@jwz@mastodon.social I mean, remember when BOY LONDON would sell merch with the fucking Reichsadler on it, and young people would just...wear it out?

@Colman@mastodon.ie @stavvers@masto.ai Look, I was raised Orthodox and it's kind of the reason I'm vegetarian today: you basically spend half the year as a strict vegan who for strange historical reasons can eat shellfish. Lent is a time spent several hours STANDING at church per day, prostrating yourself and repeating litanies and singing modal hymns.
Orthodox laity are closer to Catholic monks than anything the US can conjure up in its prosperity-gospel religions.

@FourT4@mastodonapp.uk I loved when that came up after an episode of Doctor Who. Yes, I have been affected by time-travellers fighting invisible monsters in rural Fra—oh, you meant Vincent Van Gogh's crushing depression, didn't you?

To enter out into that silence that was the city at eight o’clock of a misty evening in November, to put your feet upon that buckling concrete walk, to step over grassy seams and make your way, hands in pockets, through the silences, that was what Mr. Leonard Mead most dearly loved to do.

@randahl This is also one of the great stories of UK power generation, as well. And given coal-powered industry started here, it's even more symbolic.

@bkuhn@fedi.copyleft.org The way I fixed it in my head was when I memorised that if you leave out the second argument, it makes the link in the CWD with the name of the first argument. So obviously the first argument is the target, because the second argument is optional!

@maaikees I often use the story of the STB libraries to illustrate this, but usually as an argument for FOSS rather than anti-LLM.
Sean Barrett worked at game companies, writing performance-critical code in C that needed to not crash on people's PCs. He tells the stories about how everyone would just write libraries to solve problems that C left to the programmer, and then they'd have to re-write them from memory at the next games company where they worked because the code was the property of their old employer.
They'd lose time debugging the things, which was wasted as they often had done this debugging twice before!
So Barrett sat down on his own and wrote a bunch of the things he'd done in the past, and then just to ensure that they had the least friction whatsoever he put them out in the public domain. Like, HERE, now we can ALL stop rewriting this stuff!
He's even done contracting work where things like his codec libraries ended up being part of the collection as part of the contract. He got paid less, but then he had access to the library afterward for when he needed it.
And so do we!

@woozle @cwebber The worst is when the trolls argue that nobody ever dies of hunger: they're either dead (from some disease made worse by malnutrition) or they're alive and therefore not "starving". It's wild how much structure some of these people build around refusing to accept the world as it is.

@cwebber Yeah, and the thing is every time I hear this stuff I just know that if I pass their silly purity test to actually oppose their profligate cruelty, they'll write me off as an extreme obsessive. It's the infamous hypocrite/zealot dichotomy, which allows them to write off absolutely everyone who disagrees with them.
So I started taking this back to them, for a while. "If you're such a big fan of driving, what are you doing here instead of being out in traffic??"

@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network @cwebber@social.coop Shannon Vallor likes to posit LLMs as mirrors, rather than minds. I think I take more visceral enjoyment in using the recent Trash Future analogy that most people seem to treat them like wishing wells: just keep tossing coins in and making wishes, and scolding people for Not Believing.
