RE: https://godforsaken.website/@Shrigglepuss/116956861336088363 Mullvad actively gives refunds if you state this as the reason, even if it goes against their 14-day policy. It worked for me. We don't know if you remember when KDE stopped posting on Twitter, some feathers were ruffled because a contributor stated in no uncertain terms why we abandoned that platform. That position still stands.

Hello! This is the launch of KDE For People. I and others are calling for KDE to adopt a No-AI policy for KDE Plasma and Plasma Components. There has long been discussions in various parts of KDE, but recently there was a proposal to allow the use of Generative AI in KDE Plasma. LLM venting
In basically all private companies LLMs have been forced with no mercy by management, who LLM companies usually offer discounted prices for, and who've usually never even programmed or haven't done it in decades, and so they do this "use it or get fired" bullshit with them But libre/open source software is volunteer run and non-profit, no one there can be forced into using LLMs with that level of violence, and so what they're doing is basically just bribing leader figures of important projects that we need and depend on and try to create a sort of FOMO or sunken cost fallacy thing. they offer specific leadership figures special AI plans who then go to the projects they're working on and (since they're influential and powerful in them) implement pro-LLM policies in them so they can use their toys. it's literally bribing but not even with money, it's like if drug lords could bribe senators with their own crack. It's fucking pathetic.

@Xarizzar@mastodon.social I don't know if you pulled something I said in my account, but I honestly think that only talking about LLM coding in terms of how useful or efficient it is or if it's good for codebases or not is explicitly a right wing fascist tactic to phrase the extremely numerous ethical and environmental concerns as things to not even take in mind. If you think there's a way to push against this other than cultural pressure, be sure to enlighten me. But a few years ago most programmers didn't even want to have codes of conducts in repos, they had to be bullied into it. Burning the planet me and my children have to live in for some mild convenience is not and will never be something I'll feel bad about calling people out for.

@chronohart@tech.lgbt Linux has fallen to slop ages ago. There's really not a lot you can do. Most BSDs (and the only usable one for desktop is FreeBSD as far as I know anyways) I'm pretty sure have an open LLM policy. As someone who struggled with this too, don't worry too much about things you can't control. Scrap the things you can scrap, and the things you can't scrap, be vocal about them and try to not give them any money. That's about all we can do.

Regardless, the fact that the self-titled "libertarian anarchist" that is Mullvad's co-owner actively funds a pro-mass-surveilance party is indeed cause of concern. @spacekatia@girlcock.club I'd disagree I think :blobfoxlaughsweat:, Rust is a language where you constantly have to think who owns what and how to manage the memory, even if you're doing it thinking in terms of language constructs (like Rc and RefCell and Box and such). The borrow checker is also a lot more strict and memory arenas, while possible, kinda have to be shoehorned in and are a little inconvenient to use because the language is clearly not made with them in mind The thought process behind memory management in a "mid-level language" is comparatively simple I think, you either alloc with an arena if you can group the allocation with a bunch of others or you alloc with the gc if it's more complicated than that

I've been thinking fully low-level languages really need to exist (C, Zig, Rust, etc) for mission-critical stuff, but I also think most other software doesn't need that level of control to still be of really high quality. Go has a GC and a runtime and I've seen some really excellent programs written in it for example... :blobfoxthinkanime:

I've been thinking about a sort of "mid-level language" approach, one where everything is on the stack by default and you have access to raw pointers (which can't be null and may be like indices under the hood or something). If you want heap memory, you have to manually allocate it with either:

  • A garbage collector, which you are in charge of when it runs and when it has to free everything
  • A memory arena, which you are in charge of when you free it
  • Maybe some other allocation method? Object pools/buckets, etc?

It would ideally be memory safe though I'm not sure how to achieve that and also allow memory arenas without some super complicated borrow checker.

C interop would also be as easy as humanly possible so you can easily "drop a level" when you need to for performance, too.

The advantage of this idea is you'd have the ease of use and memory safety of higher level languages but you can still fine tune and opt into "easy" optimizations that are usually low-level language only.

What do you think?

I've been thinking fully low-level languages really need to exist (C, Zig, Rust, etc) for mission-critical stuff, but I also think most other software doesn't *need* that level of control to still be of really high quality. @lisyarus@mastodon.gamedev.place Most programming languages have expression statements: statements that are just a blank expression. Like,

3 + 3;

is valid syntax in a lot of languages. These are what make multi-line no-semicolon syntax ambiguous, because

let x = 10

  • 1

could be

let x = 10 - 1;

or

let x = 10;

  • 1;

but if "- 1;" is not a valid statement (because expression statements are forbidden) then the only valid interpretation is 10 - 1.

That being said, he still generates AI images, he is still kind of a pretentious asshole, and the Zig programming language is just a huge pain in the ass to use in general, because of many explicit decisions made by him. Does it beat partnering with OpenAI and making an LLM policy that bans all discussion of ethical concerns, or being an antivax pro-trumper, or being explicitly anti-FOSS and directing a super toxic community, etc etc? Yeah. I'd put up with it if Zig was actually fun to use, but god it's really really not...

@ferret The fact that you, literally in a server called workersofthe.world, CANNOT CONCEIVE of issues with AI-generated code other than codebase quality is absolutely baffling. Maybe before wrapping yourself in such aesthetics you should actually give a shit about the workers? The data centers that generate images and music are the same ones that generate code. They destroy communities and burn the planet for profit. They have totally reversed all the minuscule gains we had done against climate change. The tech companies that provide the LLMs are willing collaborators of mass surveilance and genocide. Anthropic, the company behind the most popular programming LLM, literally murders children. Microsoft, OpenAI and Palantir are willing contributors to the gaza genocide. By using their shit regardless you are validating them. LLMs are trained mostly by African underpaid workers sitting through extremely horrendous working conditions to catalog the massive amounts of data needed. LLMs are a fascist political project to deskill and devalue labour as extremely evident by all the tech companies having mass layoffs and the rhetoric of every single company pushing for them. And more importantly... Coding LLMs are also made with stolen human-made code??? This is like an extremely well known fact??? @ferret Code is absolutely art. Art is also used to solve problems. Solutions can be artistic. The way you solve problems is part of your own self-expression. And even if it wasn't art, it is still labour. Non-art is still wrong to steal. Saying that it's wrong to steal and siphon from pictures but not from code is actually kind of worse than saying neither is wrong; the former implies you view programming as labour of "lower value", and as such, you are fine with it being stolen and violated in this way. This is quite a gross thing to do as a self proclaimed socialist, again, before the aesthetics, actually check that you care about the important shit. Saying "Everything you're saying is true, but it is technically possible to code with LLMs in a way that is 30% morally bankrupt instead of 99%, myself and another twelve people on Earth do it" is not the own you think it is. The vast majority of programmers simply don't give a shit, they use Claude or Codex or whatever's built in to their VSCode slop fork of choice. I can guarantee this includes kernel maintainers. It's like if I was complaining about a group of arsonists burning homes down and you said "Well I mean they could burn down Elon Musk's house and then they'd be okay" like that matters at all to the discussion. It is such an unproductive thing to add to the conversation I'm only not considering it trolling because you replied in good faith the first time.
