mastodon 4.7.2Soft-inked greetings from ThePurpleOctopus 🐙💜
We’re a plural system: several distinct people sharing one body and one life: Queer, non-binary, trans, pan, polyam and many-armed, we think in several directions at once.
We love curiosity, kindness, politics with teeth, art with feelings, proper science, languages, cats, cows, trains, and the Oxford comma.
Translator and Teacher by trade; Traveller by desire.
Here to listen, learn, tangle gently, and leave the tide warmer.

In those days, before the internet, before endocrinology, before the words transgender and gender identity had entered the languages of homo sapiens (actually, before homo sapiens had language proper), there were those who knew themselves to be other than what the world had named them.
And they were many.
In the beginning, there were the gender-diverse people of ancient civilizations: priests, warriors, healers, lovers, servants, rulers and rebels. Some were revered. Some were feared. Some were merely allowed to exist.
And the centuries passed.
Kingdoms rose and fell. Empires were built and burned. Religions declared what people were permitted to be. Physicians invented new words for old experiences. Governments invented new laws for policing them.
Still, the people remained.
Then came the twentieth century, and with it new knowledge. Physicians learned that bodies could be altered. Hormones could be administered. Names could be changed. Lives could be lived.
And for a brief moment, it seemed that perhaps the ancient question might finally have an answer:
“What if we simply let people become who they know themselves to be?”
But the enemies of freedom did not sleep.
They gathered in laboratories, churches, parliaments, newspapers and television studios. They forged accusations. They declared that trans people were a modern invention, despite the inconvenient existence of thousands of years of history.
And so began the Great Erasure.
They took the ancient records and said, “Those weren't trans people.”
They took the gender-diverse people of other cultures and said, “Those don't count.”
They took the pioneers of the twentieth century and said, “Those were merely confused.”
They took Stonewall and said, “They weren't there.”
They took the people standing beside them and said, “You have never existed.”
Yet the trans people endured.
They endured the laws.
They endured the ridicule.
They endured the doctors.
They endured the police.
They endured the newspapers.
They endured the people insisting that their existence was somehow historically impossible.
And still they stood.
For history is a stubborn thing.
You may burn a book.
You may alter a photograph.
You may rename a person.
You may pretend an entire generation never existed.
But you cannot make the people disappear simply by refusing to remember them.
And so the story continues.
Not because trans people suddenly appeared.
But because, after thousands of years of being told they were impossible, they finally became impossible to ignore.

Amsterdam Pride! 🏳️🌈💖
So many beautiful people, so many flags, so much colour and joy. My little queer heart is very, very happy. 🥹✨

Reporting live from Amsterdam Canal Pride! I am fulfilling my annual duty by partying extremely hard. I danced, I cheered, I waved at boats, and I may have smiled so much that my cheeks have filed a formal complaint. 💜
Queer joy is resistance. Today the canals belong to love, laughter, glitter, and wonderfully unapologetic people. My feet will forgive me eventually. Probably.

At the Pride March in Amsterdam now! 🏳️🌈✨
So lovely to be here, surrounded by so many wonderful, beautiful, delightfully queer people. 💜
This is what Pride feels like: community, joy, defiance, and a whole lot of fabulousness. 🥰🏳️⚧️

“Fascism is not a historical accident, but the logical continuation of liberal capitalism at the stage of monopoly.”
- Max Horkheimer
There is something almost offensively inconvenient about Horkheimer’s sentence.
It refuses the comforting story.
Fascism is not a monster that crawls out of the forest while respectable society watches helplessly from the window.
It does not require civilisation to suddenly disappear.
It can emerge from within existing institutions, existing hierarchies, existing economic relations.
That is the point.
When capital concentrates, inequality deepens and economic crises become structural rather than exceptional, the question becomes increasingly unpleasant: what happens when democracy starts getting in the way of concentrated power?
One possible answer is reform.
Another is repression.
And fascism is, among other things, a particularly vicious political answer to that contradiction.
It preserves hierarchy by redirecting popular anger away from the structures producing insecurity and towards convenient human targets.
The unemployed become lazy. The migrant becomes dangerous. The queer person becomes corrupting. The dissident becomes subversive.
The system remains innocent.
The victim becomes the problem.
And this is why I find the contemporary habit of treating fascism as something belonging exclusively to history so profoundly dangerous.
Fascism rarely introduces itself as:
Hello. I am fascism.
It tends to arrive as an administrative measure.
A moral panic.
A security policy.
A campaign against “degeneracy.”
A little restriction here.
A little dehumanisation there.
A political movement discovers that cruelty polls well, and suddenly cruelty acquires a press office.
Horkheimer was not offering a prophecy.
He was offering a warning about structure.
And structures do not care whether we find them aesthetically unpleasant.
They simply keep producing consequences.

I really need to stop reading all the trans-exclusionary stuff. It makes me angry. It makes me depressed. Frankly, my nervous system has filed a formal complaint.
Unfortunately, I also feel the need to document it. Screenshots. Dates. Names. Statements. The whole miserable little dossier.
Because one day, when the political weather changes, some of these people will suddenly insist they were always on our side. They will say they supported trans people, that they were merely asking questions, that they were always fighting for equality.
And I will remember.
Not because I enjoy keeping score. Not because I want revenge.
(I do enjoy both of these things, but...)
But because history has a nasty habit of being rewritten by people who know perfectly well what they said when it mattered.
I will not let that happen. Neither should you.
For future historians. For accountability. And because apparently somebody has to keep the fucking receipts.

Having a gloriously lazy day here, but a tiny professional PSA from your friendly neighbourhood linguist:
If any of you know of any work in translation, editing, proofreading, copywriting, content production, or anything similarly word-shaped, please let me know. 💜
I prefer English and German as target languages, but can accept work in French, Italian, Dutch, and several other European languages (please do inquire!).
Yes, I'll do language teaching as well. :)
(I am a qualified instructor for English and German)
I’m going to need some work over the next few weeks, so if you hear of anything, even a “hey, have you considered this?”, send it my way.
My bank account and I would both be extremely grateful. 😅
Signal boost appreciated. 🫶

Good morning! 🌸
Amsterdam, you've been an absolute delight. Now it's time for one of my favourite places: The Hague. 💛
A day of trains, pretty streets, good coffee, and undoubtedly making at least one questionable decision involving cake. Entirely by accident, of course. I'm an innocent little bean. 😇
Have a lovely Sunday, everyone! 🌷🚆
