try imagining things sometimes. just imagine them yourself; don't let a computer or somebody else imagine them for you. today's exercise: bob ross reads software documentation. take your time. be sure you're still absorbing information. bob ross will be patient with you

@screwlisp@gamerplus.org hmm... i bet most questions i'd have will be covered! i'm interested to hear views on AI and ethics, but also curious to hear thoughts about email being functionally (though not totally, and not by design) controlled by a handful of large companies, where even the pro-privacy side tends to embrace centralization (and to simply give up on metadata privacy). i wonder about ideas on what we can do differently to stop decentralized systems from shifting toward centralization, going forward. i also wonder if there's any hope in reversing course with existing systems like email, and how we'd do that, or if we'd be better off letting it go (whatever that would mean) and trying again from the ground up as new types of systems that are developed. so, yeah, vague and broad and probably already would be covered! but i'll be curious regardless.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social i've been thinking about "harness" recently, and i'm trying to think of what to replace it with that also captures the ridiculousness of allowing a text extruder's output to be executed as computer commands, often without any confirmation. my only ideas so far are cringe so i'll withhold them

i do have pinentry, i have various pinentry variants installed and pinentry is in the path. but idk what to do to make this not happen. i'm trying this as root so that the system can decrypt the encrypted parts of its configuration: gpg --generate-key and that's when i run into the dreaded pinentry issue

is there an alternative client frontend to the official #fdroid app that has an anti-LLM policy? i really don't want something that is capable of installing and updating apps on my phone, of all things, to be slop-ridden; i don't care how minor the commits are or how well they've supposedly been reviewed, and i'm not going to act like it's pointless to try just because some android dependencies might have slop. that's just not how i see it. and i don't need the FSF to tell me "slop's okay actually" for me to change my mind. i can have my own opinions. (i'm working on leaving the android ecosystem entirely, but that will take time.) #NoAI

when you have a brain that doesn't work very well, this kind of crap eats up so much time. and the pinentry info pages basically act like there's no good option for a frontend, and that the emacs option is possibly the worst one. maybe if there's no good frontend, it's not a good design?

something i came across looking into distributions to replace debian is the stance that qubes takes on secure boot: "UEFI Secure Boot is not supported out of the box as UEFI support in Xen is very basic. Arguably secure boot reliance on UEFI integrity is not the best design. [...] See the [Heads project] for a better-designed non-UEFI-based secure boot scheme with very good support for Qubes." https://doc.qubes-os.org/en/latest/introduction/faq.html#is-secure-boot-supported alas, i don't think my framework amd laptop (their first-gen amd) supports open firmware... #debian #secureboot #qubes

i don't really need a gpg passphrase (in this specific instance) since i need the system to be able to read its own secrets in an unattended manner. finally found this solution to avoid pinentry entirely: gpg --pinentry-mode=loopback --passphrase "" --gen-key

pinentry hates me and the feeling is mutual, but maybe less than i thought
so the plain pinentry packages actually works fine - at least, as long as i am physically at the computer: (service home-gpg-agent-service-type (home-gpg-agent-configuration (pinentry-program (file-append pinentry "/bin/pinentry")) (ssh-support? #f))) it even works from a vty. now i wonder how i can coerce it into letting me enter a password from a tmux session started at the computer, instead of showing its prompt on the computer itself.

@gblues@bolha.us @chadmccullough@mastodon.bsd.cafe @eff@mastodon.social EFF has been glazing AI for several months or more. it's pretty noticeable in their live streams, with such paraphrased hits as "i used it to figure out more about the mp3 codec as a side note for a presentation for some reason, without having to read about it! it's incredible!" and "love it or hate it, it's undeniably useful and everyone is using it! we just need to regulate it." they are definitely inevitability-heads on this and *love* to vaguely reference its importance and power

@user47@m.ai6yr.org the ability to figure things out via web search has been seriously degraded over the past, idk, decade or more. so it's understandable.

you used to be able to search for a question and find people asking the question alongside an answer (eventually). i think that's still sometimes the case, but much less often*. it's no wonder the slop machines have taken off. and they didn't cause the problem but they made it a lot worse

  • honestly, this might be because i started using duckduckgo (i.e. bing with a duck pasted on top), but nowadays they're all worse at their core functions imo due to the sloppification of the internet which - again - predates llms. and i may also be searching for things that are more obscure, as my desire to have Nice Things pushes me further to the fringes

guixing out

seems that the search results that mentioned guix repl were onto something:

Compared to just launching the guile command, guix repl guarantees that all the Guix modules and all its dependencies are available in the search path.

  • so says the guix manual.

,use (gnu home) has no errors in guix repl. someone had suggested making a script that launches guix repl and having that be the geiser binary. i tried it, maybe too hurriedly, and there were errors... but in realizing this, guess i'll try it again.
