Instance admin. Not a professional sysadmin like some here; fuck me, I'm not even a *good* sysadmin. But I wanted in on Mastodon, and "Spin up your own server" felt easier than figuring out which one to join
Goal is empathy, posts are typically about daily life and home / car / computer repairs and events I guess? I dunno, I've been posting often enough you can just scroll and see
@gwen@tech.lgbt @DaveMWilburn@infosec.exchange @kimzetter@infosec.exchange She actually calls out youth being failed
So a lot of people that only have online friends are [in The Com] because they have other problems that are not addressed, and the social fabric has broken down to the point that they’re falling through the cracks, and the only remaining social resources for them are just online
She also calls out delayed feedback loops as not being helpful, and wants a tighter loop of action -> consequence, which... isn't unreasonable. Lots of people are bad at seeing which actions lead to what, youth especially
If you don't give them penalties immediately that…are painful for them, then they're going to keep doing the thing. Because a potentially bad thing two years from now means literally nothing to them.
I'm not going to argue about how long the sentencing should be, but if probation is provably not working, then continuing to apply the same sentence and expecting a different result is not the smart way to solve this problem long-term
@aesthr On the topic of future tech in museums:
Thanks to this “cloud rot,” an Android retrospective won’t be possible in a few years
Pulled from a decade-old Ars write-up that, fittingly, probably could not be written today

Kinda wish Mastodon showed "You last sent a follow request on $date" - as it stands I'm stuck with adding a note on a profile,
because before I started doing that I'm... 90%(?) sure I cycled through "Hey, neat!" -> Req. to Follow -> Silently denied -> Weeks pass, and someone boosts one of their posts again -> Return to 10 at least a few times
FBI will not arrest juveniles, because there is no federal juvenile system. But FBI have, I believe, searched houses and also visited [juveniles] and said, like, hey, please stop doing crime….
Tracks, and makes sense re: the FBI not having a juvenile dept,
but the image of the FBI coming by for a chat and dropping the phrase "Please stop doing crime" verbatim is absolutely marvelous
Inspired by the line
Yes, technically, you are patching vulnerabilities. But in the actual, messy, human world, people get hacked because of deliberate user actions executing malicious payloads regardless of the underlying OS vulnerabilities.
