Unfortunately the experience of taking a bike on NS has not been good. We ended up getting left behind because of full trains 4 times this weekend. Seems they do not account for increased demand in the summer months, and don't run longer trains with more space. Very frustrating experience. Just another way in which trying to run the system at 100% capacity breaks things and leads to bad experience. Have @BicycleDutch@mastodon.social or @notjustbikes@social.notjustbikes.com had any experience with this? I'm not sure how technically possible it is to couple different types of trainsets together, but maybe now that they are retiring older trains, they could remove the interiors of some of the old trains and then couple them in the summer months to provide extra capacity for this.

@Daojoan I think most people are seduced by "passive income" not as in they don't want to contribute, but instead as a form of security. If income is passive, then you cannot be fired. It of course isn't true, but I suspect this is the underlying motivation for most. Or well, it would be for me, maybe I'm weird, but I do think I'm still pretty human.

@BicycleDutch@mastodon.social it’s amazing how cities evolve. Slowly, gradually and utterly. And yet suburban tracts (in Canada and the US at least) are argued to be set in amber by NIMBYs. It’s not a healthy situation.

@timbray@cosocial.ca I'm not quite sure how it relates to their employers, but it's also shit...they should be putting this on the air waves. That said, this is very much the BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOME here. This is the insane thing, and the reason I will not risk travelling to the US under any circumstances right now. Prior to this year, travelling to any developed nation was 100% safe for basically everyone. If you were turned back, that sucks and is a huge PITA...but you remain a free person. This is no longer the case in the US. People are not being turned away, they are being detained, indefinitely, without trial or recourse, in inhumane conditions, and without any idea when they will get out. At worst they are shipped to a forced labour camp in some foreign country. Don't risk travelling to the US, it isn't worth the risk. If you must try to enter through the pre-clearance area of an airport on foreign soil. It is much harder for the US to disappear you there. I'd say it's like travelling to North Korea, but it's actually worse than that. If you are detained by the North Korean government, your government will be able to put pressure on the Kim regime to release you. Not so with the US. Nobody is even challenging the US on these detainments.

It's interesting, I've come to realise that (at least for applications where weight/volume is not the dominating factor) one major factor in the economics of battery storage for energy (whether in grid situation, in vehicles of any type, etc.) is how frequently that battery is cycled. This is interesting because at some point I thought fewer cycles were better because batteries would last longer. But batteries already now last a very long time. And more frequent cycling means that they pay themselves off much faster. I.e., gridscale batteries which store power for a day (i.e., from solar power) is totally economically feasible today. But batteries that store power from the summer solar surplus to winter solar deficit are entirely economically infeasible.

I think there's lots of room for different technologies that can optimise for different economic situations. I.e., a yearly power cycle battery could be economically viable if it can only be cycled 20-50 times but was 100x cheaper per kWh.

@geerlingguy As a viewer in the EU...Yay. Also, I was excited for this review, but I was disappointed by the product. I have a Framework 13 with the original mainboard so I'm at the point where I am considering upgrades. The thing I'd want most is a cooler, more power efficient chip. I no longer use the thing as a work machine, it's just for surfing/yt/video chat, and the battery life and heat/fan noise are a bit annoying. I was hoping ARM would be a compelling option there, but I'll be waiting longer it seems. As is the case with a lot of modern tech, it's just good enough, and there's not a compelling reason to upgrade.

@atomicker would be nice but it would require a federal gov willing to tolerate the tantrums that Alberta is already throwing anyway. Or it would require Alberta’s to elect something other than the oil industry as a government. But maybe I’m to cynical. There is oil and gas extraction in other provinces as well.

@TechConnectify Well that was a delightful and rambling rant. FWIW...literally the ONLY thing better about the trains around Toronto than the trains here in the Netherlands is the closing door chime. The Dutch NS single beep is so boring. I was so glad (legitimately, and not sarcastically like most of my neighbours) when Waterloo region adopted it for their trains and I got to listen to it all day long at my previous house.

Tends to happen when a super power threatens you militarily. The crazy thing is, so many Americans are still surprised and confused that Canadians are angry. Can you imagine the response if someone treated Americans the same way.

@BicycleDutch@mastodon.social Lol...I used to ride all winter in Canada. I've missed this a bit. It was fun...but I'm very glad that it will (likely) only be one week, and that these continues won't be continuing till April. But yeah, it's amazing how "impossible" some people think riding in the winter is. It really isn't that difficult, everyone slows down and rides carefully. In Canada I had studded tires that were great on ice, here, I just went super slow. It's riskier when it's cold out in the mornings and there's no snow because you can have black ice which is hard to spot.

@ThistleArts@mastodon.art I mean, accounts that claim to be selling home made or small batch small business items (crafts, bags, widgets, whatever), but are actually just selling mass manufactured stuff of aliexpress. Some of these might actually be individuals who are basically brokering, but it's difficult to tell exactly who or what it is. Mostly I see this in ads on twitter...which is....on brand for twitter. Astroturf isn't exactly the right word, it's typically means a large moneyed interest (lobbyist) pretending to be local activism. We see the fossil fuel companies do this all the time. But I think the concept is the same, a large businesses/mass production acting like small scale local production.

@csgraves @juergen_hubert Do you think that "ownership of a story" is not a concept created by capitalism for the purpose of financializing human creativity? Because I have a few oral traditions to sell you if you think otherwise. If I create a story, the idea that you should not be able to retell it because I own it and I am granted a monopoly on it, is an inherently capitalist concept. By the way, if you want to have an actual conversation, I recommend you don't begin by calling my position "absolutely incorrect, immoral, and unethical" and "idiotic". Because if you're opening with that, then you really suggest that there is no point in me continuing a discussion with someone who has a firmly closed mind, and someone who isn't interested in a discussion. It's doubly so because you have ended with a straw man...because I certainly didn't say anything you claimed. Plagerism is not what LLMs do, nor have I proposed that (or anything even remotely like it).

@mhoye@cosocial.ca That's entirely unfair...the statement is largely true, this cut isn't about cost cutting...that's totally incidental side benefit. And it's about defining how a world-class, high-growth company and creates value... The only note I have is that there is a passive voice in the second part. I would reword: "The are about aligning with how investors (the VC or "Epstein" class) believe high-growth companies should create value. Sorry, but your sacrifice will generate significant short term growth on the stock exchange."
