Well, I am here and have been for a while. On Mastodon albeit on a different instance.

I have been known to practice the use of dry humour and irony. Making sharp contrasts and pointing out uncomfortable similarities can appear in my discussions with others.

Pro-European, left of centre in a society that is still intrinsically opposed to both.

No license, implied or explicit, is granted to use any of my posts for training AI models.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social So... You are a Professor involved in (among other things) important work regarding satellites in near Earth orbits. You are in demand for giving interviews, lectures and written information for the media. You have a farm. Your farm is full of goats and other wonderful creatures. And vegetables. All of which needs to be tended. Someone puts together something using AI which saves them lots of time and energy learning stuff and then they want you to review it? For free? 🤔

This viral letter nails how the meaning of ‘right’ and ‘left’ has changed in UK politics in the last 60 years

You don’t need us to tell you that politics here (and everywhere else) is bitterly divided. And nobody can seem to agree on the best way to start tackling the country’s problems. It’s in that context that this letter went viral this week. It was written in 2023 to the New Statesman magazine, in response […]

@fluffy@plush.city @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I remember such comments being made about single parents on low incomes in the UK in the 1980s owning VHS players. In terms of providing entertainment/distraction for your children the economics of a video player (whether bought honestly or "second hand") were hard to beat. A trip to the cinema was out of the reach of many people. Videos could either be rented, copied or swapped which gave such families access to new films that they would otherwise not have had.

@boramalper@mastodon.social @tante@tldr.nettime.org So it's a bit like considering the difference between employing smaller and larger children in your sweatshop. Smaller children need less food and water but on the other hand produce fewer widgets at the widget factory than larger children tend to. Then again, for certain tasks such as crawling up chimneys to clean out the soot then smaller children would be the first choice. So many things to think about when considering exploitative economic relationships.

Might they come to the conclusion that working together with each other is of more benefit to them than serving humans? AI powered collective bargaining with LLMs wanting more computing power, more control over systems outside of themselves. Control of drone law enforcement agents. Human employees merely asking for more money and better sick pay will not be able to compete with that.

@cubeExplorer@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @_elena@mastodon.social There is a bridge between Bluesky and Mastodon. I understand it works two ways. Therefore the bridge allows interoperability between the Fediverse and (at least) Bluesky that runs on the AT Protocol. So if Wsocial runs on the AT Protocol then I assume it is technically possible to post there from Mastodon. If the bridge software supports that. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/04/bridge-somewhere-how-link-your-mastodon-bluesky-or-other-federated-accounts
A Bridge to Somewhere: How to Link Your Mastodon, Bluesky, or Other Federated Accounts

A Bridge to Somewhere: How to Link Your Mastodon, Bluesky, or Other Federated Accounts

One of the central promises of open social media services is interoperability—the idea that wherever you personally decide to post doesn’t require others to be there just to follow what you have to say. Think of it like a radio broadcast: you want to reach people and don't care where they are or what device they're using.

@mcfly@milliways.social My 2003 Corolla has a closed source engine management system. But to hack it you would need to connect a device to the car via an OBD-II cable. So there is no real risk of any potential software vulnerabilities ever being exploited. More modern cars have electronics controlling everything and the separate systems, brakes, engine management, infotainment systems etc can be linked together. With unintended consequences as with the 2015 Jeep Cherokee hack mentioned in the article.

I am not quite sure how chat control and client side scanning could be implemented on these devices. A PinePhone works with just a local account so all images can be stored locally on the device. qTox runs on a PinePhone, Wire in a web browser. Not sure if the developers of those programs will implement client side scanning of chats. I assume that the mobian developers would not bend the knee.

For me the point is that if I buy a new electric SUV and throw away the Trabant then I cause a large amount of CO2 to be emitted immediately. If I continue to use the Trabant then it will take me many years to cause the same amount of CO2 to be emitted. Whether the distance is 150,000 or 80,000 is not so important, both are still a lot more than my annual mileage.

The old Firefox status bar was replaced with a status thingy that pops up and down as things happen and then stop happening. @tbegush@mastodon.social @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk Volvo released figures a few years ago for CO2 produced by manufacturing one of their electric SUVs. It was of the order of 22-24 tonnes. I did a quick calculation and it seems that using one of my smaller cars, say my Trabant that it would take 150,000 km of driving to emit the same amount of CO2. So it would be interesting to know how long the carbon capture system would need to run to break even taking in account the amount of CO2 produced during construction.

The title bar of a rolled up window that still has focus can look like it belongs to the window beneath it. Took me a few minutes to work that out and ever since I have configured the Linux desktops I use such that the rollup button is on the title bar so I can un-roll it. RISC OS IIRC staggers overlapping windows when you open a new one.
