RE: https://neuromatch.social/@jedbrown/117375142044365834 A true thing about llm-generated slop-art is that reliance on a machine that strips any creative work of context, history or intention leaves the people using it regurgitating this muddy-echo retroslurry with no way to understand or even see what they're looking at. Somebody tasked ChatGPT with making this poster, and ChatGPT gave them the box Microsoft FrontPage 2000 came in back when software shipped in boxes.

Follow the money: OpenAI has been giving cash stipends to college students to run astroturfed events on campuses. This "OpenAI Student Collective" is not a registered student organization and it's unclear how such an event could be compliant with the Campus Use of University Facilities policy, which normally prohibits commercial use of classrooms. (These are typical at any university. Note the dodgy language about whether one needs to form an official student group.) https://openai.com/student-collective/ I don't know how big OpenAI's cash stipends are, but Anthropic's are $3600.

TIL: only three movies have swept picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay at the Oscars: "It Happened One Night", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and "The Silence of the Lambs". Bugs Bunny was created as a parody of Clark Gable's character from It Happened One Night, who talked through a mouthful of carrots in one scene as a gag. But wild rabbits don't eat root vegetables. So today, people feed carrots to pet rabbits because of a 1940 cartoon parody of a 1934 Clark Gable movie.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@Diami03/117315085960820858 I basically wait until @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social, @zackwhittaker@mastodon.social or @briankrebs@infosec.exchange tell me I need to be paying attention. If @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange, @thegrugq@infosec.exchange or @wendynather@infosec.exchange weigh in on whatever it is, then I go looking for the key that unlocks the red button. So, I read the "Omarchy Doctine" document, and I'd like to save you a click. "I'm very old now and I don't like it at all. Nobody listens to me and I desperately want to feel like I did when I was 21. Computers were better when I didn't need to care about other people, and I don't like it and I blame women and minorities. Here's an ersatz 80s esthetic and permission to make sexist, racist jokes as long as your code compiles." That's it.

RE: https://weatherishappening.network/@wordshaper/117345126225966732 A friend of mine who practices law in Canada tells me that this was a problem until he started insisting that every citation include a hyperlink to the specific case law being cited, and just this practice - forcing people to actually find the case or statute they're citing and check the model's claims - has largely solved it. But this only works if case law and statutes are freely available in the public record, not locked behind paywalls. Which... I understand is not the case everywhere.

One of the funnier implications of the "It's an older code, sir, but it checks out" line from Star Wars is that credential revocation is a much more difficult problem than artificial gravity, integrated bioprostheses, interstellar faster-than-light travel or hard-AI. Remember, that line is spoken by _Admiral_ Piett; so - long ago, in a galaxy far far away - fleet-level auth and cert management was important enough that it was one of a flag officer's main duties. https://infosec.exchange/@david_chisnall/117319592191698274

Please stop enforcing mandatory time limits on credentials that are trivial to revoke! The point of mandatory expiration is that revocation happens eventually. In the case of a compromise and leak of that credential, an attacker has a guaranteed sunset when their stolen credentials will stop working. This is sometimes a useful property. For example, checking certificate revocation lists on every TLS session is slow. It's common for clients to skip this and rely on revocation sets that are pushed out during software updates. Short lifespans here serve to optimise the performance of revocation lists / sets: if your certificate lifetime is five days and you revoke it, after five days it can be deleted from revocation lists. Scale this to the number of certificates issued across the entire Internet and that's a big saving. But the big down side of requiring frequent generation of short-lived credentials is that the credentials needed to generate that credential (which, by definition, are more privileged) are frequently accessed. If I am generating a token to go into some release flow and I can do it once via a cumbersome process that requires multiple rounds of authentication and then put it in some secure credential store where it's accessed only from an ephemeral VM doing my release flow, then I don't care about the effort of generating the token. I do it once and, in the happy case, forget about it. If there's a trivial mechanism for revoking it, we're done: if there's evidence of compromise, revoke it and go through the slow process again. But if that token expires every 30-90 days, I need to automate generating it. Which means that some automated process that is likely to be as vulnerable as the token itself now has access to the credentials required to mint the token. And that's introduced additional complexity without introducing additional security. TL;DR: If you have an expiration policy for credentials, make sure that you have a threat model that it is intended to address and that you understand the operational complexity that you're introducing and any security weaknesses that this is will cause.

No disrespect to well intentioned people but everyone who is telling anyone to self host needs to sit down in front of a computer and walk through all the steps of doing that. Write them all down, every step from "I want to self host my stuff" to "A URL I can share that points to stuff I made that I can get paid for". And then do it again with a phone.

These days my first reactions to projects talking about AI in open source aren't even about the ethical disaster, the environmental disaster, the theft and gating of the commons or an of the other ludicrous externalities this blight of an industry has inflicted on all of us. My first, most visceral reaction to people who should know better and spent years claiming they did is, what happened to your self-respect. Did you ever bother trying to understand the things you said you believed in?

I'm currently trying to help my child through a capital-I Incident with the stage crew at her school, after a teacher who spent an hour "learning" how a complex lighting system works by chatting with Gemini for an hour might have wrecked that system beyond repair. The only interesting thing in these boxes looks more like an exercise in corporate psychoanalysis than anything you'd call engineering. It's the list of a baked-in special cases that precision-target credulous tech journalists or tell the model it should escape responsibility or scrutiny from anyone looking for auditing or accountability. What they included and why? That's sort of interesting, from a forensic-psychology perspective. That this is all they bring to the table, though? Weak.

I know us olds go on about Nokia ad nauseum but... my last Nokia had a USB adapter and a mini-HDMI port. It could drive a 720p monitor and pair with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse flawlessly. Hardware wise it was a reasonably usable desktop system I could plug into an HDMI port on any random screen and have a workstation that fit into a pocket. That was like 16 years ago. All phones now could do this but don't because if they did most people wouldn't need laptops.

An question I never found an answer to, when I last asked it in I think 2019: I’m already in a Linux, of whatever flavor, is there a way for me plug a new, bare hard drive in and say “turn this new drive into a bootable install that’s just about identical to the machine I'm currently using?" I don't necessarily mean bit-for-bit "identical" - clone meaning "working, identical boot process, same .debs installed" would be a solid start.

Aaaaalmost ready to try switching to Android for a daily driver, now that I've got a rooted device and I can inspect/uninstall a lot of junk it came with. My last two hurdles before I move the sim card over are "copies of everything that looked weird in the preinstall" and "carefully walk the permissions list again". Call me crazy, but the camera doesn't need permission to install apps, and the extra few dozen MB of preexisting data in Gboard are ... interesting. I wonder what's in there.

I wish I'd internalized maybe 20 years earlier that the only way free software could be liberatory, rather than merely, selfishly libertarian, is if the goals became not to secure our own freedoms, but to grant them to other people. Today almost nobody can change the software they use, and as a measurable fact almost nobody who can the change software the use does. But even so: having those choices matters; securing the fact of them, evangelizing and defending that fact, matters.
