Also, it looks like NXP has picked up their Cadence HDMI/DP bridge/PHY driver upstreaming effort again, which is a great news as it's one of the biggest things we carry in the downstream #librem5 tree! https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20260407-dcss-hdmi-upstreaming-v21-0-4681070ab82f@oss.nxp.com/T/

Millipixels has really overstayed its welcome, it was meant to be a temporary pile of hacks to facilitate driver development, but - perhaps inevitably, as makeshift does - it stayed there much longer than anticipated. I have spent a few hours polishing some of its roughest edges, finishing up past WIP work and hacking some desperately needed quality-of-life improvements in. Along with e.g. rotation sensing and better QR code detection, it can now also adjust frame rate to extend exposure time.

Last but not least, last kernel update is also lowering the FPS you can get in various modes - from 120/60/60/20/15 to 83.3/40/30/20/8. Why? It was the easiest way to reduce the MIPI CSI-2 clock freq, which turns out to effectively resolve the issue of camera locking up until a reboot under DRAM load due to ERR050384 erratum! The driver could be made to configure the clocks dynamically to unlock the full FPS range again, but that's left for later. Kernels are hard to show, so have more cats 😸

Here's a few cat-less examples too for some variety. The processing is still pretty basic, you can easily get better results out of Darktable etc. but it should nevertheless be a big improvement for what you get by a simple point-and-shoot.

@codo@fosstodon.org @janvlug@mastodon.social You can easily turn any website into a webapp, whether it's defined as a PWA or not. Pic related. Battery, in my experience: 4-5 hours of active use; 12-14 hours of idling without sleeping; 22-24 hours in system suspend where it wakes up from calls and SMS. Calls and SMS have been reliable for me here in Poland, but it's always subject to carrier compatibility now with VoLTE. In general there's no need to reboot at all unless updating or working on the kernel.

@etbe@mastodon.nzoss.nz @opensourceopenmind@social.vivaldi.net It could be better, but it usually manages to go through a day on a single charge, which is far from the point where I'd personally start considering such measures. Are you using system suspend? If not, why?

@Luigi311 The bottleneck for photo taking is actually DNG unpacking and JPEG compression. The shader is able to process more than 30 FPS (although at fairly low resolution), as it was written for real-time video recording: https://source.puri.sm/-/snippets/1223

@janvlug@mastodon.social @codo@fosstodon.org It's a modem firmware bug that we have no control over. There are workarounds with various tradeoffs, you could put a watchdog for it too. In practice, for me it's only a minor annoyance since flipping the switch is so fast, but I can see it being disruptive for certain use cases. Fortunately the modem is easily replaceable so we won't be stuck with this forever.

@jajo@mastodon.nu @janvlug@mastodon.social Here in Poland there is one kind of instant payments that can't be done without my bank's mobile app (Blik) - but their Android app works fine in Waydroid. Some banks around the world require platform attestation which is extremely user hostile though. If your bank is among those, you should complain to them and maybe look for alternatives.

@Blort Which one do you want to see? It's still using a very basic debayering method of 2x2 superpixels, so it has its dimensions halved and produces false colors at contrasting edges. I'm going to put a better demosaicing algorithm in there, but will have to see how much higher output resolution will influence performance before making it the default.

The way it does video recording is still... uhm, not great 🤪 so it's only usable for short clips, but it also benefits from the processing improvements, so these short clips should at least look prettier now. Audio should be a bit less desynced now too. If you want to record for as long as your storage lets you to with perfect audio sync, check out the video recorder at https://source.puri.sm/-/snippets/1223

@vincent Similar story with fuel gauge patches, they need some changes: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20220318001048.20922-1-sebastian.krzyszkowiak@puri.sm/ Generally, aside of really recent stuff, things that stay downstream usually have a reason to stay there. Some reasons are easier to get rid of than others though, so I can help point you in their direction.

You should be able to flash it, though if the red LED is shining continuously you may want to give it a few minutes to charge up a bit first, as from the previous messages it seemed like it might have been browning out on power.

@vincent Note that there's an upstream lm3560 driver, but it uses V4L2 API. As far as I'm aware the reason for writing a new one was that a LED device can be attached as a V4L2 subdev, while V4L2 device can't be exposed through the LED API, so some discussion with upstream maintainers may be needed first. Also, I don't consider s5k3l6xx driver to be anywhere near upstreamable quality just yet. It needs a solid cleanup and it still has a few open problems to solve in its clock configuration.

@vincent Incidentally, I think attempting to apply the feedback from the gauge series would be a good start! It's self-contained and I haven't touched it for a while so we wouldn't step on each other's feet, as I've been reworking some other stuff for mainlining recently too. The TPS65982 stuff is very entangled with other drivers, firmware config etc. so I'd leave that one for later.

@vincent These events aren't handled in the upstream driver, so I don't think this patch makes sense there without reworking and upstreaming other patches as well. Also, it's already there in the 6.18 tree: https://source.puri.sm/sebastian.krzyszkowiak/linux-next/-/commit/a2b7faa8e47673f18a002f07517e218cbe39b6a1 There's still feedback to apply from https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20220317154518.4082046-1-sebastian.krzyszkowiak@puri.sm/ that I have never got around to do so far.
