Excuse me but haven't we seen multiple lawyers professionally disciplined for relying on LLMs to prepare briefs and then submitting documents with misleading or nonexistent citations and other substantial errors in them?

So why in the seven hells is CanLII putting an "AI Summary" under each item in its search results?

I don't think it's possible to have a license-centric view of free/open software that doesn't center the state.

One of my cognitive quirks is that I can expend my drive to complete a task by talking through what I will do. It's a matter of degree, and the more I talk something out the less likely I am to actually do it.

You might imagine how a daily mandatory brief, detailing my plans for the day and requiring me to answer in detail if someone wants to know more, might affect me.

I think the funniest thing about at least this iteration of Alienware's bitlocker setup is that any time it wants the recovery key, it's entirely valid to power the machine down and back up again, at which point the boot process will proceed normally instead.

RE: @owen@mastodon.transneptune.net

I have since found confirmation that the 4GB blob Google helpfully shat into Chrome users' computers and the standards proposal linked below are two ends of the same project. Someone at Google is in a real hurry to turn their quarterly performance review into a durable internet standard.

The recommendation in that thread is to run a private CA for your LAN. Anyone who has experience doing that outside of a managed (i.e., corporate) network will tell you how hilariously useless that advice is.

There's no great predictive trick here, by the way. First, I have bad feelings about a lot of things that turn out to be completely fine, or at least entirely missable. Second, it's very hard to go wrong if you assume that taking venture money means that a company is going to start doing things that are great for venture funds and terrible for early adopters, or the public. Venture funding is unavoidably toxic to the value systems I care about.

Revenue per team is a terrible metric, but it's kinda wild to think that this 60-team projection means that most teams will have less than $4m in attributable revenue even if this plan works. It won't actually have that shape - a read through the financials can tell you pretty accurately which teams are going to be insulated from further RIFs and which aren't - but still. We're talking about small numbers by Valley standards.

@raganwald@social.bau-ha.us Sure, and that's valid. Speaking personally, what I have seen is an institutional embrace of big design up front - the bigger, the better - as a response to the structural deficiencies of statistical code generation. "Surely, with a complete-enough spec, an LLM will _finally_ generate code that does what I meant, and has no deficiencies I can't tolerate," realized breathlessly through things like BMAD.

The company brought in $260m in gross revenue in Q4 of FY26 (about two quarters ago). One might assume that their revenue has not cratered since then, even if it may have fallen. We'll see when they file their next statements.

If I were a stocking-maker whose livelihood had been destroyed I don't think that'd bring me much comfort personally, and craft stockings just aren't a thing now, so they did lose in that sense, but it wasn't ever pointless and it wasn't completely without success.

RE: @Floppy@mastodon.me.uk

Extremely pleased to see this kind of upwards consequence for being an asshole. This is the second such project I've seen this week; the other is for Firefox, to remove Moz Corp's AI and cross-promotion gunk.

I think I've finally hit on a big element of why Slack frustrates me so much as a workplace communication tool: the work of communication is transferred from the speaker to the audience by the structure of the tool, versus tools with more intentional communication styles (going back to email, but also including things like bug trackers) where the onus is on the author to structure what they have to say for legibility and to ensure that they reach the intended audiences.

@silverwizard Github _successfully_ executed a programmer-to-CTO sales pipeline pivot, which is no small thing. I don't appreciate the results for the same reasons you don't, but it _is_ something to note. Gitlab has been pursuing a very similar pivot for a while, but with significantly less success.

@aphyr@woof.group What particularly sucks is that I would _very much like_ web standards bodies (WhatWG et al) to point-blank refuse to come to consensus on an age-signalling apparatus, from a political and philosophical perspective, but I also recognize that that refusal would effectively put every operator (and particularly small ones) in a bind. >:(

The FFXIV community is once again having a giggle about the story of Gae Bolga, which means I am once again considering the degree to which identifiable sexual orientations and gender archetypes _cannot be understood_ without the society in which they exist.

@raganwald@social.bau-ha.us "No longer hold" supposes that those values were ever universal, when the manifesto itself poses them _as a choice_. What I am seeing, personally and professionally, is institutions reject those positions to varying degrees on the basis of a promise with no consequences behind it.

Since it's nearly impossible to search for this without being inundated with DOM-level focus event information, is there a standard DOM event for when a browser window, hosting a page that is visible, loses or gains focus?

@nik@toot.teckids.org ACME issuers are a huge usability improvement for TLS on the public internet but I’m not aware of any that will issue for private networks, unless those private networks correspond to a public internet domain or service. Which is kind of my point. Any sketchy internet site can authenticate strongly enough for your browser to let it send notifications or use a gamepad, but a server ten feet away needs a fully managed network to do the same thing.

@raganwald@social.bau-ha.us The experiences that are driving the values behind forcible LLM adoption have essentially nothing in common with the experiences of those that wrote the Agile manifesto, and I don't think the resulting value systems can be compared like-for-like, as a result.

@nik@toot.teckids.org in some contexts you just plain can’t. If the Switch’s browser supports the Gamepad API, you could host a browser based game on the internet, but there’d be no way at all to host it on your LAN. The Switch doesn’t support user supplied trust roots without violating your warranty.
