@RickiTarr A. Music. Playing it with other people, going to see it, immersing myself in it to the exclusion of almost everything else. It's still one of the biggest parts of my life but when I was young I played for many hours most nights of the week and went to shows all the time. Haven't played with anyone in decades, or been to a show in longer than I can remember. B. Feeling zero need to prove myself to anyone. These two things are in tension.

@aegir@toot.wales it doesn't seem like he has the numbers. Either he's aiming for a top job in the next government (would be a bit odd as he's just given one up), or this is all a terribly inept strategy.

@alisynthesis@io.waxandleather.com My 3w Blackstar Fly does the job for me. Surprisingly good sound for a little plastic box, has an aux in and there's an optional expansion cabinet that I also like. I've heard good things about the Roland Cube line but don't have any direct experience with them.

@cybervegan @jpaskaruk I think a big part of what's working with these guys for so many people is that they're smuggling a lot of difficult stuff in underneath some very understandable elements, and have gotten the balance just right. A lot of it is down to the drummer, who is super solid and really makes it move. I suspect some of the undetected references are punk and postpunk. I'm thinking Au Pairs, Gang of Four, Wire, maybe even a bit of Killing Joke? Dancey, but sonically aggressive.

@Lana My understanding is that he was basically seen as an old fuddy duddy doing Baroque stuff well past the time that was cool and was only put back atop the leaderboard when later composers (particularly no. 2 and 3 on that leaderboard) were like "um, he's actually a genius, you guys". Certainly a powerful reminder in any case that "cool and popular" and "good" are far from synonymous.

@ScottStarkey The point is ultimately the same, though - giving people time and materials to explore their creativity eventually produces massive returns. But the problem is also the same - there's a certain kind of person who just looks at anything like this and only sees all the people who are benefitting, who are not creating an individually huge ROI, and who (crucially) are not them. For this person, everything is zero sum, so such "freeloading" must be ended in the name of "fairness".
