer, I would *never* trust information like this from an llm. I don't trust legal responses from an llm in my own field, using specialized llms; this is a high-stakes question and the reader does not have the expertise to identify errors or double check them.

shit, I was just That Guy, wasn't I. sorry.

@JHein@mastodon.social @RickiTarr@beige.party as a state and local tax lawyer who consults extensively on these issues, I can tell you for absolute certain that millionaires or billionaires hear about tax rates raising, they call my office, talk to us for a while, decide moving is not worth the energy, and don't do it.

@RickiTarr@beige.party I am a tax lawyer who frequently consults for ultra wealthy people trying leave text jurisdictions.

with California's proposed one-time wealth tax being the one exception in my career, people NEVER leave because of tax increases. I want to make this clear. NEVER. not one single time in my career.

people DO leave because they are about to make a gigantic amount of income - selling their company, usually - and don't want to pay tax on $100m in New York, so they move to Florida.

I think it quoted a hedge fund tax manager saying that they were unaware of this, and, well, that person is incompetent and should not have their job :-)

@PoetsOldBones@mastodon.social @knack@aus.social @nonehitwonder@tenforward.social so when you look at someone like, let's say, Alexander the Great - an imperialist who attempted global domination and engaged in mass enslavement, thousands of years before "capitalism" would be a word... what's your theory there? was Thutmose a capitalist? was dynastic Egypt a capitalist system? capitalism sucks, and it's a system that enables the worst in human nature to come out. but the problem is human nature. so build systems that fail well.

@smutmag@mstdn.social wow. first of all, I love the idea of a world where we are all traveling artists living in buses.

Applying that test so literally means he must have been against anyone doing anything but being a farmer. otherwise we all die.

second of all, it's absolutely the wrong way to look at it. there are a lot of things in the world that are great and small amounts but, yeah, wouldn't be ideal if everyone did them. is he against homosexuality for the same reason?

@nonehitwonder@tenforward.social @PoetsOldBones@mastodon.social @knack@aus.social no. I'm not saying a system with better fail-safes. the United States is actually a system with some great fail safes that has survived longer than any other similar system. and that's BAD. It let the United States get so powerful that when we finally did fail, we very well might take down the entire world with us. you can't build systems that are resistant to human nature, so build systems that break easily, with a minimum of death and disruption.

you're obviously wrong - like, REALLY wrong - but rather than actually try to defend your indefensible lack of knowledge of world history - or show that you're right (hey, I might be wrong!) you're immediately falling back on ad hominems.

you are not a serious person, and this is an interesting discussion. so good night!

@knack@aus.social @nonehitwonder@tenforward.social you don't. You can't magically will humanity into goodness; no matter how hard you try, money and power will always end up accretting and things will get bad. So instead, focus on building systems that fail well - that collapse easily and cleanly when they start being corrupted. Jefferson was right that you need a revolution every generation or two.
