Stop calling them the #canadianwildfires These are fires caused by American-led global inaction on #climate change Canada did not ask for them. Canada did not cause them. But Canada is paying for them. We are stretched thin picking up after our lazy neighbors. if only the US would take this moment as a wake up call to pick up their damn trash. But instead of realizing.they need to about face on.climate as the result is literally hitting them in the face, American governors are blaming Canada for a problem we didn't cause and are unable, single-handedly to resolve at its root.

On this #CanadaDay I'm struck by how few Americans know their government and the Russians are involved in a psyop in Alberta to incite a separatist movement. The goal: force a populist referendum to leave #Canada and join the #USA. Albertans are being swayed by glitzy YouTube influencer videos, many of which are #AI generated abroad,, to suggest their lives would be better in the US. You know, Florida mansions, control over immigration, pristine health care, high valued US dollar, and other grass is greener lies. Very #Brexit-esque, Cambridge Analytica playbook. As the US under this administration seeks to capture and manipulate oil internationally, Hormuz and Venezsudentenland are not enough. They are coming for the Canadian oil fields not with arms, but with algorithmically amplified #disinformation and millions of corrupt dollars to influence an election in their favor. For Russia, cracking Canada means destabilizing yet another Western democracy in the international illiberal project, plus Canada recently signed an agreement to provide drones to the #Ukraine. How can you help? I wish I could say call your Congressional Rep, and that might still work in some districts. However, this is digital guerilla warfare, and we still don't have good innoculation against it. Any information you can get out there on social media --about what it is really like to live in the US (maybe more about how actually likely it is to own a mansion or paying for your health care!), about how disinformation campaigns work, about what happened to democracies that voted to shoot themselves in the face based on peddled lies and are now dealing with the consequences (hello #UK), would help. Please tag Alberta separatism to ensure the message gets out. And tell your friends. People need to know this is going on. #elbowsup Receipts: https://thewalrus.ca/alberta-separatism-fuelled-by-russian-networks-and-us-influencers/ https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/article/co-ordinated-network-of-fake-youtube-channels-pushing-alberta-secession-and-us-annexation-narrative-report-finds/ https://www.cdmrn.ca/slopaganda-the-inauthentic-youtube-network-selling-secession-to-albertans https://thetyee.ca/News/2026/04/21/Dishonest-Online-Campaign-Support-Alberta-Separatism/ https://disifnowatch.org broke this story with international journalists' help: see: https://disinfowatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alberta-and-Foreign-Interference-Report-Final-052026-web.pdf

The Odyssey -- spoilers
Okay I saw The #Odyssey. It is an impressive feat of film-making. Some scenes are absolutely breathtaking and stay with you long afterward. The casting is inspired, the acting is brilliant, the cinematography is astonishing. But I get the sense that Christopher Nolan only has one kind of hero. The dark, brooding, deep intellectual yet also strong guy who carries the weight of civilization on his shoulders. Dark Knight. Father of the Bomb. It's like he was hooked by the first line of Emily Wilson's masterful new translation of The Odyssey -- "Tell me about a complicated man" -- and thought, "I like me a good complicated man." And that was that. He didn't do any other homework. So we get an Odysseus who is basically interchangeable with Batman or Oppenheimer. We get a meditation on PTSD and the crumbling of empire and morals that mirror the breaking of a man doing his duty. Oddy-heimer. We don't get the Odysseus who readers have been cheering on for 3,000 years: the trickster, the wiley, clever guy who isn't the brawniest but who always has a trick up his sleeve and keeps his wits about him in a pickle. πολύτροπον doesn't mean complicated as in brooding and emo. That first line is more often translated as the man of many devices, wiley, many-faced, hard to pin down: that kind of complicated. We don't get any jokes in the scenes with Polyphemus the Cyclops where Odysseus says his name is "nobody" (it's all clever puns and wordplay in Ancient Greek!) or Circe explaining that all men are basically pigs anyway so what's the big whoop. Intead we get monsters you can't reason with and body horror. Even killing the suitors isn't supposed to be one last act of grit but a cleverly contrived comeuppance facilitated by the gods. It is a no-fun Odyssey with intensity dialed up to 11 the whole time. Still worth seeing, but I will bet non-English speaking audiences who have their own translations of that famous first line will be truly stumped as to where this interpretation came from.

RE: @evacide@hachyderm.io

Fifteen years ago a Ph.D. student I worked with, Sarah Brayne (now prof at Stanford), was conducting her fieldwork at the LAPD into this new phenomenon, "predictive policing." It was early in the Big Data days. She came back with stories of this company, Palantír, backed by the CIA's Venture Capital wing (yes that's a thing apparently) that the LAPD was using to target pre-crime. They would purchase data sets from pizza delivery companies and other data brokers online and scan license plates in predominantly black and Latinx neighborhoods, use stop-and-frisk to stuff the database, and combine personal data across systems and domains to target who they thought was likely to offend next. Ironically, as the LAPD was fresh from a series of bias and corruption scandals, they wanted to bring in computers to help them de-bias the force.

"As foretold by prophecy" is accurate as that eye-opening moment foretold a lot of what was to come, despite so many of us screaming into what felt like the void for years.

I would love to know what we should be doing now to roll back this internet-surveillance-capitalism-data-economy-fuelled nightmare.

#Samsung is shutting down its text messenging app and forcing people onto #Google for SMS and MMS. At #techreclaimers we have been discussing alternatives to avoid Google. Several Reclaimers recommend Fossify Messages and Fossify Contacts as a good alternative, others have used Textra, and we'd all love to know about more options that keep your data private and sovereign.

If you're stuck, check these out and let us all know how you found the switch.
If you're a super user already, share the knowledge! What do you use?

Mood: Remember when the #Boeing capsule failed so the #NASA #astronauts stayed up a few extra months at the #ISS?

When they left in June '24, Biden hadn't debated Trump yet.

When they returned in Feb '25, DOGE was already in full force...

It's only a 10-day mission but let's hope #Artemis II crew recognizes the Earth they return to...

McSweeneys on #Ai#economics "Benjamin owns a farm. He employs 100 workers plowing his fields. His total payroll is $10 million/year. One day, he buys a mule, which provides the worker who uses it with a modest 10 percent productivity gain. Benjamin fires 99 of his workers and purchases 99 mules, expecting a 1,000 percent productivity gain. The driverless mules cause plow damage to his property in excess of $50 million. Benjamin loses another $5 million due to the loss of productivity from his one remaining employee, who no longer guides a plow but instead spends 100 percent of his time shoveling mule shit. Goldman Sachs builds an altar to Benjamin in their lobby and cuts out the heart of a junior analyst on it every Friday. They call it “Blood Sacrifice Friday.” The name isn’t catchy, but the event becomes a management favorite nonetheless." 🤣🤣🤣 https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/ai-economics-for-dummies

#News sites run software that detects every visitor's clicks, scrolls, and shares. That's how they know which stories get our attention, which sell to more eyeballs, and which do not. That's how they know how many more of a certain kind of story, about a certain someone, they should run.

Sometimes a certain event grabs all the headlines above the fold. Sometimes people aim to grab all the headlines above the fold. Sometimes individuals game the news so that it is all about them. Newsrooms, running on clicks, follow suit.

Withhold your clicks. Withhold your attention. Look away and engage elsewhere. You don't need a single story rabbit hole. Don't feed the beast, and do not give them what they are looking for.

#optout #digitalresistance

If you've never met an #astronaut they are incredible humans. Generous, kind, whip smart, 360 thinkers, both brilliant in a team and terrific in leadership, exceptionally skilled, and genuinely good, big-hearted people to boot. Thanks to my time working with #NASA I am convinced they actually do represent the best of us.

All four of the #Artemis astronauts flying on this lunar mission are extraordinary human beings. Godspeed to them, whenever they launch.

If you're working on the #cybercleanse this week and the data map is dragging you down, did you know you can look up all the SSO's that you use via Google? Apparently you can here:

https://myaccount.google.com/connections

A great opportunity to look these up and disentangle from Google, one login at a time.

See if you can log in to the service and direct your account to a new masked email address and password. Save these in your password manager and -- voila!

Does anyone have these for Facebook or for Apple?

"This is not a story about how AI works. It’s not about whether it is going to become sentient, make us rich, or redundant. It is a story about power. It is about how politicians became distracted by a shiny new thing, and failed to understand – or chose not to ask – what it might cost. It is not about whether AI will help itself to your job. It is about whether the people who make AI are helping themselves to your country."

Every story about AI should start this way.

For years I've been writing Op Eds and trying to get them in to mainstream media outlets. For years they have turned me down. Even if I'm writing about something topical, immediate and of the moment, it's always no thanks. I began to realize that because most of what I write is deeply critical of Big Tech, they just don't want to print what I have to say. If I tell people how easy it is to live without the tech giants or social media, if I tell them how much happier I am, then I gut the source of their advertising revenue. Yet looking back on this stuff- I was right. I have been right all along. I called in back in 2016, again by 2020, and all through the past five years watching our social order slide away. Also -- most of what I pointed out is only getting more and more true as time goes on. So I decided to go back and resurrect those pieces. Revise them for my blog. I will post them here. Maybe you'll like them. Maybe you'll find them interesting, or revelatory. For instance, here is one I liked about how these broligarchs are busy creating EGOSYSTEMS. And that if we just stop engaging, their power drips away. https://www.optoutproject.net/egosystems/

If you're following along on the #optout #cybercleanse with #techreclaimers , this weekend we are onto Day 2--Switch up your browser!

If you are on Chrome, Safari, or Edge - time to get off.

If you already use a privacy centric browser, try another one out for fun.

There are SO many great browsers out there and switching costs are exceptionally low.

For the next 21 weeks the Tech Reclaimers are going to walk thru the #cybercleanse one week (instead of day) at a time!

join in via @TheBulletin@social.techreclaimers.club or join our Signal or Discord groups by visiting https://www.reclaimcontrol.tech

Week 1 is GET READY: make sure you have the hardware you need. I recommend an external drive to save your stuff locally, but you may also have your eye on repurposing an old laptop or switching up your phone operating system. Make sure you have what you need to proceed.

@dansup@mastodon.social Great! Is there also a way to explain how people take care of their communities here, like volunteering to moderate and donating, etc? I usually tell people to look for good Codes of Conduct or governance principles, as it not only shows if they align but also that the community thinks of itself like a community garden where all contribute and participate.
