i think it's interesting how french has an affirmative, "oui", for when you're agreeing with a statement, but also "si", for when you contradict it, but there is nothing such for negatives, only "non" for both, which can lead to misunderstandings (e.g. "i suppose you don't want X" with "non" as reply, which is ambiguous as it can either be an agreement or disagreement), which requires specifying afterwards which was meant to be clear, making the "non" basically useless here

if the next "c killer" language comes up doing generics with monomorphisation i'm going to blow up

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech @dalias@hachyderm.io @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me a screen reader is mostly useless to me, stuff being a bit bigger is usually enough (150% size generally works), scrollbar not being shy, and icons being readable (colour helps!) will generally be enough, i don't want to have to use a screen reader tangent, why do so many gui things have the scrollbar overlaid on the actual content rather than aside ? sometimes bc of that the scrollbar will hide some of the info i need

@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place to me, code is much like architecture, or photography: it is functional, it serves a purpose, but it is all filled with ideas, thoughts, and someone's craft. even when you make something purely from technical requirements, such that you do not have any leeway in how to make it, the art lives in the requirements themselves. are you building software such that each piece can individually be understood, improved, replaced ? the very fact of deciding to build software this way is an art form.

@pinskia@hachyderm.io as for swift, their generics allow direct use of parameter types, which requires monomorphisation unless your compiler can somehow rewrite it to not require it (but that's hard and not good for a systems lang anyway because it hides what's actually goes on)

@pinskia@hachyderm.io last i checked, zig used it with comptime, there was not enough capabilities in the type system to have type safe non monomorphic generic data structures, and the stdlib ones definitely rely on comptime just checked, yep, still basically monomorphisation

like i don't even mean full impl of specific algorithms, but like, simple helpers ? string views and utilities for string analysis / parsing (no scanf doesn't count) ? a file io api with actually good (or at least not terrible) error management ? some basic generic data structures (if the data structure is a bottleneck, the cost of it being generic will be outclassed by the implementation not being tuned to your case) ? a seekable bit/byte stream interface from a binary buffer ?
