Evidence from the Netherlands shows that bike-friendly streets increase retail sales by up to 25%.
Regular cycling reduces risk of chronic illnesses by up to 27%, leading to fewer hospital admissions and lower medical costs. These benefits increase with age. Cycling infrastructure must be attractive, safe and inviting to older people.
Dutch cycling prevents around 6,500 premature deaths each year, saving the healthcare system €3 billion annually.

@nemorosa@mastodon.nu I definitely couldn’t. When I started research on a book about 1916 I spent hours getting my grandparents’ and a couple of others’ birth, marriage and death certificates. With the internet (and Irish government generosity) I now have thousands. If I were in other countries not so, though - they monetise these records

The Dublin Inquirer is a tiny but great newspaper in the investigative journalism tradition of the great papers. But it desperately needs subscribers. If you value truth in journalism in Ireland please subscribe.

All this fuss about e-scooters comes into balanced focus watching Reeling in the Years for 1985, when Spike Island was used to imprison joyriders, 40 years ago…

This map of fatal crashes in the first seven months of this year shows how dreadful our roads and driving are and how nothing, nothing is done about this. Garda image, from The Irish Times report on the death of Glen Hansard

@muddle@infosec.exchange Are we?
Was it for this the Wild Geese
Spread the grey wing on every tide?
For this that all that blood was shed,
For this Edward Fitzgerald died,
And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone,
All that delirium of the brave?
Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

@bike4climate@mastodon.nu It really should be a custom to bring TDs, MPs, MEPs, Congress members, etc out for a bike ride around their city followed by a cup of coffee, to open their eyes wide so they say "Ah, now I see!" and change their approach to legislation

@muddle@infosec.exchange It's mad that for centuries Gaelic Ireland's main influence was France, with Spain coming in second and Germany and north Africa tying for third, but since independence we gaze at the little bourgeoicity next door that Lawrence Durrell called Pudding Island!

@docjosiahboone@wien.rocks Tut tut. The traditional method is to get into the middle of a moving crowd and toss up a handful of little rectangular pages folded in half. Nowadays they can contain a web link to your information. Offering those plump gentlemen a free test for diabetes and heart risk could have been good too
