@mhoye@cosocial.ca this is to me what makes this whole fucking thing an anti-technology, negative space of invention
like for a while i thought they were just, idk, "hiding" the interface? because thry thought it was clunky or something?
and it turns out it literally doesn't have one, there isn't a way to actually direct or "use" the fucking abomination, it's assault on thought all the way down

@thephd aw hell yea
in addition to the primary use, im super excited for an alternative usage it enables which ive wanted for many years:
#define let_in(TMP, VAL, EXP) _Generic((VAL) \
, typeof (VAL) TMP: (EXP))
// temporary variables within expressions!
int x = let_in(tmp, side_effects(), tmp > 10 ? tmp : tmp - 1);
finally you can write a correct max macro lol
(what i think of as "lightweight lambdas" - all i want is a name binding, don't need the complexity of anything bigger)

it seems just about anything can be classified as "faster" if you simply choose not to count time spent on parts of the problem as "working on it"
someone recently "improved" the time to complete a task from ~2hr to ~4days but so long as the first 3.99 days can somehow be justified as "not counting", they can call it faster
i think it's half and half: there is pressure to deny reality, there is also the perennial inability of enterprise programmers to accurately estimate any task, past or future: i think some folks genuinely aren't perceiving the time spent

it is not in fact the most MISRA-ful time of anything, but because my approach to dealing with stress is "run away, hide, do not open emails for four weeks at a time" i was unaware that the meeting was cancelled 😅😓🤦♀️
oh well, back in the other direction we go 🎶

@SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt on a personal level (and i don't think i can say this with the safety-critical hat anywhere near me lol) i do think that if you're not extending the syntax, you're not writing with the full language
syntactic abstractions are one of your tools for expression
if your high-level logic expresses things like allocation modes you should feel safe expressing your intent with blocks like no_gc { /* statements */ } or summat
the ideal of any API is composability
obviously, many C interfaces (of all kinds) fail dramatically at it

wait all this time ive been joking about the Heathrow Express, but potentially there actually is an Ace Train in their fleet?
(looking closely: the one with a rainbow on it has a different, slightly more familiar, black-burgundy-white arrangement, from the HX company colours; contrast with the coach it's connected to)

considered outright leaving the field if we end up steering towards these tools being not just commonplace
nobody solicited my opinion, but i feel like this is the only good option
if the choice is "get with the times or be left behind", i choose to jump off
(ive started working on making this part happen - better a massive pay cut than to work with these things)

@SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt this is about as far as i got when experimenting to see if such a thing as dict-passing would be plausible https://gist.github.com/AlexCeleste/a2f5dc3ddae9144ac99a59824446a2e7
i guess it's an exercise in seeing which sharp corners would need to be sanded off the core language

@SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt well, you get into interesting library design philosophy questions there
a well-designed library interface for any feature shouldn't leave the user needing to think about how its macros expand any more than they usually should think about what lies behind a function call boundary - which is a non-zero amount of the time but it is comparatively very low
(obviously anything built with #include INCREMENT failed hard at the first hurdle but ygwim)

@Fiona typeof is the way that it is expressly for inter-language compatibility
decltype chose a different keyword at the time it was introduced because C++ needs additional semantics that aren't in the GCC precedent and would retroactively break C if it was given that name
the name was therefore intentionally left available by WG21 for the C Committee to do something with
typeof can still be trivially implemented as a macro using features from if you need it for compatibility in C++

i don't remember a time when it was so explicit that actually building software didn't matter
a lot if management types are now actively arguing that the way to "achieve AI success" involves letting go of preconceptions about silly little things like shipping products, and at that point idk how to even argue with it because clearly none of the things i thought mattered were ever even goals

@buherator@infosec.place i have a non-programmer friend who vibe-coded an app they now want a professional to take over maintenance for, and ... well i ain't doin' that, though IDK whether it's better or worse for a client to be able to show you so-exactly what they want
at least they're aware the vibe-coded version doesn't scale and needs changes

unfortunately its association with a reprehensible designer means hup into the memory hole with ya

@agmlego@tacobelllabs.net if you're at all into medieval type stuff that whole area of the country is extremely castle-dense, again too many really to be specific
there's also some much older stuff - i have a specific visual memory of some standing stones - but working out what im actually thinking of will take a second 😅

@agmlego@tacobelllabs.net while i have family up there i don't live there or have personal experience of the region, but in general the nature of the island is not such that there are really many places you'll be at serious risk on a short visit; that's not how it manifests in most of the country
(usual caveats apply: the upcoming election may give you some hints and if you see people flying certain party colours maybe you want to avoid those people, but even they probably won't actually approach you)
near Telford: depends how you're going to be able to get around but the Shropshire Hills in general are super beautiful, always worth making time for simply sitting and staring into the distance ☺️
you're right up against Wales (which i am more familiar with) and if you have access to a car, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant or Vyrnwy might be worth spending the time to get to
(the drive will be half the point), or ... frankly too many other landscapes to mention

@thephd@pony.social if the question is, can you not only match on two types but also introduce identifiers for them, i think you're definitely requiring a tree-like structure of nested generics (outer match on argument 1, each branch of which leads to a match on argument 2, each nbranch of which leads to a match on argument 3 ...) because each introduced identifier would require its own generic, no?
i doubt i have much to contribute that you haven't thought of: a few years ago i apparently came up with https://stackoverflow.com/a/25715458/1366431 but i can't see how that's any better than being able to use the function pointer technique now
the main thing i was investigating recently was whether you can use generic for open-set/c++ stye overloading: you can, but it's ugly, you just need a dispatcher and to re-register your starting point
i don't think this has a ton to do with what it sounds like you want to achieve though sorry
