Sincr ethic issues can no longer convince people to stop using AI, may I present a new argument for the AI optimists in our industry:

  • You should not support an industry that actively jeopardizes your own livelihood.

  • I am not talking about AI taking your jobs, guys, employers sure don’t care about that.

  • I am talking about what you do everyday is why your customers can’t afford to play your game, even when they are free to play.

  • You are making hardware too expensive for your players.

There are clear difference between

“being enabled to do things that you know but would otherwise not have time to attend to”

and

“being emboldened to do things that you don’t fully understand which would normally take more time”

All experts argument for the former are in no way an excuse for the latter.

And guess which ones are currently being pushed by corporate overlords?

“We do expect daily use of AI by every individual in the company and we are launching AI acceleration programs to support every role as part of our transformation.” - Gitlab CEO in its recent reorganization email that aim to close 30% of its locations, who hasn’t written a single blog post without AI in the subtitle for an entire year:

https://about.gitlab.com/blog/authors/bill-staples/

If this is not a bubble I don’t know what is, I hope it bursts soon for the love of our species.

3rd PSA: Dear students preparing for tech art interviews, make sure you understand what roughness and metallic really mean in PBR. I have seen so many students from art background who think the underlying maths are boring so they didn’t bother to check what phenomena PBR are trying to model. #GameDev #TechArt

Somedays I am just happy I am the person on the rendering team who can talk to the artists fluently and also the person on the art team who can talk to graphic programmers effectively.

So this is how the modern web works:

- it will load the page in full, often in blazing speed due to clever optimization to first paint and ready state, and they make sure bots can read the page in an accessible format too.

- then it will block us from interacting with them by JavaScript, load all the ads and prompts, and cut the page in half so that human have to pay the toll price, get tracked by data miners and sacrifice mobile battery.

This is all part of the web standard by the way.

2nd PSA: Dear students applying for tech art jobs: it is on you to declare which pages in your portfolio involves usage of GenAI and LLM, if you don’t declare them voluntarily and we caught it, the rest of your handmade demos might be disregarded due to trust issues. #GameDev #TechArt

Vinland Saga one of my favorite series and it accurately describes my life:

  • If 11st century is about running away from batshit crazy power-hungry warlords.

  • 21st century is about running away from batshit crazy power-hungry tech lords.

If you never visit the Games app settings on iOS or macOS, you won’t realize this is there. Reset identifier is a big give away. Apple spent years disrupting mobile analytics industry and now we give Apple the same data for free.

In China there is a joke where “Project Manager will task 10 women to birth a child in 1 month”.

And from the looks of current artificial intelligence landscape, this is exactly what win over investors.

The perfect productivity is thought to be achieved with Evangelion LCL like data centers where human copilots are just liability.

I just lol at this, and remember this was posted while Trump was in China (which I think neither OpenAI nor Anthropic managed to put their people on the trip, but Nvidia’s Jensen certainly was happy to go and sell some H200).

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place @lesley@mastodon.gamedev.place there are a few mask standards in china and some of them are indeed quite thick for everyday use, I mask up regularly in office, the gold standard ones do impede my breathing quite a bit. I guess in the US many people just don’t like any mask at all, which for privacy purposes I would think they should be into this sort of things.

The underlying economic problem is very similar: the more premium your experience becomes, the less accessible it is to the mass market. And for many executives, movies becoming a niche and premium experience instead of a cheap weekend entertainment is far more dangerous.

My takeaway on reading a recent thread on CS course is that: many universities are not teaching CS right, they are teaching Software Engineering courses. Classic CS courses are mostly Maths.

These are the games listed by "Games" app on my macOS Tahoe, as you can see, it lists games in my Steam library, fullscreen apps that triggers game mode accidentally (mpv), as well as just a random demo I built locally from GodotEngine...

@eviltrout@carpdiem.online could be an issue with your shader output on specific hardware, this kind of issue are usually due to a very bright pixel being picked up by bloom post processing. ask your users to disable bloom and see if the issue goes away, then investigate your shader output with renderdoc.

And all these are tracked as soon as you open 'Games' app and click 'Continue' on the first screen, no other actions or permissions are needed.

By the way I know the tracking is done across platforms because the toggle to "Combine Gaming Activity" are synced from macOS to iOS, and vice verse.

If LLM are in a drug store, they are in the herbal medicine section, when there are important people in your life who swear by them, know that it is always easy to get people hooked on what they don’t fully understand.

It is possible to leak the full game by mistake but also be the top Steam seller (just with pre-order), sometimes the world gives us some hope.

Also hope: a game can only be leaked and played early if it doesn’t require always online, almost a luxury in this era.
