So "AI" coding so far ...
Users are unhappy because there's more bugs.
Developers are unhappy because it sucked the last bit of joy out of their profession.
Executives are unhappy because the productivity gains didn't materialize.
Who except the vendors of the coding agents and by proxy Nvidia is this for again?

I want every "AI" doomer to actually walk me through their little sci-fi horror scenario.
Tell me how and why exactly an LLM kills all humans or whatever you claim this week.
Don't just say "uhh, it'll be so powerful". Tell what you think it'll do, how it'll be prompted to do it, and why it couldn't be stopped, step by step.

This might be the funniest MS Office thing I have encountered yet:
Excel has global undo/redo, so if you work on multiple files and hit undo a few times. it may change things in a different file. Good luck reconstructing that, if you don't immediately notice.
An absurd design decision imo

If we ever make a real AI that's actually conscious instead of slop generators, you can be sure the vast majority of articles will be about how it's definitely not conscious and certainly not a person in order to justify its continued exploitation.

The idea of "AI alignment" should not be interpreted as "does the little guy in the computer want the same thing as I do?" but as "does this software that I'm using contain bugs that introduce undesired side effects?"
An LLM that produces false responses or an agent doing unexpected things is not categorically different from a shell script that has a forgotten rm -rf ~/* somewhere that gets triggered by some edge case condition.
Scale doesn't change the fundamental nature of a problem.

One of the outcomes that programming produces is understanding.
By building a system you gain knowledge about it as it is created. There's probably no better way of gaining that information. I would even argue it's the more important outcome than the actual executable code.
Using "AI" coding removes this outcome entirely, so why should I ever want that?

If I want to write to my MEP about the "EU KIDS ACT", is there a template or a list with the relevant talking points? I don't think I have it all present in my head, not enough to make a good argument towards a politician who may not know anything nor really care.

You get one of those boards off eBay, get a 3D printed case, add a power supply and fans, then do some BIOS flashing and install Linux.

If I didn't already have a PC, I would probably try this.

Funny how "democratizing computing" is used as a pro-genAI argument, while it's not even true, this isn't democratic at all, but nobody ever talks about "democratizing blacksmithing" even though a very large portion of people use kitchen knives.
The idea that everyone should be able to do everything without relying on others is counter to the entire course of human history.
And of course genAI doesn't actually remove the dependency on other people. It just abstracts it away by means of capital

Not even 48h after the attack and all I read in the press is calls for more policing and tougher laws.
Nothing about how mainstream society enables violence against queer people.

Sehr schön das Marketing und die Panikmache der Tech-Konzerne wiedergegeben. Ganz großer Journalismus

Do any of you know someone in Berlin who's a trained counselor or social worker and can moderate difficult talks around trans discrimination in workplaces? Someone who actually knows what they're talking about

You know, if you have set up all your workflows as Apple intends it AND thrown a ton of money at it, then yes, it MIGHT be smooth and convenient (though less so in recent years).
But if someone tells me Windows in 2026 is more user friendly than Linux, I call bullshit. Modern Windows is a disaster.

Every time a post here does numbers a little bit the weirdest and most annoying people come out of the woodwork.
I'm starting to block people just for having annoying takes now but I doubt it'll change anything because there's always new ones.

I'm not even expecting to make a living off art and research. I'd be totally fine with a part time job that covers rent and necessities but leaves time and energy for art and research.
That used to be a thing in my lifetime.

Serious question for Windows knowers:
Does Windows 11 have anything meaningful that Windows 7 couldn't do?
I'm not talking about having a weather widget here, I mean actual OS features.

System updates on Linux: take 10 seconds, can be done while the machine is running, reboot soon-ish whenever you feel like it to finalize them.
System updates on Windows: your computer is now useless for 20 minutes and you have to stick around because there's no option like "install and shut down"

Same, but with a much lower cost threshold and for different reasons in addition to the ones already mentioned:
I want some friction in my purchases. I know I lack the self-control to be responsible with spending on my phone that's always readily available. Having to boot upy PC introduces enough pause to make me think about what I actually want and need.

I am the „big purchases require big screens“ kind of person and you will never find me buying something over 200 EUR on my phone. Sorry, but I am going to do an important transaction, I need to see everything create the feeling of control over the act of purchasing something.

Triggered by unsettling news yesterday my brain decided to have flashbacks to pretty much every traumatic event of my life for a few hours.
I haven't felt as exhausted and drained as today in a very long time.

And none of them is the "creepy shot of a woman while she's not noticing" type of street photography, imagine that.

A totally non-techie coworker asked me today if I had heard of "that AI that broke out" and I had to do a little damage control by explaining that it's not like the scifi horror scenario they were imagining after seeing it on the news.
(it was the OpenAI/Huggingface security fuckup)
I compared it to an industrial chemical spill. Bad, sure, but a spilled toxic chemical won't continue and take over the planet, and I think that metaphor landed pretty well.

@Huubje@ieji.de a sustained bpm over 150 leads to quick exhaustion of the dancing masses, excessive chill-out phases off the dance floor, and increased consumption of frivolous sugary treats offered by capital holders. it's therefore ultimately counter-revolutionary

My Wifi theoretically also does up to 1Gbit/s but that's really just theoretical.
A real 1Gbit/s cable connection is so much faster both in ping and bandwidth, it's not even funny.

Great job guys, people are eventually switching to Linux despite of you, not because.
