i like when the way someone types "a" or "an" before an acronym reveals something about how they pronounce it.

"an HTML file" okay, so you're an "aitch" person, not a "haitch" person.

"an SQLite file" you're pronouncing it "ess que ell ite"? i didn't realise the good doctor hipp had so many alt accounts.

"open a SSH connection" surely you don't pronounce that as "open a secure shell connection"? unless you just use "a" because the acronym starts with a consonant, against convention because the actual sound it makes is "ess"? or maybe you pronounce it "susush" or something? i don't know.

"a NT kernel update" you're just fucking with me, aren't you. you're not saying /əʔɛntiː/

"an CSV file" yep you're fucking with me

for the roughly 8% of uni students still generating their essays by hand: i regret to inform you that the word grammar checker (assigned green squiggle underline at birth, transitioned to double stroke blue underline. happy pride month everyone) has wisened up to several of my standard "word count reacher" tricks. it now suggests the following """fixes""":

  • "the aforementioned widgets" -> "the widgets"
  • "a number of gizmos" -> "many gizmos"
  • and, worst of all, my most reliable and enduring friend: "due to the fact that" -> "because"

horrifyingly enough, it's even beginning to discover and suggest the removal of redundant adjectives. it occasionally suggests replacements like "a reliable bedrock" -> "a bedrock".

we can argue about the more existentially/cosmically disturbing erosion of writer's voice into a homogeneous Microsoft Approved Standard Voice, but of far more concern is this blatant attempt on our god-given right to bloviate on assignments. if the only difference in the rubric for a distinction vs a high distinction is the word "remarkably" becoming "exceptionally", you better believe i'm expanding "john (20xx) shows" into "the study by john (20xx) reveals that a group of researchers were able to demonstrate that".

stay safe out there folks.

update to the uCar Fuel Policies in the EU: as an alternative to uCar fuel stations, third party providers such as Shell and BP can now set up their own fuel stations and sell their own fuel to uCar drivers. uCar will only charge a 5% distribution fee in this case. this nominal fee is present for the driver's safety.

uCar will also charge a 5% fee on any snacks, drinks, and other miscellanea sold in the shop. charging uCar customers more than competing car brand customers for fuel or shop items will result in immediate termination of your uCar Fuel Partner Licence. mentioning this policy to uCar drivers is a violation of the Licence. selling newspapers that contain stories about this policy is a violation of the Licence. selling newspapers that contain QR codes that link to websites that link to other websites or pages that mention this policy is a violation of the Licence.

outside of the EU, uCars are still restricted to using authorised uCar fuel stations only, where uCar charges a 15% distribution fee.

i'd forgotten the original said "ronald's universal number kounter", i remembered it as "runk's universal number kounter" because we make that stupid recursive acronym joke so much

QUESTION: mac runs an international DIY HRT store and has the weird habit of taking orders over the phone and writing the requests down "according to the customer's accents and spellings". he's been doing this for decades. he takes down the next batch of orders, all from trans women: an american, a kiwi, another american, another kiwi, and finally a brit. for efficiency, he only writes down the first letter of their orders. what does he write on his order sheet?

--- page break if you want to try figuring this out yourself (it's not worth trying) ---

ANSWER: old macdonald has a form: E, I, E, I, O.

--- page break ---

EXPLANATION: americans spell it "estrogen", kiwis pronounce it "istrogen", brits spell it "oestrogen"

"one of the benefits of closures/lambdas/whatever you want to call thems is how compact they are. the syntax for the identity closure could be as simple as a = x -> x, whereas an equivalent function might look like fn a(T x) -> T { return x }". rust: well, we're known for being pretty verbose... how does |x| x sound? python: got it. we love concise code so much that we made else if into elif. let's use a five-letter keyword for closures. the identity closure is lambda x: x c++: got it. the identity closure is [](auto x){return x;}

had a dream about a lateral question where tom asked something about "losing a single player match of squares and beeps". throughout the questions it became obvious that the question had actually happened to tom. eventually the guests realised the game was pong, but took a while to piece together that tom was so monumentally bad at video games, he managed to lose pong without an opponent (the original arcade pong doesn't have an AI opponent).

✨ python string length

🖥️ Ah, a classic question: How long is a piece of string? Unlike the cheeky philosophical retort however, this question has an answer in Python ⸻ and it's shockingly simple. 😎 The most common way to get the length of a string in the Python programming language is with the len() function. If you're feeling a little extra, though, here's a for loop that does the same thing:

ℹ️ The global average temperature has raised by 0.0003°C.

To: john.lecturer@pimentouniversity.edu.au

Subject: ABC301 Task 3 Questions

Sent at: 10:05 AM

Dearest Dr. Lecturer,

I am writing in regards to the ABC301 Task 3 requirements. Upon extensive examination of question 7, I am caught between two interpretations:

  1. The Flooble must be parallel to the Gumbit.
  2. The Flooble must be perpendicular to the Gumbit.

I cannot write 800 of the required 2,000 words until I know which of these is the case.

To summarise: Is the Flooble required to be parallel or perpendicular to the Gumbit?

Warmest regards,
Lynne

"favouriting" a post is a strong word, isn't it? i use it as a "like" button. i've favourited thousands of posts, but i only have a handful of actual favourite posts.

to all the people who've made posts such as "why don't sysadmins have dogs? they're cat people!" or left me replies like "i broadly agree with your statement": i'm sorry to tell you that despite the notification you received, your post is not actually one of my favourites. not every toot can be of @BenteliciousArt@troet.cafe calibre, as much as i wish it were so.

forza horizon 6 lets you choose your name, which is used in the satnav's voice lines. they don't have "lynne" (or any of its various forms), so i scrolled through the nickname list and settled on "woman", because i knew how funny it would sound to be addressed that way.

turns out it's even funnier than i thought. the satnav begins its directions like "okay woman. i've set a route for daikoku circuit". i like to imagine the horizon staff have given me a weirdly sexist GPS. "okay woman, don't get hysterical 🙄 the route is set, yeesh. must be that time of the month"

it's kind of incredible how twitter was so unbelievably influential that it convinced millions of people that the # symbol is itself called a "hashtag". they weren't even trying to do that. it's a hash that you use to tag things. a hash tag.

i think it was helped by nobody agreeing what # is even called. hash? pound? octothorpe? number sign? sharp? well the only app on my phone that uses it† says it's a hashtag‡ so that's what it is

† twitter was not the only app to use the hash symbol
‡ twitter did not say the symbol itself is a hashtag

exhausted and relenting after a fruitless hour of searching, i snuck out of the dark bedroom, dug my laptop out of my bag, logged on to the hotel wifi, and loaded up the "find my device" page. despite not having bought a data plan, i was able to ring my phone, as it had four bars of connection strength on "Airport Free Wi-Fi".

i'm listening to episode 189 of lateral and in the intro they discuss the idea of an "aesthetist" as opposed to an anaesthetist. tom mentions that "an" means without and "aesthe" comes from "sensation". they spend some time talking about this then move on without making the joke i immediately thought of: surely aesthetist is synonymous with sensationalist!

met someone lovely yesterday and she read a lengthy excerpt of a warframe fanfic she's working on. it was so fucking good, and like, in the exact way i wish my writing was good. she's so adept at describing appearances (which i'm awful at) and also at narrating thought processes and like, "stepping through the mental debugger" as it were (which i'm mediocre at).

we were introduced by a mutual friend and we weren't even originally planning to talk about writing, it just came up naturally. i shared something semi-decent that i've written and she then shared her thing. it kinda sounds silly to say but i was genuinely starstruck. it was like showing a very tired mason a whole cathedral

let's open some fan letters!

@ben@mastodon.lubar.me from ADDRESS WITHHELD @ben@mastodon.lubar.me to ask about the #warframe character "captain vor", and how his monologues rank in terms of "unwashed man" energy compared to the GNU/linux copypasta.

thanks for writing in, ben! it's a difficult question to answer for two reasons:

first: it's difficult enough to compare "Our love will be reborn as we feed on your divine blood. Our children will flourish without disease." to "[...] rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs [...]" that i think they're on another scale entirely.

second: i was distracted by laughing about having to rescue a star wars background extra named Deny Attack Reverse Victim and Offender.

if you want to send in a letter, call PHONE NUMBER RETIRED, send a letter to PO BOX RETIRED, or tweet out with the hashtag HASHTAG RETIRED!
