Middle-aged know-it-all and newly-minted Irishman. He/him, cis.
We must stop the perpetual-GDP-growth insanity, property hoarding, and churches' influence in public institutions. Build active travel routes, not more bloody highways, and #UBI now please.

Born at 336.13ppm CO2.
More biscuit than man.

Not my site but something I whole-heartedly support - https://www.stoproaddeaths.ie/

Happy to have been able to get a COVID vaccination yesterday - for free! - despite feeling the effects today. Beats the ever-loving shit out of getting COVID itself, let me tell ya. Interested to see how the kids are this morning as they had the 'flu vaccine yesterday as well as the COVID one. I think it will be a quiet weekend 🙂

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk That's been observable for most of my life, at least. The exceptions - Paul Keating setting up superannuation, for example, or the Norwegian Oil Fund - are notable for their rare medium-to-long-term thinking (not to be confused with the "longtermism" cult of course).

This story has been breaking for a while, but it's time to turn up the flame on it - the Irish right-/far-right government are despicable in their complicity and profiteering from so many multinational corporations fucking over normal people, but in few ways as nakedly evil as in the fuckery with Aughinish Alumina. https://youtu.be/5bTxEeywVUA

@parismarx@mastodon.online I hope some enterprising architects are thinking about how to repurpose the datacentre buildings once this madness draws to a close - weatherproof and pest-free hydroponic farms, growing meat in vats instead of raising animals for slaughter, climate-controlled towns for people who hate nature - there must be some way we can turn them into a benefit that allows us to return land to the wild.

And we still haven't started hanging* landlords.

@afewbugs@social.coop @Nickiquote@mstdn.social @Lilysea@aus.social Good luck (genuinely) with convincing people - the hum of mowers *in the middle of a heatwave, and when the carists won't stop bitching about the price of fuel* is driving me slightly batty. The work I've put in previously to convince neighbours not to decimate the nature strips all the time seems to be insufficient or at least extremely temporary. I wonder about their cop-on, when the bloody grass dries out and goes yellow within a day - yet they persist.

RE: https://mstdn.social/@ukrdef/116975147225144093 IRONY (Gr. εἰρωνεία, from εἴρων, one who says less than he means, εἴρειν, to speak), a form of speech in which the real meaning is concealed or contradicted by the words used; it is particularly employed for the purpose of ridicule, mockery or contempt, frequently taking the form of sarcastic phrase. The word is frequently used figuratively, especially in such phrases as “the irony of fate,” of an issue or result that seems to contradict the previous state or condition. (from Wikisource)

KYIV POST: ‘Ukrainians, Have You No Empathy?’: Russians Cry on Camera as Ukraine Strikes More Wildberries Warehouses https://www.kyivpost.com/post/80996 Russian sellers wept on camera and asked Ukrainians whether they had empathy after new drone strikes hit Wildberries logistics centers near St. Petersburg. Ukraine says the retailer’s warehouses support Russia’s military logistics by supplying drone components, navigation equipment, and other gear. #EasternEurope #World #Ukraine

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green You underestimate Gina's influence and the stupidity of pollies. Plus, everyone's still buying the lie that fiat spending is limited by anything other than rules set by those who decide what to spend the "limited" money on. Instead of taxing the existence out of coal mining and establishing a fully comprehensive recycling industry for *all* "waste", the ALP are trying to appease mining unions while doing little to develop our ability to live within our planet's means.

@ratcatcher@beige.party @Ciarancuffe@mastodon.ie It's worse - the "no evidence" is around the alumina being used by weapons manufacturers in Russia. They state in the article that it goes to Russia for smelting, with the aluminium then exported.

Two questions present themselves to me.

  1. What the fuck do these megaminds think Russia does with the cash raised from these exports, assuming that's what's happening (I have a bridge they may be interested in buying...)?

  2. How do they say this shit with a straight face?
