You'll see a lot of media coverage of strikes by university academic staff in the next weeks; so, whatever the immediate/local causes of industrial action, the underlying (albeit linked) factors are these:
-
the Govt. & political class no longer really value a strong university sector & treat it merely as a unprofitable personal service;
-
Universities' senior management have lost sight of the fact that their academic staff are vital to their institutions success.
As Jason Hickel argues:
'the tendency to equate capitalism with "markets and trade" naturalizes a system that is not natural, and prevents us from having a clear-eyed view of how it operates & how we might want to do things differently'...
he then offers a vg three part definition of capitalism:
-
Capitalism is built on enclosure & the construction of scarcity;
-
it requires perpetual expansion (growth);
-
economics decisions cannot be democratic.
