I've had people ask before why I post art that's been drawn on lined or grid notebook paper and not blank drawing paper. It's honestly a big psychological hack: blank drawing paper is for "real" art and I'm afraid to mess it up, but art on lined paper is legally "a doodle" and the art cops have to let you walk even if it's bad

you know, a nice little thing that's quietly gotten better is how many video games a) present character genders as styles to pick from rather than an inalienable trait of you, the player and b) reassure you that you can change it later

GASLIGHTING OR AFFIRMATION?: Local woman overheard insisting three dozen times a day that her enormous dog is “so very small”
“He’s so tiny,” said mastodon user A Bad Idea, referring to Odin the Newfie, who is the size and weight of an adult human man. “Odin, you are so small. You are a baby.”
“I love my tiny little baby,” she exclaimed as Odin reared up on his hind legs and easily rested his saucer-sized paws on her shoulders. She’s five foot nine.
“Why is he so small!” she asked of the heavens as her dog licked her face while she was standing up.
When asked if he identified as small, Odin the Newfie flattened the reporter with a joyous leap, pinning them to the floor with seventy kilograms of muscle, and licked them senseless until they stopped asking questions and gave him cuddles.

I randomly stumbled on one of my old twitter posts where I marveled at one of the most clownshoes technical advertisements ever published: the Atari Jaguar's marketing materials claimed "an incredible 850 million pixels per inch rendering speed."
Read that again if your brain glossed over it.
I googled this quote to get a better image to make a new post about it. And Google's AI helpfully popped up to "inform" me that this is a "humorous misquote" and obviously the original said "850 million pixels per second."
No it didn't. That's a lie. Google is fucking gaslighting me. It clearly says "inch" right there in the scan of the marketing materials on archive dot org. My old post about it far predates this higher-quality scan, so I saw it in a completely different scan.
This post is taking a stand. A stand that Atari's marketing team, burdened with trying to pitch a horrible product, made a stupid typo 31 years ago and it's funny because it's REAL, dammit. The AI apocalypse can't take that from us.

There were times when Odin was younger that I deliberately shut him out of my room and he'd rattle the door and get told "no". So he learned that rattling it is rude, but now, when the door is closed but not specifically to keep him out, I have to pay attention for the sound of him trotting up to the door and then just standing there in complete silence, staring at it, psychically willing it to open
it keeps opening, so clearly he *does* have psychokinetic powers

"Hearing voices" happens to *almost everyone* at least a few times in their life, but people are often scared to admit they had a harmless, benign voice-hearing experience, or they even deny to themselves that it counted, because the phenomenon is associated with being extremely crazy and dangerous.
For example: have you ever *sworn* that you heard someone call your name, but no-one did? You can point what direction the voice came from in real physical space, but no-one's there? This happens to almost everyone at some point. That's "hearing voices." It's more likely to happen when you're stressed, tired, or really zoned out. Hearing someone calling for you is very common, but you also might swear you just heard your long-dead grandmother say her comforting catchphrase or your worst ex snarl something hurtful.
The fact that you might hear the voice of someone you know is dead, or get the sense that it's a powerful benevolent or malevolent entity's voice, leads many people to spiritual explanations. But it's just your own subconscious grabbing the microphone and noisy, messy brain signals cohering into something you can make sense of at the conscious level.
If voices repeatedly belittle you, threaten you, or urge you to do harmful things, you do need to get outside help to address the inner low-level conflicts that manifest in this high-level distress. But there are millions of people in the world who routinely hear harmless voices, and it's just another facet of the messy human experience. Many people can even sustain dialogue with their voices and find it a helpful way to sort out their thoughts.
And here's a very modern, technocentric metaphor that may help explain why voices can be so nonsensical or disconnected from what you were consciously thinking. Have you ever seen the video game "Hey You, Pikachu"? It has a very simple form of microphone voice control. To do voice recognition with so little processing power, it just takes anything you say and matches it to whichever of about a hundred game-related words the waveform resembles most. So you can say "Carrie's scared of bees" and it will hear "Caterpie".
The subconscious-to-voice wiring is doing something similar: compressing an infinite space of wibbly thought-signals into finite conscious constructs, and the meaning might get rather distorted in the process. It doesn't mean you're "crazy" if the result is sometimes rather strange or embarrassing.
Wow, I'm on a psychological longpost roll...

@plexus@toot.cat @bert_hubert@eupolicy.social it’s very similar to the antipattern among the queer community where it’s taken for granted that of course big, well-funded, mainstream cultural works aren’t going to be very queer, but when an independent queer author or studio puts out their plucky little piece of media, it gets put under a microscope and torn to shreds over every conceivable angle of criticism by the very people who say we need more queer media

incidentally, I am still open to finding a job I enjoy more
1) I work from home in Amsterdam. If you are also in Amsterdam, I can physically appear before you on a regular basis.
2) I am not at this exact second a Dutch citizen but I'm working on getting that sorted and finally getting my US passport shredded. I came into the country on a skilled worker visa. I can read Dutch easily and speak it okay
3) I am an infosec expert with a lot of experience reviewing C/C++ source code but I am open to tangentially related roles like malware analysis or optimization analysis, I'd like something fresh
4) I am an intermediate reader of Chinese who is constantly studying, improving, and interested in a role where being able to read Chinese is helpful.

one time, someone in my discord couldn't remember the name of Dixville Notch (the New England hamlet that has absurdly massively disproportionate election influence due to a weird technicality) and, trying to indicate the spirit of the abstract hypothetical New England town that shouldn't, improvised "Witch Slunt."
I think we should all say Witch Slunt. Witch Slunt deserves to be a social media discourse star
