Saying someone has "a cold" or "the flu" have such deep roots in common use. This is as much a question of linguistics as of medicine or biology.

As such, it carries with it all the fraught aspects of linguistic prescriptivism. Here, I'm thinking particularly about exercises of, and resistance to, authority.

These terms are like "consumption" or "the grippe" or "the flux". They are descriptive & symptomatic, first, foremost, and probably always, to some extent.

I still boggle at how new, still, molecular diagnostics are, and specifically how, out of all recorded history of disease, the COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented in the widespread deployment of them, revealing both their power & their limits.

@tty First off, and I'm sure they warn you too: It uses very strong magnets. So you need to not have anything on or in you susceptible to those. It is noisy. I choose to interpret it as a form of industrial music Last I checked, youtube had MRI sounds videos, if you want to set expectations. It can also be quite snug. One thing I really like is that they are super safe, compared to say X-ray techniques that you can (in principle) get too much of.

@shauna@social.coop

Thank you for this.

When I saw the news, I thought back to previous comments you've made about how important Hampshire has been to you.

I'm sorry it has come to this. I echo a lot of your concerns about what this means.

I've read about the struggles for Mills & for Antioch, and that Wells & Cazenovia both recently closed, and watched numerous mostly still small liberal arts colleges rush to rebrand themselves as "universities" all in dismay at the homogenization.

@jamey all good points. Thank you. I'm tamping down the urge to dig in around comparison of differences in "hard-line" approaches because that doesn't feel like it would be productive. I had not seen Christine's response yet (insert mutterings about the vagaries of my own attention management here) but I especially appreciate her highlighting the bit about "incorporating their workflows with ours" which I oppose & hadn't absorbed from my earlier skim. I would say by-and-large any such workflows are substantially not primarily those of the individual newcomers, but of their bosses and of the upstream AI companies. there is some scope for bricolage-types of individual creativity from whatever people put together but the bulk of those workflows are opaque, unsustainable, and exploitative @pho4cexa

@jamey@pho4cexa the context I apply to this, that I don't see represented in this thread but is perhaps left too implicit in Gingerich's blog post, is that what makes many of us think of SFC as "one of the good ones" is that it is staffed and led primarily by people with a deep and painful history of trying to do advocacy in organizations led by toxic, fundamentalist leaders entrenched into a refusenik position. We have sympathised with their aims and know they are trying to do better than what has failed before SFC, perhaps uniquely so, understand the limits of "just say no," embodied in a so-called leader that protected his own purity by expecting others to interact with the vast imperfect edges of the world that continued more tightly to enclose him. I read more than a little "love the sinner, hate the sin" into this call for discussion.

US traffic violence rant, homophobic slurs
@kirk@social.coop People follow speed limits when I am driving & they are behind me, because I follow the speed limit almost always now. I mean, they pass when they can. Sometimes they tailgate, which isn't great, but better than that they tailgate at higher speeds! But usually they have no choice but to suck it up because they know a car-car collision will be a bad time for them, however much they may hate me. I don't approach from the perspective of Following The Law so much as making a kind of work-to-rule resistance to all the things that make drivers behave badly.

@raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com bash is sort of a haven right now The disdain for it has left us in a state of benign neglect, without the pressures that have led other languages to a proliferation of package archives & dependency management created to try the impossible task of being all things to all people. Even the rise of fish & PowerShell on the one side and dash on the other reify the utility of this mode of working, something that so readily can be either interactive or scripted. There is a raft of scripting languages that can be used interactively but beyond newcomer introductions or troubleshooting I don't know that they get routine, continuous, ongoing use. does anyone live in, say, a ruby or python or lua prompt like many of us do a bash (or adjacent unix-like shell) prompt? (I mean, I'm sure there might be low exceptions-that-prove-the-rule for each. But I mean, is there a community?)

@skjeggtroll There's a reversible chemical reaction at work during carbonation: water + CO₂ on one side, carbonic acid on the other. This is distinct from dissolution of carbon dioxide in water but obviously they are connected. The interconversion is slow. So much so that there is a set of families of a biological catalyst (enzymes) evolved specifically to speed it up: Carbonic anhydrase. Temperature and pH levels come into play in the reaction in complex ways. Despite its continued, disasterously infamous rise, carbon dioxide is not a big component of air, though. Dissolved air is going to be mostly nitrogen, which is notoriously unreactive with water under any realistic tea making conditions, regardless of fashion. I'd be careful inferring to much from the behaviour of drinks, here. @virbonus @dtm @fesshole@mastodon.social
