he/him // early 20s // card-carrying Rustacean // audhd // combine every gay furry stereotype you can think of into a single person and you pretty much have me

i use NixOS btw. i am also NixOS's number 1 hater. ask me about why

world's only rustacean who admits rust has flaws and there are things it should not be used for. i could talk for half an hour about reasons i dislike the language (proc macros, consteval, compilation times, and the rust foundation going all in on LLMs to name just a few) and am an enough of an adult to acknowledge these flaws and still like it, and i don't get why more rustaceans can't be adults when talking to users of other languages. if you see a rustacean being a dick, point me at them

i try not to bite without a good reason, but i sometimes bite for very bad ones. please call me on it. i'm trying to be better about that.

I'm a simple man, I see furry art, I smash the boost button. i do occasionally (rarely) boost nsfw furry art (always cw'd as such). don't wanna see that? follow someone else

DMs open if you wanna chat, or if you'd like to commission custom software like a Discord/Signal/Matrix/etc bot or a small desktop app

I don't have a pfp because I'm waiting to commission one of my sona and I can't do that until I have a ref sheet (speaking of which, if you know anyone who does commissions of those, please point me their way)

fedi meta, anarchists
as an #actuallyautistic person who has always had a hard time intuiting unwritten rules, i gotta say i have not been loving the sentiment i have been seeing from leftists and anarchists telling me that their ideal society is one where no rules will be written, because which rules are necessary changes so frequently and every rule has exceptions and we can't write them *all* down and really the rules should be obvious to everyone, and everyone will be allowed and encouraged to enforce the unwritten rules through violence whether intentional or not it feels like they're telling me "I'm sure you'd be able to figure out the unwritten rules if your life depended on it" and then wondering why i don't like them must be i just want an excuse to be a bigot or a debatebro i guess #leftism #anarchism #FediMeta

@pluralistic@mamot.fr I have to say I disagree with you already. Perhaps this is my bias speaking, but it is hard for me not to classify a technology that relies on scraping the works of thousands of creative workers, many of whom are my colleagues, destroying websites and (as of recently) physical paper books in the process without a single care, as exceptionally wicked. Perhaps it is not exceptionally wicked solely because it makes living conditions (cost per kWh, noise, heat...) measurably worse near its factories, whether the residents of those places use the factory's products or not. Plenty of prior technologies have done that -- it's how "smog" became a word. But no prior technology has relied on destructively consuming human culture in order to sustain itself. https://www.404media.co/ai-companies-are-buying-tons-of-old-books-because-theyre-free-of-ai-slop/

@tofu@is-a.cat @voltrina@voidposter.club recaptcha collects personal information and, if it can't, gives the user an mturk task, so that google can make money. i really don't think that's comparable to a proof of work challenge. also, what would you rather sysadmins do? do you have another, more ethical piece of software in mind that they could defend their sites with? or should they simply let the continuous DDoS from LLM scrapers send their hosting bills into the stratosphere and/or knock them offline?

@Oggie@woof.group @ricmac@mastodon.social i still maintain that all concepts in computer science (FP, OOP, metaclasses, neural networks, JIT compilation, the whole shebang) were invented at MIT in the 60s and the entire field of computer science in the years since has been the process of fumblingly rediscovering what the lisp programmers already knew

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca some cursory research indicates DCH1 closed in 2021, and sites both with and without robots have air conditioning; however, a lot of sites have "AC issues" and/or save energy by not cooling the building much, and working temperatures of 78-80F are not uncommon. Still completely unacceptable. https://old.reddit.com/r/AmazonFC/comments/1f926t8/any_thoughts_on_this_ill_just_leave_this_here_i/
reddit

Any thoughts on this? I'll just leave this here. I will say that I have A/C in my building, but no robots. I have heard, however, about sites that have bad A/C.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz oh how fossbros love to point and laugh at microsoft submitting a "a bug in ffmpeg is breaking teams, you guys need to fix this NOW" bug report to ffmpeg when they don't have any sort of contract with ffmpeg and don't contribute to it monetarily, and the developers they submitted that bug report to are volunteers and then when the (also volunteer) developers of their favorite project accept money from a company they don't like, or accept LLM contributions, or license their code too restrictively, or too permissively, or refuse to remove a dependency that is maintained by a person who once said something bad, they flip out in exactly the same way

What? No, they're worse at logic than their older counterparts, actually. No, they've never been held accountable. What does that have to do with anything?

@helio@bolha.linux-br.org @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net please, let's not be elitist about this, and especially let's not victim blame. yes, eliminating windows (or at least running a script to remove the spyware) is important for not being spied on, but even if your end of the wire is completely secure, your ISP can spy on you (and if you use a VPN, your VPN provider can spy on you). you can never completely escape surveillance, and not everyone has the same threat model you do. more importantly, not using a monitor that has adware installed on it is also an important step, *and using Windows with a non-spyware monitor is measurably less bad than using Windows with a spyware monitor* even if you were right, this holier-than-thou bullshit would push away more people than it wakes up. this exact attitude is why people, complete non-techies and people who have full-fledged homelabs alike, hate the fediverse.
