Why do #Scwhartz spices exist? Scwhartz is more than ten times the price per kg of British Asian #spice. It comes in jars too small to season a lone stuffed lentil. Then I saw a photo of a spice rack.Weird device to store jars of uniform size, as if any real cook used all spices at similar rates. That's when it hit me. Scwhartz isn't about cooking. It's about display. Schwarz sells spices to people who don't use spices. Cynical, but genius. Marketing beats eating. High profits for decades.

It shows 100% of Conservative voters giving their second preference to Reform. That's the result I'll be watching. Another deal seems to be to give Mahmood & #BlueLabour a free run to continue to smash liberty, or at least to make no major retreat. Maybe in 6mo or a year, Andy will be strong enough to dump Mahmood. Maybe he will want to. But I think keeping Mahmood in place is clear signal of no early retreat from repression.

That's why the eventual solution to the #CubanMissileCrisis was unspoken agreement for both sides to back off and get their weapons out of each others faces. The current Russia–Europe confrontation might have been avoided if the history of October 1962 was better understood. NATO's quest for confrontation has been an almighty strategic disaster.

In the 1970s & 1980s the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (#CSCE) in Europe did hugely effective work on reducing tension and building co-operation between #NATO and the #WarsawPact. It's successor the #OSCE should have been the bedrock of European security after the Cold War. But instead, NATO fought hard to endure that military confrontation won.

I was raised around the corner from the Forty Foot swimming place in Sandycove, County Dublin. #BrendanBehan had upped and died while I was a toddler, but the sign was unchanged. Until one day in the early 70s, some feral pedant repainted the sign, with a full stop after "forty foot". My outrage was widely shsred. The dot was soon painted over. Later, women iniststed on swimming there too, which was great. But eventually they painted over the word "gentlemen", spoiling all the fun of trespass
