Happy Stanislav Petrov Day! Many people have received the Nobel Peace Prize for doing a lot less than him. On this day 43 years ago, Stanislav Petrov was a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet military, the commanding officer of a USSR nuclear early warning site. On Sept. 26th 1983, he watched in disbelief as the monitoring software showed that the US had launched 5 nuclear missiles. Why would America send 5 missiles when they had thousands? It didn’t add up. Petrov stayed calm. His job was to suggest retaliation, but he chose not to, and did nothing. He was proved 100% right – it had been a false alarm. A teenage Audrey Hepburn had spent her teenage years trapped in Nazi-occupied Netherlands during WWII, which gave her a depth not often found in one so young, convincing Wyler she could carry the role. During filming, Gregory Peck saw the daily rushes and was so blown away by Hepburn's on-screen presence that he called his agent to demand she receive equal billing with him above the title. Peck said he would look like a fool if she didn't because she was going to win an Oscar. Hepburn received top billing with Peck and went on to win the Best Actress Oscar. The movie was a huge hit and became an incredible advertising campaign for Vespa scooters whose sales went through the roof.
