New post: Google still can't make an accessibility menu accessible.
Put more than one service on Android's accessibility shortcut and holding the volume keys brings up a menu with no speech, at the exact moment no screen reader is running. Apple and Microsoft solved this years ago. I fixed it in ten minutes at one in the morning. Google has had years.

What Would A Serious AI Product Look Like? https://lobste.rs/s/q2rymh #a11y #design #vibecoding

a11y question: Let's suppose I have an empty html element somewhere on the page with 0 content, invisible*, having position:absolute (or fixed). It has no purpose in the HTML (only used for some CSS stuff).
Is it a good idea to add the "inert" attribute? Or should I do nothing?
- It may or may not have a size, but no style to make it visible.

Are there good examples of *accessible-first* #CSS frameworks, with common components/widgets?
I'm looking for something that is well regarded by its users, and has enough installed base that it's not going to disappear overnight.
This is intended for a possible replacement for a tailwind project, inside a #Phoenix #LiveView app.
https://darekkay.com/blog/accessible-ui-frameworks/ already has a lot of links, I'll dig through them over the next few days.
Bonus points if it doesn't come with an extraordinarily painful npm install & run process.

See how many visible WCAG violations you can find in this 25 second clip from https://corpowid.ai/blog/the-eu-ai-act-and-accessibility-how-they-intersect-in-2026 !
One hint — my window is 1,280px wide.
You don’t have to share. We don’t do free audits for #overlay companies here.
As always, adding overlays adds risk, adds barriers, adds harm.

Formular abgeschickt. Fehler. Irgendwo.
„Bitte korrigieren Sie die rot markierten Felder."
Rot markiert. Aha. Ich seh nicht, was rot ist. Mein Screenreader auch nicht, denn Farbe ist für ihn nur Farbe.
Also such ich. Feld für Feld. Welches ist falsch? Warum?
Genauso bei Grafiken: „Grün = gut, rot = schlecht." Schön. Für die meisten.
Farbe darf nie die einzige Information sein. Schreibt dazu, WAS falsch ist. In Worten.
Das hilft übrigens auch jedem Farbenblinden. Und das sind viele.

Manche Websites haben unten rechts so ein kleines Männchen. „Barrierefreiheit-Tool." Ein Klick, und alles soll zugänglich sein.
Was passiert wirklich? Mein Screenreader stolpert jetzt über noch mehr Kram. Das Tool überschreibt meine Einstellungen. Und die eigentlichen Fehler auf der Seite sind immer noch da.
„Wir haben doch extra was gekauft."
Ja. Ein Pflaster auf einen Beinbruch.
Barrierefreiheit kauft man nicht als Plugin. Man baut sie ein. Von Anfang an.

Overjoyed to announce that my AT-SPI bridge for Asahi Linux was just merged with muvm, bringing out of the box accessibility to applications like Steam and various other games that use 4K page sizes on apple hardware! This was my second Rust project and was written completely without an LLM, and I found it to be a great way to learn more about the inner workings of Linux. If you have a spare M1 or M2 Mac, I highly recommend giving it a go [when a new release is packaged up]! #linux #a11y #accessibility #rust #asahi
Ich öffne eine Website. Cookie-Banner.
Mein Screenreader landet dahinter.

Has anyone else had a Windows 11 update pushed on them and suddenly had Chrome mistype everything? Letters are switching even while I type slowly, whether in the address bar or in a field on a site. There don't seem to be any Chrome updates available either. This is pretty much making work impossible. Please share so I might find a fix quickly. #Windows #A11Y #Chrome
Replying to
@m@lgbtqia.space @MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social The suggestion in your last paragraph would make signing up hard to impossible for users with visual disabilities or motor disabilities, while (as someone else mentioned) being of dubious usefulness against subscription spam. Please keep #accessibility #a11y in mind when suggesting solutions.
Screen readers mostly don't read the rendered screen. They read the accessibility tree through platform APIs and feed a speech queue. Once that sinks in, a lot of "why does it announce that" bugs make sense.

Now that #Wolverine has officially been released, I can finally announce that I consulted on the #blind #accessibility for the game. I want to be transparent as much as possible for how much I was involved in the game and there was only so much I could work on within the time constraints, but I do truly believe this game is a step forward in terms of blind accessibility. There are several accessibility features that I have not seen mentioned in reviews, so I hope you will all join me on my Twitch today at 4:00 PM PST to talk about the game and design decisions that were made. Afterall, I myself have not even been given a review copy because of my involvement with the game, so this is truly the first time seeing the final product as well.

Today, I'm releasing a new website for blind gamers, built for 2026 and beyond.
So much of the information about blind-accessible PC and console games is scattered across the AudioGames.net forum, GitHub pages, Discord servers, and websites that haven't kept up with how quickly blind gaming has been evolving since the advent of AI. Unless you're embedded in Discord or the Audiogames.net Forum, you're probably not aware that over 70 games have been made accessible for the blind via modding this year alone.
What we've really needed is a website that tracks accessible mainstream games, with descriptions, direct links to their mods, and the information you need to get playing. "But that's a wiki," you exclaim. "But there are already lists like this," you plead. Well...
BlindGaming.net, aka The Blind Gaming Database, automatically tracks mod releases through GitHub and Nexus Mods. It also tracks game prices across Steam, GOG, Humble, and many key shops, with a genre filter and a page for ongoing sales. And for the nerds among us, each game has its own RSS feed and supports web push notifications. There are a lot of other small features, like cross-region price history, and an upcoming API for mod ratings and game access information. I also want to do a better job of raising up mod creators so people know how to support them!
All of this said, there's still much work to be done. If you'd like to help, consider writing a guide in Markdown or improving the existing Steam guide. I'd especially appreciate help from anyone familiar with console or Linux setup, so we can give people instructions they can actually follow. Finally, if you're interested in helping maintain the registry of games and have a track record in doing this kind of work, please shoot me a DM.
This is not intended as a replacement for places like the Accessible Gaming wiki, although I do my best to integrate with it and point people there when I can.
I'd love to hear what you think!
