Today I Learned: That the included program ‘ntfsfix’ can be used to clear the record of bad sectors on a Windows partition. I had cloned a Windows system from a bad hard drive that had some bad sectors. The file system log that noted those bad sectors came over in the clone, even though the drive I cloned it to is fine and has no bad sectors. Found the problem when I was trying to use gparted to shrink the partition. sudo ntfsfix -bd /dev/sda4 After running that, gparted let me shrink the partition #Linux #gparted #ntfsfix

I installed LXQt desktop on my laptop, as I have been using it on a desktop for a while. Artix by default using the Openbox window manager with LXQt instead of the xfwm4 that Devuan bundles with LXQt. So some of the shortcut key configuration is slightly different. Eventually, I'll get around to pairing BSPWM with LXQt, as I think that'd be fun. For right now, I'm running cortile which maximizes the windows automatically with the default I have. For right now, I can say that LXQt is much lighter on resources than Cinnamon on the same machine. Cinnamon on Artix seemed to be much more of a resource hog than Cinnamon on Debian and Devuan based Linux systems. But with LXQt, it just sips instead of gulps. #Linux #Artix #LXQt

Mostly Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) ... but I am doing more with Devuan and derivatives like Vendefoul Wolf with LXQt. As of right now, I am still most confident in LMDE for best "newbie Linux distro". I should do a comparison video between the two so I can easily show people who are interested in Linux. Another thing I should do! #Debian #LMDE

Agreed. We can still use cash, trade and crypto-currencies for transactions. We can also use encryption for communications. I think the reason you can't use just the super key to open the 'start menu' is that it is reserved to be used in other keyboard shortcuts along with other keys.

When searching here's what I found:

Note: Assigning the Super key alone to the menu may disable its use as a modifier for other window manager shortcuts (like window snapping).

And I do have it set up to be used with window snapping (super + numpad key).

Here's a video that shows a bit of what I've done to customize:

Sadly, I agree. We can have a lot of individual freedom, but that is quickly being eroded. If people give up most of their privacy, it will all be gone.

The problem is that all browsers have some objectionable baggage they tow along with them. Some people may find different things more or less objectionable. Brave is one of the browsers I use. I also still use Firefox (though I now find the Mozilla organization to be quite objectionable). #web #webBrowsers #Firefox #Mozilla #Brave

I promised it, so here it is. This is a recording of littleFedi running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W on NetBSD. Everything is on the SD card, the database is SQLite, and caching is enabled. Personally, I won't comment on responsiveness or anything else; I'll just say that when I use it (both via the web interface and with apps like MastoBlaster or IceCubes), I find it hard to believe what kind of hardware it's running on. Users' sessions (by default, a maximum of 8 users but configurable) are kept "warm" with every interaction or federated activity for 15 minutes since the last login; after that, the server enters "low power mode" and simply processes incoming data without activating the (users' timelines, etc.) cache. We don't need to get ripped off for more powerful hardware, which comes with outrageous costs these days. We just need to optimize and build efficient software. Abundance led to waste. #littleFedi #NetBSD #RunBSD #OwnYourData #Optimize #ScreenCapture

At this point I'm willing to compromise and have my car be a small percentage computer, as long as it is older than 2010. Ideal would be a bit more percentage custom computer that I completely control to provide some extra function and monitor the percentage of car computer that I don't fully control. #privacy #cars

A few more tweaks to the LXQt desktop. Put the menu bar at the top of the screen. Removed the start menu (mainmenu) and Quick Launch. Put the Desktop Switcher on the right side of the bar. I am launching applications with lxqt-runner bound to a shortcut key, 'Super + Space' (so similar to default rofi or drun functionality, but the default built in tool for LXQt). The default keyboard shortcuts for positioning windows are pretty good but assume having the numpad, which I do since I am using this on a desktop with full size keyboard. I modified the keyboard shortcut for 'maximize window' to be 'Super + Begin(keypad)' s that the center of keypad does what I intuitively expect it to for window positioning. Right now I feel very comfy in LXQt. There's just enough for widgets and customization to feel that it is easy to use. Just enough ability to customize, without being overwhelmed with options. It is light and quick. #LXQt #Linux

Am I reading this correctly?

Sec. 4. Individual Freedom to Fix. The Administrator of the EPA shall consider deprioritizing civil tampering enforcement actions against anyone who, in good faith, attempts to fix his or her own vehicle to its original configuration.

Seems that almost everything we want to do will remain illegal, but that the enforcement actions will be "de-prioritized".

So still the selective enforcement problem. They make it so that everyone does things against the law, because there are laws against about everything you can think of, and then they come after the people they want to with selective enforcement.

If you believe certain words, you believe their hidden arguments. When you believe something is right or wrong, true or false, you believe the assumptions in the words which express the arguments. Yes, there have been complaints about how the assets of Gitea were managed, which led to the fork that became Forgejo. For me, I am not convinced that the offenses are serious enough to recommend that people avoid Gitea. Going different direction with a fork is fine, which is why I posted links to both Gitea and Forgejo.

Federated protocols of the future should consider designing themselves so that even if they use DNS, it is not the foundation of their own identity system so they are not hopelessly bound to it. Federated networks which have message relaying capability such as Bitcoin or BGP can also span across different networks such as cjdns, Yggdrasil, I2P and of course the outside internet. https://thegoodwork.substack.com/p/the-next-internet-war #federated #DNS #Internet

I'm having a weird issue with this on a ThinkCentre Tiny. It boots but the last message on the screen is: SGX disabled by BIOS And then it hangs and doesn't go any further. From the research I have done, the SGX is a warning and not the cause of the freeze. Something else is, but that doesn't get a message on the screen. Anybody else run into this issue with Debian or Devuan based Linux distros ? #Debian #Devuan #Linux

I tried both the Devuan Edition of Peppermint OS and Venderfoul Linux. Void Linux worked fine on the same machine. So I am thinking it is something Devuan-base specific... but really odd that I haven't run into this issue before due to how much I used Devuan and Debian. I'm going to try Peppermint OS and Venderfoul on completely different hardware to see if I have similar problems or if it is something with that machine. Lots of other people have reported a similar issue in forums, but I haven't identified a solution for my ThinkCentre Tiny M710Q

I have installed the LXQT version of Vendefoul Wolf Linux on a ThinkCentre Tiny M700. My first couple attempts to install were unsuccessful... but I now think that is due to me trying to use the "disk encryption" checkbox in the installer. After just about a half hour of getting used to it and making a few adjustments to the keyboard shortcuts and settings, I am quite happy with LXQT. It is quick and light and has most of core features that Cinnamon desktop has. https://vendefoul-wolf-linux.sourceforge.io/index_en.html #linux #lxqt #devuan #VendefoulWolf

I am really liking LXQt - lex-cute - desktop. The defaults are just below desirable, but with just a bit of customizing LXQt is really good. So it is not as polished visually and features "out of the box" as Cinnamon desktop is, but it is much lighter on resources and is customizable in the ways that I'd like. Wish I'd tried it sooner... but maybe it really hadn't found its current form until recently. #Linux #LXQt

There's over 21 Billion square meters of land area in the state of Israel. So enough for everyone on earth to have a couple meters to themselves, just on one level. Add underground and multiple stories and there's a lot more room (three dimensions are a pretty cool aspect of reality).
