@dj@parcero.casa What type of programs do you miss? #OBS for example is available in repository but I still take from #flatpak . Same with #Linphone and #Nextcloud as they are more up-to-date than in repository. So I grab the AppImage file for them. To start them, I e.g. wrote this mini shell script: #!/bin/sh umount ${TMP}/.mount_linpho* 2>&1 rm -rfv ${TMP}/.mount_linpho* screen -dmS linphone $(which linphone) And I don't have to worry again about it that there might be some old mounted AppImage files left.

If you are like me and run your own private, Nextcloud server that isn't exposed to the internet and want to sync podcasts between your phone and computer using gPodder sync, you'll quickly discover that no podcast client will talk to a server with a self-signed certificate. Not because it's technically dangerous, but because the developers have chosen not to support it. A single checkbox would fix it. They've been asked. They won't do it. Why? Skip to the last paragraph. And yeah, with the amount of work I had to put it - I'm mad. :neofox_floof_explode: This pattern repeats across every app, every platform, and the Android operating system itself. The consistent push from podcast apps, Google (Android) and the Linux desktop ecosystem is toward public certificate authorities and away from privately managed infrastructure. The people who suffer is anyone who wants to run their own server without exposing it to the internet. Adding a certificate to Ubuntu's system trust store is straightforward and works immediately for natively installed applications. Flatpak (increasingly pushed as the Linux desktop standard) is a different problem entirely. Flatpak isolates apps from the host system, and the mechanism that's supposed to bridge host certificates into that sandbox is broken. For several versions, Android has had a deliberate policy to hamper users to install their own certificates. It's a pain. App developers can opt in to trusting user-installed certificates with a one-line configuration change. Most haven't. AntennaPod hasn't. None of this is technically insurmountable. But the cumulative friction across every layer... The apps, the OS, the desktop packaging format, the server appliance all pushes in the same direction: Self-hosting with your own certificates is made difficult everywhere, simultaneously, by parties who agree on the plausible-sounding security justification: "The only safe option is to have a publicly exposed server with a CA-signed certificate". Like that's safer than accessing a server with a manually verified certificate through a closed VPN mesh network. #selfhosted #selfhosting #self-hosted #self-hosting #antennapod #flatpak #gpodder #nextcloud #nextcloudpi

“#Flathub is now accepting AI slop” the Flathub reviewers have blocked over 1,000 slop apps in 2026 alone. that’s half of the verified app count. close to a quarter of the store could have been ensloppified by now! if you want to know what a slopnami looks like, just have a look at this link: https://github.com/flathub/flathub/pulls?q=is%3Apr+state%3Aclosed+label%3A%22AI+Slop%22 #linux #apps #flatpak #gnome #kde #ai

Parch Immutable is here. An immutable edition of Parch GNU/Linux built around bootc, atomic updates, instant rollbacks, and a small attack surface. The foundation for our upcoming commercial project, Apadana. Flatpak first, with Distrobox and Waydroid built in for everything else. KDE Plasma on top, with ongoing Persian localization work. Parch Mobile is coming next. Try the beta, break it, tell us what's missing. parchlinux.com/en/blog/introducing-parch-immutable #Linux #OpenSource #ImmutableLinux #bootc #KDEPlasma #Flatpak #ParchLinux

whilst i came up with an entirely different outcome [i would never ever choose the windoze of penguins, ugh, & i am not a gamer, so care nada about any of that associated crap], some of his thinking matches mine https://www.howtogeek.com/after-5-years-of-using-arch-linux-i-quit/ though i still have :archlinux: installed on my main pooter's sda, & whilst it is still very reliable for me, the friction from the routine maintenance [he listed some of the items / actions, but there's others too] has been a bit of a drag for me for some years now, plus the ongoing #AUR attacks necessitate a perpetually heightened defensive posture that's tiring, & to which i chose eventually to respond to by replacing most of my AUR pkgs with #flatpak or #distrobox ones, or in several cases nothing at all [ie, i chose to just abandon some apps altogether]. so for a couple of months now [after more than a year in various VMs], my delightful daily penguin is the immutable atomic alpha :kde: :linux:, on sdc. it is really pleasant to use, albeit ofc i needed to adjust several of my workflows to accommodate its RO base. my sdb remains largely empty atm, but once it reaches Beta i hope to install :opensuse: kalpa here unfortunately my old 2011 Dell xps-15 lappy is "stuck" with Arch, coz it only has bios not uefi boot, which eliminates both of those atomics, alas #DropbearPooterising #Linux #LinuxWomen #FOSS :kde: :linux: #KDELinux | :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: #ArchLinux #KDEPlasma :opensuse: #Kalpa | :debian: #SparkyLinux | :fedora: #Kinoite :firefox_nightly: #FirefoxNightly #FirefoxSecondSidebar #NativeTreeTabs

“Better safe than sorry” For release 0.5.0 of #Censor, a lot of work went into improving the security of PDF redaction. PDF documents are tricky, and irrevocably removing elements from them is even more. With this release, before saving a redacted document, garbage is now properly collected and documents are sanitized, which means that metadata, page thumbnails, etc. are removed. Also, vector graphics are now removed with a more strict option when they overlap with redaction rectangles. On top of that, I added redaction of PDF annotations. The user interface was refreshed: with undo and redo buttons in the toolbar and improved document saving experience. Drawing rectangles is now indicated by a crosshair cursor. Thanks to the translators, you may now talk also Czech with Censor! Get it from @flathub@floss.social: https://flathub.org/apps/page.codeberg.censor.Censor or contribute on @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de: https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor #censorship #redaction #PDF #Codeberg #Flatpak #Flathub #GNOME #python #MuPDF #PyMuPDF #linux

“Zoom in, zoom out, redact your points!” #Censor v0.7.0 ships improved zooming with pinch-to-zoom gesture on touchpads and touchscreens and various security bug fixes. Find it at @flathub@floss.social: https://flathub.org/apps/page.codeberg.censor.Censor and @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de: https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor You may now redact safely also #PDF documents with cropped, scaled, or rotated pages. The upstream #PyMuPDF library has some issues treating these documents. Thus, I implemented manual transformation and drawing of the redaction rectangles, and verified the proper redaction with a specially created sample document, submitted to the collection by #pypdf: https://github.com/py-pdf/sample-files/pull/36 Additionally, point- or line-like elements are now properly redacted. Sanitization during post-processing keeps now entries in form fields (note: this changes previous behavior). Thanks to the translators, Censor is now available in 13 languages including Croatian and Russian. #censorship #redaction #Codeberg #Flatpak #Flathub #GNOME #linux #python #MuPDF

“Annotation censoring everywhere” #Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool for the #GNOME desktop, got a minor update to v0.7.1. Find it at @flathub@floss.social: https://flathub.org/apps/page.codeberg.censor.Censor and @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de: https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor Censor’s #Flatpak package comes with the latest version of the upstream library #PyMuPDF (1.27.2.3). This solves an issue with annotations that could not be redacted in some files. Thanks to Julian Smith from #Artifex for fixing it upstream. In case you do not use the Flatpak package, you may need to wait for your distribution maintainers to update PyMuPDF’s version. Hindi has been added to the languages you may now speak with Censor. Thanks to the translators! #censorship #Codeberg #Flathub #GNOME #linux #python #MuPDF

#Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool for the #GNOME desktop, was released in version v0.7.3. Find it at @flathub@floss.social: https://flathub.org/apps/page.codeberg.censor.Censor and @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de: https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor or get it from your distribution package maintainers: https://repology.org/project/censor-document-redaction/versions (currently AUR, ALT Linux, and NixOS).

A bug was fixed that sometimes prevented files to be saved with the “Save” menu entry or associated keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S. Censor’s #Flatpak package comes with the latest version of the upstream library #PyMuPDF (1.28.0).

Three new languages have been added to Censor since the last announcement here: Basque, Swedish, and Ukrainian. Thanks to the translators! You may contribute to translations at https://translate.codeberg.org/engage/censor

More fork drama ensuing as was to be expected: https://github.com/flathub-infra/documentation/pull/641 Also, thanks for highlighting the existence of https://flatpark.org/ People hosting their own flatpak repos for their apps is increasing as it appears to me too. Luckily the format, tooling and docs for this are pretty useful and enable easy publication straight from Github actions or the likes. Compared to Flathub a rather pleasant experience. Now what'd be great would be a (forge based) discovery mechanism for self hosted flatpak repos. #fossdrama #flatpak #flatpark #flathub #foss #opensource #llm #selfhosting #fork #github #githubactions

#leyendo https://geopjr.dev/blog/democratizing-abandonware

One fresh FOSS drama coming right up: https://bbhtt.in/posts/flathub-leave/ Whatever has really happened there - the review and update process of Flathub clearly is cumbersome to ineffective or at least inefficient in my view. As are some policies. Very unfortunate for such a seemingly central piece of desktop Linux app distribution. Let's hope for a better evolution over time... #fossdrama #foss #opensource #flathub #flatpak
