@woo@fosstodon.org @confusedMiddleAgedDad@mastodon.social @kibcol1049@mstdn.social I spent 20 years deeply involved with the rave scene (1989 to 2009) and only knew of one (non-fatal) stabbing amongst our peers, which given our hedonistic lifestyles and the amount of substances consumed was quite surprising (but there was initially less toxic masculinity on that subculture compared to the 2010s) A stranger getting stabbed (where robbery isn't a motive) is *very* rare nowadays, I do wonder if there was more impulsive violence in 1970s/80s due to the effects of lead pollution from petrol? Although I don't think lads have got that much better behaved, but they do know they will be more likely to be caught if the commit violent crime, so those who have a better life to look forwards to than prison won't do it..

@woo@fosstodon.org @confusedMiddleAgedDad@mastodon.social @kibcol1049@mstdn.social that would make sense as I sometimes read old newspapers from my region (there's local history websites that publish bits of them) and if folk were getting stabbed all the time over petty disputes the offenders would be up before the Assizes just as they end up in Crown Court today! However in Essex even later middle aged white men have to be wary of carrying points and blades, a fair few *have* been stopped following incidents in Colchester and Clacton where men in their 70s have fought in car parks (some with weapons!)

@grb090423@mastodon.social @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv @stux@mstdn.social I think its only a practice in physically larger areas of USA with limited traffic enforcement? Everywhere else in the world, driving on the pedestrian sidewalk and/or into peoples gardens for whatever reason is not only straight up illegal and usually results in a traffic violation ticket (folk often have CCTV cameras around their homes!), but these areas are smaller so there's other obviously solid stuff like trees, walls, street furniture in the way so folk generally don't do it..

Also 15-20 years ago I was part of a forum for the rave scene which had a very popular online radio station. Some techbros from Northern Europe first tried to DDOS it, when that failed (we had way more bandwidth than they realised!) started putting fake "listeners" on the streams and then reporting them to various copyright authorities across Europe, to the point we had to stop our live DJ sets (as those couldn't report the music correct to copyright with the existing technology). Those techbros still run startups "helping artists recover copyright revenue " (I notice them monitoring the community radio stream all the time)

@paul@whisper.tf @cdarwin@c.im I wonder if "required" and "encouraged" have got mixed up (lost in translation, maybe sollen vs sollten?) Also as a foreign worker its possible her employers are being audited by the immigration authority - this is similar to the treatment a worker in UK gets if they are working for a decent employer, where I work the employment records of those who are from overseas do get audited and the govt checks they are getting sufficient hours (but in line with their permits) and being treated correctly. We also state upfront at interview what holiday entitlement someone gets and ask when/if they want to take their holidays, whilst its less than 36 days, there is a reasonable amount of paid holiday..

@MissGayle@urbanists.social @kevpeirce@aus.social the only rational reason I can think of for this would be that bots are hammering the servers to the extent that the site is badly lagged so legit customers can't view their data. in my country a PDF copy of a utility bill (which can be downloaded from the companies websites) can be used (along with other ID such as driving licence) as proof of address for background checks or credit agreements so its worth securing such sites, although accessing such data via a bot would require hacked user credentials as well..

@JugglingWithEggs@mstdn.social nothing on Anglia TV either but they are also notoriously bad on not picking up on anything happening at a weekend, plus a large fire in Essex and a stabbing in Luton appears to have taken up much of their resources.. It may not even be that the local media is *that* friendly to Reform, but the right wing hand them ready made content on a plate (similar to the blue light services) rather than them having to use resources to deploy reporters to where something is actually happening.

@TalktoBeverley@mas.to @CppGuy@infosec.space I was watching the news about Thetford (an hours drive from where I am), and a few weeks back was right in the middle of the village I work in swarmed over with armed police and MetPol CTP (counter terrorism protection) because folk had attempted to attack a Muslim social event in the region. As a brown person living in East Anglia I was wondering just how many of those folk rioting at Thetford were the same I was partying with at raves in the nearby forest, just 19 years ago - and who can I trust these days? (Clacton isn't exactly far from here either). These days I stay in the multicultural areas and avoid the smaller towns and some coastal places (Felixstowe is to be fair OK)

more detail on BBC #Wales news - alas, the dispute started following a music event in #Cardiff and a trivial argument. It seems relatively light minimum tariff is due to the defendant handing himself in the next day, an early guilty plea (but to manslaughter rather than murder, presumably in the hope of further reducing the #prison time) and the person killed not being the actual target Lad apparently had 0 #criminal record before doing this - British society *really* needs to do something about #ToxicMasculinity - it is regularly claiming lives and overwhelming the crminal justice system in what is an otherwise relatively safe and prosperous country.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20y3vd50w1o

An angry middle aged white man in #Birmingham attacked several #Police officers after being prevented by the arrival of authorities from attacking a Black man he had cornered in his garden. He also threw boiling water at the Black man and a female Police officer (causing injury to both. It took multiple officers to arrest him (I'm surprised they didn't deploy Tasers, but maybe didn't have Taser trained units available) He pleaded guilty at #Court and got a 14 year sentence (will likely serve about 8-9 years inside) I couldn't find any previous for the offender, but this doesn't seem like normal behaviour at age 58 - I guess this is what these men mean by "take back are country?" #Crime #Midlandshttps://www.itv.com/news/central/2026-07-01/violent-thug-threw-boiling-water-over-police-officer-in-birmingham

Zara could well get in trouble (a formal report acts as the difference between Metpol treating it as a harmless prank or criminal damage), and it wouldn't delay the roadworks as the contractors get penalties if they don't do the work on time they get a certain window for the road closures and get fined if they do things outside this. I learned all this recently after speaking to Suffolk Highways as the electricity company had coned off a large portion of my street a day *before* the actual time (they told me that UKPN were likely to be fined for this as even they hadn't expected the roadworks to start on that day)

@joelvanderwerf@mastodon.social @HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social even UK Foundation licence (the lowest level) has quite a few questions on basic electrical safety precautions. One problem here with this comparison is you (understandably) need a licence to use most radio frequencies as these are a finite resource and direct harm can be caused to others by interference, but no such licence is needed to use social media and implementing one would be problematic (who would enforce it?) - TBH if it were even possible UK would have already done it by now (even the dog licence was abolished a few years back)

RE: https://mastodon.social/@br00t4c/116925742233650791 These claims from gammons are bullshit. Some migrant support centres might have free classes to train folk on basic road safety, but someone without correct immigration documents is never going to be able to get a UK driving licence (not even a provisional, which they need for practical driving lessons) as their immigration status is checked when applying for the licence! The quote from the law firm mentions David Blunkett as Home Secretary, which was over 22 years ago. There have been free/subsidised driving lessons for care workers, who already have legal immigration status and a provisional UK licence, and its only 3 lessons, they have to pay for the rest. Free lessons have also been made available for native British folk on benefits/with disabilities..

I'm no fan whatsoever of the Daily Mail, but I believe the Court case and verdict was fair (at least Harry seems willing to put his hand in his pocket to assist Doreen Lawrence, who appears to have been dragged into this case for some reason and isn't a celeb like the others) However I don't think its because the Press didn't *want* to use same surveillance tactics of 90s/00s - its more that they didn't use them because they no longer work as well in the modern era, mobile networks and emergency service comms are harder locked down (not like the days you could listen to the whole lot on a radio scanner), and celebs are more wary about their personal security and who they talk to.. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/jul/09/doreen-lawrence-legal-bill-failed-sue-daily-mail-prince-harry

@wendypalmer@mastodon.au interestingly in England and Wales (possibly Scotland/NI too, but they have different legal systems) you'd likely be justified for using the surveillance equipment *provided* the data was sent straight to safeguarding authorities, not shared on social media. Certainly no-one would face criminal charges for deploying it (unless it was done deliberately for harrasment, such as a teenager who was using it for bullying) Brits can (and do) use whatever covert/semi-covert recording kit they can get their hands on, even the old ladies walking dogs sometimes have semi-covert bodycams (due to concerns over angry men with big dogs behaving aggressively in dogwalking areas) https://becket-chambers.co.uk/articles/case-law-on-covert-recordings/

Large #wildfire in #Dunwich #Suffolk (an affluent coastal town, maybe familiar if you are a cyclist as there's a yearly ride from London to Dunwich) 200 people evacuated, "make pumps 15-20" incident (currently 14 Suffolk FRS appliances remaining on scene), brigade have declared major incident.. https://www.itv.com/news/anglia/2026-07-30/major-incident-declared-as-large-wildfire-rips-through-coastal-heathland

Some blighter scuffed front bumper of my #GolfGTI whilst it was parked (only a few months after I had to shell out for a whole side of paint due to a door getting dented by another bad #driver ) Took two evenings on my knees to buff out scuffed clearcoat and paint transfer (thankfully most went) and touch up the scratched part (took 2 tries to get a result I'm happy with) not perfect but good enough from 1 metre, and I don't fancy spending another couple of hundred for a repair (even SMART repairs aren't cheap these days) only to risk it happening again and having to worry about colour matches (there are at *least* 3 shades of Tornado Red ) I'm glad I bought the miniature buffer #CarMaintenance #repair #Bladibarsket

Replying to
@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @futurebird@sauropods.win I'm curious though - where are you that taxi operators still use VHF? In Suffolk they went to apps as early as 2010/2011, I noticed most of the VHF traffic I could pick up on my radio scanner disappeared.. Or are they charging £40 for the apps/mobile device that are more common nowadays? If so small wonder drivers would go to Uber..
