@phnt@fluffytail.org If winblows could install updates without spending ages restarting multiple times, during which the computer cannot be used, NPC's wouldn't complaint much about updates - but microsoft is just that incompetent. Part of freedom is the ability to choose to never update if you wish.

@darkcat09@gts.dc09.xyz @TindrasGrove@infosec.exchange The proprietary SIP MESSAGE channel SMS's could easily be encrypted properly, but the government doesn't allow that, as that would mean not being able to spy on SMS's.

@kirby@freerobuxextremist.com Since SIP MESSAGE needs to go in one end, navigate 10 proprietary message forwarding systems, then arrive at the destination, where another SIP MESSAGE queued for delivery.

@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz Yes, big heavy mini trucks have poor range, especially when hauling 500kg of dead weight. The range indicator may list 700km, but you don't even get half that.

@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz Most subcompact petrol cars made after 2000 will do 400+km on a tank while highway driving, which is convenient, as you don't need to fill up very often. Expensive petrol cars can do 1000+km on a tank; https://anonymousoverflow.privacyredirect.com/exchange/movies/questions/88162/did-jeremy-clarkson-really-make-it-to-blackpool-in-the-jaguar-on-one-tank-of-gas People wanted expensive electric cars to at least match the range of cheap subcompacts.

@reimu@mk.fumo.pictures @tyler@nicecrew.digital Yes. KiCad is straightforward provided you have a strong GNU/Mind. You start with the circuit design (which is a pain in the ass and can be skipped for simple designs where you're making a passive connector for example), then you lay out the pcb, add the edge cuts and put some nice labels and artwork on top and then run the Design Rules Check (and fix the actual issues and ignore the bloat ones). For any clocks below 24 MHz (like moderate speed SPI), you usually don't need to worry about impedance, decoupling and crosstalk at all - many electronic circuits cycle at 50kHz at most. Above 24MHz, proprietary physics starts biting - even 100MHz is bad, let alone 1GHz. What kind of circuit do you want to design?

@mangeurdenuage@shitposter.world @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org The contempt for the users freedom isn't limited to patent concerns when it comes to video codec acceleration (if that was the concern, most of the peripheral software would be free software, aside from the video acceleration, which you can do just fine without). Rather the concern is that the user could have software freedom - which is why for example AMD has put in the software license of the "AMD-GPU-PRO-EULA", the following text; "You may not: … use, modify and/or distribute any of the Software so that any part becomes subject to a Free Software License"

@snacks@netzsphaere.xyz It seems hydrogen is going to embrittle the crap out of a gas turbine unless it's specifically designed for hydrogen (high enough heat can keep hydrogen out of metal that is prone to hydrogen embrittlement, but I doubt all of the piping and all of the turbine will get hot enough). If you want to use hydrogen energy storage, it only makes sense to use fuel cells, as those are significantly more efficient than gas turbines.

You then download the torrent with a free software torrent client like qbittorrent, or deluge or transmission (not µtorrent proprietary malware). You'll also want to optionally use a VPN to avoid copyright trolls - wireguard is good VPN software, but needs to be configured (most VPN providers give you a wg .conf that routes all traffic).

@xaetacore@neondystopia.world Multiple passes is pointless - all you need is 1 pass. Typically to wipe a SSD, you do a blkdiscard, then do one complete overwrite with 0 and then do blkdiscard again and that's the best you can do. The only issue with 0's is that the SSD software could detect that you're overwriting with 0 and not actually erase anything - so a single pass of random bytes may not be a bad idea.

@anthk@neopaquita.es Being GPLvX-incompatible doesn't make a license proprietary. The gnuplot license is in fact a free license, as you can share modifications, although what it requires is so annoying that it barely qualifies for free. Gnuplot really should just be licensed under the AGPLv3-or-later. It'll clearly just take a little more work until texlive becomes free.
