Who would want to destroy the International Criminal Court? People who are worried about their very serious war crimes being prosecuted there, of course. Washington said it “would be watching closely” to see which allies help in its campaign against the court during a closed-door meeting this summer.

The true challenge before the Democratic Party is to prosecute the Republican Party for their many, many, many, many crimes including crimes against the Constitution. But I feel like the DCCC feels the Republicans are practically their friends compared to the DSA members of their own party. #uspol

I've pointed this out before but it's nice to see an article on it: International shipping is a problem that actually gets easier as we decarbonize, because it turns out that 40% of freight shipping tonnage and half of fuel spent on shipping is spent shipping other fossil fuel around the globe. Get rid of fossil fuel and half of our shipping problems go away! https://cleantechnica.com/2026/06/16/shipping-freight-energy-fossil-cargo/ #ClimateCrisis #RenewableEnergy

Trump Administration success stories, indirect and diametrically opposed to their actual intended policy:

  • making Americans eat less beef by making beef more expensive via batshit insane tariff policies

With Europe and the US in the grip of atmospheric blocking events / “heat domes”, I’ve seen renewed interest in geoengineering/SRM. A quick reminder that despite a lot of enthusiasm among laypeople, climate scientists are generally sour on the idea. A very important detail people don’t seem to grasp is that while geoengineering/SRM could help lower the *mean* temperature, it could actually make extreme heatwaves / “heat domes” worse by disrupting the global circulation of air https://news.mit.edu/2020/reflecting-sunlight-cool-planet-storm-0602 #ClimateCrisis #geoengineering

For anyone in Europe considering a heat pump but worried about the global warming potential of its refrigerant, you can always consider a heat pump which uses CO2 (a.k.a. "R-744") as its refrigerant. CO2 still has global warming potential of course, but it's among the lowest of any refrigerant you can get in a heat pump. (The CO2 used for R-744 is sourced from carbon capture anyway) #ClimateCrisis

One of my biggest, most hated lies (particularly when spread by Bitcoiners) is that gas flaring is good for the environment. No, no it is not. This is the worst and possibly most successful bit of greenwashing next to single use plastics. Idiots will routinely spout “It’s good that they’re doing this and it’s better than the alternative!” Methane having a much higher GWP than CO2 doesn’t mean gas flaring is “good for the environment”. The real alternative is Flare Gas Recovery Systems (FGRS), which can at least capture the gas rather than wasting it. #ClimateCrisis #greenwashing

Spain's grid still has a lot of problems, of course. They need more investment in BESS to transform curtailment and negative wholesale prices into a replacement for some of that gas balancing. They have early adopter syndrome in that much of their generation lacks grid-forming power electronics. Too much, it seems. But that fixes itself as new grid-forming generation capacity is deployed. They're also an excellent candidate for enhanced geothermal which can both help lower marginal costs with firm, flexible, dispatchable electricity as well as seasonal thermal energy storage. https://europeangeothermalcongress.eu/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/30-SPAIN-EGC-2025-country-update.pdf #RenewableEnergy

If we’re going to do geoengineering/SRM the first thing we need to do is have a computer model showing how it would work where scientists agree the benefits outweigh the costs. It seems most people interested in the topic aren’t actually interested in doing that work and skip straight to the part where they pollute the environment with ballons filled with a highly toxic, corrosive pollutant https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/science/in-2022-a-california-startup-began-floating-sulphur-filled-balloons-into-the-sky-to-dim-the-sun-and-sell-cooling-credits-within-weeks-mexico-had-banned-solar-geoengineering/amp_articleshow/132514514.cms #ClimateCrisis #geoengineering

SMR status update: same as it ever was. Two repurposed Russian naval reactors on a barge remain the only grid-connected SMRs in the world. They’re 35MW for a total of 70MW. China is still yet to produce a single grid connected SMR, though Linglong One (ACP100) may be soonish. Years after China started the ACP100 program it started working on Hualong One, a new domestic design for a traditional light water reactor. The first connected to the grid in 2021. There are now 10, with dozens more in the pipline. They produce 1.2GW each. https://interestingengineering.com/energy/china-hualong-one-reactor-hainan #nuclearpower

This is the most concrete concept I’ve seen for a hydrogen fuel cell aircraft that uses open fans / propfans driven by electric motors. This design solves problems with both propellers and ducted turbofans. Propellers hit a ceiling when their blade tips exceed the speed of sound which the tapered blades of a propfan solve. Ducted turbofans have gotten larger and larger to achieve higher bypass ratios, which means the duct gets heavier and heavier. Propfans ditch the duct but keep the fan. Hydrogen provides better energy-per-weight (specific energy) than jet fuel. So this design saves weight both on the fuel and the airframe. A lighter aircraft is a more efficient aircraft and efficiency is one of the top priorities in aviation. https://www.flightglobal.com/business-jets/2026/03/beyond-aero-picks-pusher-props-over-ducted-fans-as-it-advances-hydrogen-business-jet-past-pdr/

Gas plants for US data centers to be major source of climate change-linked emissions, report says. Dozens of planned gas plants to directly power data centers in the United States could emit as much greenhouse gas annually as ‌Australia or France, according to a report by an environmental group published on Wednesday. The Environmental Integrity Project reviewed 74 gas-fired U.S. power plant projects proposed or planned to provide electricity directly to data centers, which would sidestep the process to connect to the U.S. electric grid. It estimated that they would generate 143 gigawatts of electricity and result in 662 million tons per year of greenhouse gas emissions. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/gas-plants-us-data-centers-be-major-source-climate-change-linked-emissions-2026-07-01/ #ClimateCrisis #uspol

@Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe yeah, I know France recently switched gears and doubled down on nuclear, but it won't change the fact almost all the new capacity they're deploying is coming from renewables. At least they recognize that any new nuclear plants they construct aren't likely to start delivering power to the grid until at least the 2040s. Meanwhile France is lagging behind their decarbonization goals: while their grid is admirably 95% low-carbon electricity it accounts for less than half of the country's total energy use, which is over half from unelectrified fossil-driven sources. https://analysesetdonnees.rte-france.com/en/annual-review-2025/keyfindings
