It’s galling that tech billionaires tell us that letting them destroy the climate to develop AI will allow AI to tell us (somehow? maybe? probably?) how to fix climate change. And even more frustrating that news outlets report this blather without so much as a wrinkled eyebrow. MY DUDES WE ALREADY KNOW HOW TO FIX CLIMATE CHANGE. We stop spewing carbon into the air; install solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and other renewable energy generation; build mass amounts of efficient public transit; and stop funding industries that dig fossil fuels out of the ground. AND WE STOP DOING AI. We already know how to fix climate change, and we aren’t doing it. Even if some superintelligent chatbot COULD figure out how to fix the problem after we turn our world into an absolute oven, it’s bold to assume we would listen to good advice then, because we (including techbros, ESPECIALLY techbros) aren’t even listening to good advice TODAY. These people are tedious liars and scam artists. #ai #scam #climateChange

There’s an AI “meeting transcription and summary tool” for video meetings at my workplace that comes with a disclaimer that it should not be used if anyone does not consent. I never consent. Last time I said I didn’t want to use the tool in a meeting with a group of people I’m new to meeting, the meeting organizer asked “may I know why?” and I responded “Because I don’t consent,” and gave a blank stare. The organizer was visibly annoyed. This is a pattern with all these AI tools. Non-consent is perceived as an annoyance. The people refusing to use AI are perceived as the problem, not the AI tool. Consent is an inconvenience, not a right to be respected. #AI #consent #ethics

“The tech leaders who once hailed AI use as the key to unlocking every employee’s full potential are now changing their tune. This includes Shopify cofounder and CEO Tobias Lütke. He told employees last year that using AI is “a baseline expectation,” and they should first prove they “cannot get what they want done using AI” before asking for more resources. Hi blog writers: You don’t have to attach a unique image to every blog post, and you *certainly* don’t need to use #AI to generate an image for every blog post. You may think AI-generated images make your posts more attractive, but you are mistaken; they are doing the opposite: they make your posts more *repulsive* to a good number of potential readers. If I see an AI-generated image in the preview, I won’t click through to read your post, I won’t boost the post that mentions your post, and I certainly won’t read the rest of your blog.

Hey #Fediverse can I ask you a favor? Please don’t post URLs that have been shortened. Link-shortening services can not only potentially *track* your interactions and add telemetry to track your behaviors, they can also *break* and make your links unusable. You can use services like https://urlexpander.net or install an app (I like Link Unshortener (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/link-unshortener/id1506953658)) to find the ultimate destination of a shortened link, and then post that instead. Remember, all URLs in #Mastodon count as 23 characters, no matter how long the actual URL is, so there really is no benefit to shortening your URLs.

Fuck “innovation”. These days, “innovation” is one of the following: ⁃ Fucking over workers ⁃ Fucking over customers ⁃ Fucking over suppliers ⁃ Fucking over the environment ⁃ Fucking over public service and infrastructure ⁃ Fucking over everyone’s dignity and privacy Every new “innovation” is indistinguishable from #enshittification. Every new tech is deployed to put more money into the pockets of capital, and to do so by inflicting abuse and suffering on everyone else who is not a capitalist. When politicians wring their hands about “not wanting to slow down innovation”, know that they’re mostly worried about slowing down the rate at which their billionaire donors can profit from your suffering. Fuck em all. Fuck innovation. Innovation isn’t of any importance compared to a livable world and a dignified standard of living for people. BEFORE YOU REPLY: OF COURSE there are new technologies that make life better. But in our Big Tech world today, that’s almost never what the conversation is about.

@firebreathingduck@social.vivaldi.net The era of tech hypergrowth is over, and rich people who got addicted to amazing returns from the S&P 500 are desperately trying to find something—anything—that exhibits the same explosive growth that they saw during the zero-interest era post 2008. They tried crypto and NFT, and when that popped, they pivoted to AI. When this AI bubble pops, they’ll probably pivot to quantum computers and things like small-scale nuclear power generators next. The reality is of course there is no such thing as infinite exponential growth in a finite world. The sooner we regulate away hyper-wealth, the better.

I learned that the Great Depression’s first decisive symptom of systemic failure was the stock market crash of 1929, but the bank failures that would affect the normal investor didn’t happen until 1933, a full four years later. The recent subprime crisis started in early 2007 but didn’t cause Lehman Bros to collapse and TARP to be signed until late 2008. There have been some who theorize that the #AI bubble burst will be similarly slow-rolling. But I think it’ll be more rapid than that, because a lot more people have money in the stock market today, and because there are probably a couple trillion dollars in deals that will literally evaporate overnight if OpenAI or Anthropic has cashflow problems, which are directly tied to GDP growth numbers. I think the shockwave will travel through the system in months, not years. #ai #bubble #pop

Someone mentioned Victor Papanek on Fedi today, and I’m reminded of his story about the 5 MPH bumper regulation that was proposed in Washington DC in 1972: the regulation said that a 5 MPH collision should not damage lights and other safety equipment. Car manufacturers predictably complained about the rule, claiming that it would add $300–$500 to the cost of each car. Papanek claimed that he could make a compliant bumper in 10 minutes for under $5. Papanek’s solution was called “the hoagie”: two planks of wood with 60 empty beer cans between them. He attached the contraption to a car and drove it into an office building at 10 MPH and the car sustained no damage. Papanek’s solution was, of course, not commercially viable. But he did prove the point that such a device was plausible and need not cost a fortune. #design #industrialDesign #cars hxxps://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1977/06/09/when-things-fall-apart/7bd3887d-4003-4fc2-8450-07d82e6310f7/

Discussion and debate can only work if all parties agree to talk in GOOD FAITH.

To me, good faith generally means that each party commits to:

  1. The presumption of a shared, objective reality
  2. Stating one’s position (and motivation) honestly and clearly; and sincerely trying to appreciate the other’s position
  3. Not deliberately deploying lies, fallacies, or gish-gallop tactics to manipulate the other

In other words, good faith discussion is a cooperative activity, not an adversarial one.

The loudest people who “demand debate”do not meet the standard of Good Faith. It’s a waste of your time to debate these people; you’ll never change their mind, but you will give them delicious content as they “own” you live on camera.

Although right-wing bad-faith debaters is almost a tradition at this point, I’ve also seen too many clips of progressives “owning” conservatives using dishonest, bad-faith tactics. This is not merely a right-wing problem.

I’m reminded of an Air Force experiment around World War II to redesign the cockpit to accommodate contemporary pilots. They measured 4000+ pilots to determine the target dimensions of the new design. After designing the new theoretical cockpit to the average height, average arm length, average leg length, etc., they tried to fit their existing group of pilots in it and found that they could fit…zero people. Because no one is exactly average. The science of ergonomics instead correctly assumes that equipment need to accommodate a *wide range* of human dimensions to be most useful. This principle applies to our built environment and tools as well: their designs accommodate some range of human existence, but not others. Our goal should be to make our world accommodate the widest variety of human conditions, not to draw a line that says “no participation beyond this point” and exclude entire populations of people. Or worse, label and blame those excluded for their condition. https://www.thestar.com/news/insight/when-u-s-air-force-discovered-the-flaw-of-averages/article_e3231734-e5da-5bf5-9496-a34e52d60bd9.html

Today I learned Scott Wiener, candidate for US House rep for #SanFrancisco #sfba, had his campaign put up a “parody” chatbot website of his opponent, Connie Chan, called ConnieChan dot AI, in which the people can “talk to Connie”. The chatbot “responds” as a caricature of Wiener’s opponent. His campaign also put up billboards advertising the website. Condemnation of the chatbot rightfully came swiftly from women leaders, including Nancy Pelosi. Wiener is now taking the site and the billboards down. The fact that Scott Wiener approved this stunt at all is a sign not only of poor taste but a fundamental disrespect for others. Using #AI to put words into your political opponent’s mouth—a woman and minority opponent at that—is tone-deaf and disgusting. San Francisco, you do NOT want this man—a genocide denier at that—representing you. VOTE FOR CONNIE CHAN. #scottWiener #misogynyhttps://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/scott-wiener-says-conniechan-ai-chatbot-campaign-billboards-to-be-removed/

The word “disabled” is a victimizing term that puts a label on an individual for straying too far from the norm in some inherent property. The term “disabled” glorifies “the norm”, whatever “the norm” happens to be in the present society. Have fewer than two arms? Disabled. Can’t stand up? Disabled. Can’t see or hear normally? Disabled. Don’t process information in the “normal” way? Disabled. Naturally sad or fatigued a lot? Disabled. We slap a label on people and tell them to go to lengths or buy equipment to merely *participate* in everyday life. It’s backwards. Instead, we need to put a label on the *system* that fails to accommodate the person. A society or built environment can be “hostile”, “under-equipped”, or even “eugenicist” if it doesn’t allow all people to operate in it. #disabled #disability #terminology #words

By the time the “agent” decides to start making changes, the AGENTS.md file is barely there. It does consume tokens, though, so mission accomplished?

A local small-business pizza restaurant that I frequent is now heavily using #AI for all their marketing. Their logo is replaced with AI slop. Their promotions use AI slop images. They haven’t replaced their menu images yet (it was the same ones they used from before), but I wonder if any new items will have an actual photo. I will not be going there again. I wasn’t going to tell the staff that I won’t be returning because of the AI imagery because I really need to talk to the store owner about it, so I did the next best thing and wrote a Yelp review to that effect. I think it’s important to tell business owners that they are losing customers because of their use of AI slop. A lot of them are using it without realizing that it will repulse some people, and I think we need to close the feedback loop.
