And like, I'm AMAB. A relatively small AMAB but I went through normal male puberty and still ended up with wrists small enough that most "Men's" watches look ridiculously large on me. This just happens and a lot of thin and/or smaller men come in looking for watches. They'd totally benefit from being open to trying women's watches but they refuse to even look at them just because of the label. Similarly there are some really cool men's watch designs that are relatively small and could fit many women but they also refuse to try on these watches because they feel they're not for them.. it's sad.

Are there still any Android phones worth getting if I want a phone that actually lasts or do I have to bite the bullet and finally switch to an iPhone? Looking at Android phone ratings rn it looks like if I want a good phone I have to choose between Pixel with their never-ending jank and Samsung with loads of spyware. (I know fairphone exists but I don't earn enough to be able to justify that. I still need a good performance to cost ratio)

Camping is so fun! Last weekend I went on my first camping trip in years and the first one ever where I didn't go by car. I had to pack everything into my trekking backpack or onto my bike so I had to figure out how to gear up with the limited cargo space. It was a super fun challenge and I'm very happy with how @lilylunatic@estrogen.network and I organized this trip. I think we did really well for our first time ^~^

Mechanical watches require maintenance. They have lubricants in them that deteriorate over time and have to be replenished. They're also far more likely to break from shocks or magnetic fields. Mechanical watch repair and maintenance has to be done by experienced experts and their services are neither cheap or easy to find locally depending on where you live. In comparison, changing a battery in a quartz watch costs spare change and you'll likely find a service that can do it in any town or city. Many mechanical watch owners are ok with this but many aren't aware in the first place and face a very unpleasant surprise when their "eternal" watch suddenly halts after 5 years of no maintenance.. Please, if you intend to get a mechanical watch do your own research on how much maintenance is gonna cost, how often you'll have to have it done and where you can have it done. Be aware that these are things you're signing up for with a purchase like this.

If you simply want a watch that will keep going for as long as possible without any need for interference with its insides, there are certain types of quartz watches that fulfill that purpose much better than automatic mechanical watches. Solar quartz watches use sunlight to power the watch and charge a battery that acts as a power reserve for when it's dark. The solar cells and batteries on these watches can last over a decade without any need for maintenance. Some of them even come with extra features that make them even more "set and forget", made possible thanks to the extra power from the solar cells. Many Casio watches can automatically sync with an atomic clock via radio or Bluetooth. Seiko has a line of watches that accomplish the same thing using GPS practically anywhere in the world. Citizen has solar watches with ultra high frequency crystals that keep nearly perfect time for years without a need to sync to anything. These technologies are not exclusive to the respective brands mentioned above, they just set the gold standard. Casio also has a line of digital watches with regular batteries guaranteed to last over 10 years. Some of them even come with the aforementioned radio syncing capabilities. Digital watches in general can run without a battery change for many many years because they use so little power. In conclusion, if you want longevity first and foremost solar watches are the best solution on the market at the moment. They require maintenance less often than mechanical watches, they're more resilient to shocks, magnetic fields etc. and they're far more accurate, especially the models that sync to atomic clocks. That said, all watches require maintenance eventually. Solar cells die, gaskets fail, high capacity batteries eventually run out. Around 10-15 years of servicing-free operation is about as good as you're gonna get.

Please remember! When your watch needs to be serviced, whether it be mechanical, quartz, solar or any of the other funky secret types, take it to an AUTHORIZED service shop and not some random mall kiosk that copies keys and changes watch batteries! Watches are delicate and often require specialized, even proprietary tools to safely open and repair. Third party batteries can be sub-par and solar watches absolutely require first party solar cells and accumulators. Finally, and most importantly, whenever a watch is opened at all the gaskets need to be replaced to ensure water resistance. Many kiosks that offer watch battery changes don't replace the gaskets or use lower quality third party ones. As a result you have no guarantee that your watch retains its water resistance and every time it gets wet you're taking a gamble. Water getting into a watch movement has the potential to ruin it very quickly if it's not immediately dealt with. If you care about your watch and want to keep it in good condition for many years, please don't cheap out on servicing. Go to an authorized service. Also, when getting a new watch it might genuinely be worth it to get the extended warranty, depending on the store of course. Where I work, the extended warranty gets you 6 years worth of movement repairs and battery changes for a smaller fee than a single battery change. An analogue quartz watch would require about 3 battery changes in that span of time. (None of you will buy an extended warranty from me so I have no financial incentive to be lying about this. These warranties can genuinely be pro-consumer because watches require regular servicing and you usually keep them for many years.)

So I've seen quite a few videos of Americans experiencing culture shock after finding out that you're expected to take off your shoes immediately after entering a house in some Asian countries.

And like

Do you mean to tell me that in the US you DON'T take off your shoes when you come into your house?? You just bring all that dirt in? Like it's so weird that this is constantly presented as an unusual quirk of Japanese or Korean culture but I'm pretty sure it's quite universal because most people don't want to constantly sweep/vacuum their floors and being barefoot or wearing slippers is more comfy indoors??

One thing that differentiates quartz and mechanical watches is the second hand. On quartz watches, the second hand almost always moves exactly once per second. On mechanical watches it moves at the same frequency as the balance wheel, so usually 3-5 times per second (up to 10 on some of the most high end watches) which gives the illusion of a "sweeping" second hand. Sweeping hands on quartz watches are possible but usually impractical because of the increased power draw. I think this is where I talk about my favorite type of watch movement ever - the Seiko Spring Drive  Basically you have a mainspring wound by wrist movements (just like an automatic mechanical watch) which steadily unwinds. Part of this spring's kinetic energy gets converted into electricity which powers a quartz crystal. The oscillations of the crystal are then processed by an integrated circuit that uses them to precisely control an electromagnetic brake that slows down the unwinding of the mainspring. All the hands of the watch are connected to gears on the gear train which is in turn moved by the mainspring. The electromagnetic brake slows down the whole mechanism to the exact pace at which the gear of the second hand makes a full rotation in precisely 1 minute. The result is a second hand that sweeps in a perfectly continuous motion, more fluid than on even the very best of mechanical movements. All this while having the super high accuracy of a quartz watch and still running on mechanical power without a need for a battery. The Spring Drive is an insanely elegant piece of engineering and I would love to own a watch with this type of movement someday. (Sadly it still needs to be serviced like a mechanical watch because it still has a lot of moving components) Here's a 2 min video visualizing and explaining this tech: https://youtu.be/HoEorK6elZM

Luxury watch collectors have lost the plot so much. Apparently Citizen watches have a mid rep in the watch enthusiast community despite the fact that they make some absolutely amazing, beautiful watches with lots of really impressive tech in them. Why? Because they *also* make some cheaper, great value watches for regular consumers. Are these cheaper watches bad? Not at all, in fact they're fantastic for the price and are often also quite high tech. But apparently the whole brand is less desirable for collectors simply because they ALSO make cheaper watches alongside their luxury offerings.

Ok so it's very weird that my glasses can turn themselves into shades now. This will take some getting used to. Also they seem to be ever so slightly dimmed even indoors? I mean I was warned of this and it's not really noticeable from my perspective but it looks slightly odd when I see myself in the mirror

The Clever Dripper is hands down my favorite coffee brewer and it's absolute peak in terms of both coffee quality and convenience. It's probably the easiest brewer to use and clean and it makes great coffee (provided you use good, fresh beans and a decent burr grinder). It's so good it's becoming the standard pour over method in many cafes because it's very consistent.

Definitely my recommendation if you want to upgrade your coffee brewing habits without diving too deep down the rabbit hole.

The first 2026 teas are starting to become available!! This is your reminder to find a reputable tea importer in your country/region so you can get your hands on some super fresh teas this season! (Good importers should list the harvest year of their teas especially when it comes to the freshest ones)

I've posted about it before but basically we've entered the so called "first flush" which is the time when tea plants begin their first growth spurt of the year. Leaves from the first flush are regarded as being more flavorful and complex than leaves from later growth periods and as such they're very highly valued.

Tea is generally the best when it's fresh but some tea types benefit from freshness more than others. If you're a tea enjoyer I recommend you try some of the following tea types when they're still at their freshest:

- Green teas - green tea is very prone to going stale and its taste tends to be the richest right after harvest. All high quality green teas will taste great when they're fresh but some specific kinds to keep an eye for would be Japanese Shincha, Chinese Long Jing and Hunagshan Maofeng. Those are some of my favorites anyway but there are lots of delicious greens from the first flush!

- White teas - fresh white tea just tastes like spring, what can I say? Even just a basic Pai Mu Tan is gonna be amazing this time of year.

- Light oolongs - lightly oxidized, flowery oolongs from China and Taiwan are incredible in the spring. I've had one that smelled exactly like lilac but only for the first month or two after harvest! Pretty much look for anything described as "flowery" and you probably won't be disappointed.

- "Black" teas from Darjeeling and Nepal Guranse - black tea usually stays fresh longer than other types but first flush teas from these 2 Himalayan regions are actually closer to light oolongs. They have a very unique flowery and hay-like flavor profile and are simply incredible when they're fresh!

So I was looking for barefoot canvas sneakers to have some lightweight shoes for the summer. Somehow the single cheapest pair I could find was handmade in the EU, fully vegan and seemingly better made than Converse Chucks. And also made by a company that mainly produces children's shoes but has a small handful of models for adults. I'm in awe that this was THE cheapest option by a lot if we don't count dubious Chinese brands.

@miranda_blue What's your point of reference? As in what kind of coffee are you used to? It'll always produce something more similar to drip than espresso or even french press. I typically do 16g/250ml at about 95°C with a ~3.5 min steep time and I grind medium-fine. I usually get coffee that's more bodied than with a V60 but clearer than an aeropress. Also, what beans are you using?
