@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @Hex@kolektiva.social I’m going to guess those tramlines weren’t subsidised and probably weren’t allowed develop property? The thing about public transport is that most of the benefits are external to the system. The users don’t get most of them so you can’t charge an economic fare. And the external costs of cars are *huge* but never accounted for or charged.

You don’t win an election under proportional representation unless you get to form the executive. FPTP brain is apparently unavoidable even for journalists who live under PR systems. (You can be the largest party but that doesn’t give you power unless you can form a coalition.)

@gbargoud@masto.nyc @Hex@kolektiva.social this: horses were bad actually. The whole car thing got out of control in exactly the way LLMs are prophesied to: wasting huge amounts of resources to solve problems that was already have better, cheaper solutions to.

Are people aware that you don’t have to use Google for search? Haven’t had to for ages? If they’ve destroyed their product, use another.

@ccferrie@mastodon.ie @yrrsinn@chaos.social getting ahead of the issue seems sensible. Waiting for it to be a real and intractable problem before doing anything about it is how we got *here* on fucking everything. Anyone trying to do the same to cats would be out of power in about ten minutes, as you know well.

@CordiallyChloe@tech.lgbt @alice@lgbtqia.space I find the unqualified “men do X stuff” to be often just wrong and awfully close to essentialism, but this one isn’t susceptible to that criticism. It’s a statement that is perfectly applicable to all men. You can disagree with it but you can’t logically not-all-men-it. I think they may be being a bit over emotional.

Long lenses compress perspective and make things that are far apart seem close together. I feel today is a good day to repeat the mantra “the camera always lies”. People’s media literacy is abysmal, even for the stuff that’s been around for ever. #photography

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie @clickhere@mastodon.ie we were sort of doing a “can we do without a car?” experiment and it turns out it’s not really practical week to week, never mind for the series of funerals down country we’ll have in next decade. Most of our routine travel is done by commuter train, tram and Dart but the exceptions just take too damn long.

@clickhere@mastodon.ie @sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie I’ve been carless for about six weeks due to the my previous tiny 2010 piece of crap keeling over and it’s an utter pain in the arse in suburban Dublin. Took me an hour and a half to do what would be a 20min round trip by car and a trip to the car dealer for a (small) EV replacement took all day. Even being close enough to the commuter train to hear station announcements on a still day only goes so far because the interconnections are still crap.

@dansup@mastodon.social normally I wouldn’t worry too much about ancient stuff but excluding four year old browsers is a bit much: Tailwind 4 is really for environments where you can control what browsers people use (corporate internal) or don’t care (stupid government departments for example) at the moment.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie the fear mongering claim was you'd need to spend 1/3 of the value of the car every 3-5 years. Apparently not the case: most manufacturers warrant the battery for 8 years/100,000km now.

Probably an hour and a half each way. We had a family cyclist fatality and there’s a certain lack of enthusiasm for it as a form of transport.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie Renault 5 in a nice bright yellow.:-) It's almost as small and cheap as you can really get and as a plus, isn't boring as fuck. And isn't *that* heavy. The predictions of battery death seem to be exaggerated and likely to be more so with a newer car. I didn't want to buy second hand so I'd get the benefit of recent tech improvements. 10-15 years (with reducing range) seems likely and I'd hope that greater availability of charging points would offset the range problem.
