I’m a science fiction author and social media assistant here in Toronto.
Left-wing and agnostic. Here for friendly conversations and a little networking.
If you’re wanting to talk to me but feeling shy, try one of these topics: fitness, photography, nature, coffee, Spanish (I’m learning it), social justice, writing, food, your pets (I’m allergic but love hearing about them), or LGBTQ+ life.
Fellow bisexuals or demisexuals get bonus points. 😉

Regarding my last toot, a good family friend who was young, healthy, and had no risk factors for complications caught the flu last winter and ended up being hospitalized with pneumonia from it and then needed to be hospitalized again due to another secondary infection.
He was not vaccinated, and his recovery was painfully long and slow. We are so grateful that he’s still with us and doing well now.
Influenza is nothing to mess around with no matter who you are.

1) Having enough time for several long walks over the weekend.
2) Drinking cold, crisp water after a walk.
3) Seeing dozens of cute dogs who were out on walks with their humans this weekend.

I’m all stocked up on disposable face masks again.
It was a pleasant surprise to me to see how much wearing a mask helps on days when the pollen or pollution counts are high, too.
They’re not only for disease prevention.
I would have started wearing them decades ago if I had known they were helpful in those other situations, too.

The idea for this poll came from a recent conversation with my spouse.
In the past, they’ve generally been able to tell when someone has a crush on them, but as a friendly person myself I have a history of thinking others are just being friendly and sociable, too.
Sometimes I realized what was actually happening years later. 😂
Can you tell when someone has a crush on you?
Boosts are warmly welcomed.

I support small businesses as much as possible…but it’s really nice to know in advance if there’s anything I can actually eat there and if visitors have to walk into Mordor or climb 5,893 flights of steps in order to get there. 😂

Waiting in long lines to visit new restaurants, shops, or businesses is something I’ve never understood, although many folks in Toronto don’t feel the same way.
It’s one thing if it’s for a special event or something that is only available for a brief period of time, but if I can wait a week or two and have no lineup when I show up I will be choosing that option every time.
What’s something lighthearted about the culture or country you live in that you don’t understand?

@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de @snacktraces@hachyderm.io A few weeks ago I tried to visit a small business that only had a Facebook page. After travelling 45 minutes get there, I found their business all boarded up. They’d shut down and never updated their page with the news.
So disappointing.

It’s why I get so frustrated with businesses who only use Facebook, Instagram, or similar sites as their social media presence. (Instagram does the same thing).
What’s the point of having a “public” page if the general public cannot actually use it?

Which books do you wish would be made into tv shows or films?
My vote goes to “The Deep” by Rivers Solomon.
It’s the best mermaid story I’ve ever read, and the plot twists in it would look amazing on the big or small screen.

Today I finished reading Brideen by Kathleen McDonnell, a historical fiction novel about survivors of the Irish potato famine based on the life of one of the author’s ancestors.
It was a good story, and I liked the reasonable conjectures the author made when real historical documents could only go so far in sharing what actually occurred.

@ellenmorrisprewitt@writing.exchange Yes, exactly. You can barely see anything before it wants you to log in.
It’s totally fine if they advertise on facebook (or instagram, or what have you) as well…but if that’s the only option a lot of folks aren’t going to be able to figure out if they want to visit that business.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town I do not expect everyone to follow this protocol by any means, by the way! We all have different tolerance levels.
I believe in giving (some) people the benefit of the doubt as online communication can be tricky.
But as soon as there’s any indication that this is a pattern of behaviour as opposed to a misunderstanding or something, they’re no longer welcome on my timeline.
