@Sh4d0w_H34rt@freeradical.zone @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social I'm on a #Librem5 and have several bank accounts in a few countries. All of their web apps work in Firefox without requiring an Android app. Two of them did claim to require a duopoly app so I walked in to a branch, said I have a #Linuxphone and will need to take my money elsewhere if they dont allow me to login using Firefox on my Linux phone or Linux PC. One of them simply clicked something on their workstation and said 'Oh sure you can log in on the browser now,' and the other bank sent me a physical token. #gnuLinux #YotLP #tYotLP #appdwang

@jon@social.vivaldi.net @h4890@merovingian.club My experience within my IRL circles is that people do not generally care enough directly about these issues to make any changes. However, they do care about social, political and other issues affecting their world, nation and daily life... so if you wait until they complain about any of these issues and then clearly link their issues to one of our solutions involving #privacy, #decentralisation, #digitalsovereignty, #opensource, #ethicaltech, etc. in a subtle and not-pushy way, you can have a good chance of success. Using this strategy, I managed to persuade all of my family members to #gnuLinux, and all of my family and most of my extended family + in-laws that I'm in contact with are now on #DeltaChat. @jon@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Btw, would be great to have a light stripped-down version of #Vivaldi without the any of the proprietary UI bits for people who prefer Open Source. You could even make it a paid offering like some other browsers. #FreeSoftware

@jon@social.vivaldi.net @h4890@merovingian.club My own recommendations for new users: OS : Buy a laptop and phone with #LinuxPreinstalled so you can to get full support. Browser : #BrowserSeparation - use a few trustworthy browsers, each for a different activity type. Mail client : #DeltaChat easiest encrypted mail setup in the world, or Thunderbird. Calendar client : OS default. Mail Service : #Chatmail for encrypted-only mail contacts, #Thundermail / #TBpro, #PurelyMail, Social : Mastodon & Fediverse in general, #Nostr. Office package : LibreOffice. Video conference : #JitsiMeet, #NextcloudTalk, or #SignalApp for close contacts.

@organicmaps @snue Trying to understand the actualy issue here: Are you saying that: 1) @fdroidorg mislabelled OM with the one or both of the Anti-feature labels? 2) You disagree with @fdroidorg that one or both of the labels should be classified as an Anti-feature in the first place? 3) Users should be allowed on F-droid installation to pick which "Anti-features" they want to disabled? 4) Something else? Specifically, are you saying that the mwm maps files are licensed under a Free license? I think the network "Anti-feature" can be avoided by making the download instance selectable or having a blank textbox where users can enter an alternative server or cdn instead of the OM one? Or are you opposed to doing that and want users to be tied to #OrganicMaps servers? I see also that the #CoMaps fork does not have either of these two "Anti-feature" labels applied? Hey @CoMaps how did you escape those two labels - would honestly like to know. Btw, I love Organic Maps and use it on Linux Mobile. I'm hope that this issue will be resolved so you can perhaps focus on the desktop version :) Flathub does not hide OM btw! #Fdroid #Antifeature #Antifeatures

@purism Kaspersky also agreed with this after their #iPhones were hacked: "The main reason for this incident is the proprietary nature of iOS... a “black box”, in which spyware like Triangulation can hide for years... a perfect haven for spyware... users are given the illusion of security associated with the complete opacity of the system. "What actually happens in iOS is unknown to cybersecurity experts, and the absence of news about attacks in no way indicates their being impossible – as we’ve just seen." https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/triangulation-attack-on-ios/48353/ A few other researchers did not shy away from calling the undocumented issue that made this possible a #backdoor! #OperationTriangulation #Apple #iOS #security #OpenSource #OpenSourceSecurity #FreeSoftware

I love the #gnome design but often have to install a distro using xorg with #jwm or #icewm for these folks. Please have options to reduce gnome memory usage to run like 300MB or lower. Lowest Ive been able to achieve is around 900MB on Alpine which was still a lot for my cousin's 3GB RAM laptop. #a11y #RAMpocalypse

@dos@social.librem.one @etbe@mastodon.nzoss.nz With automatic suspend after 1 minute on battery power enabled, yes it can last throughout the work day if you only need the phone for phone calls and SMS, as notifications for those come while device is suspended. However, if you need data notifications, like Signal calls and messages, Matrix, XMPP, Delta Chat, email, etc., you can't really use auto suspend all of the time.

  1. Which license are the compiled binary files available under? Is it a case of "open" but not "free" (as in freedom)?
  2. I agree it doesn't make it "bad" but that's not what the label says : ) Still, you should be able to solve this easily if you want by letting people use a different server/cdn. You don't have to agree with it as I'm sure you don't agree with all Google Play and Apple Store rules.

Btw, I'm currently testing Alpine #XFCE on one old PC and #FunOS (Ubuntu with systemd but no Snap + #JWM) on another, and both around 300MB or less! Flatpaks enabled on both.

  • this does not affect new users who install f-droid and search for maps
  • this affected users who had f-droid installed when f-droid attached the tetherednet label to Organic Maps

Is this correct?

Easiest way to get people to use an app is not to be available on anything else. I onboard new users every month even businesses, but you need a good excuse that people will understand even if they dont love it. For me, it's a Linux phone with a cheap internet-only plan (meant for tablets and modem) so no Whatsapp or legacy unencrypted call minutes or outbound SMS. Once people realise DC or whatever app is the only way to reach you, they will use it if they really needed to communicate with you. I just hand out a business card with my DC QRcode invite and let them decide at their own convenience when/if they'll join.

@dcc @waltercool @purism I like Pinephone and appreciate that they made it affordable. However, that $200 price point meant that they could not pay devs and had to rely on the community to develop the OSes. Purism's higher prices gave us faster hardware and (some) US-made electronics while funding software development. Both approaches have pros and cons, but the main thing is we should not expect to get towards a fully functional decent-spec #Linuxphone one day if we are not ready to pay the price.
