My 'conspiracy theory' is that we stopped selling petrol in gallons when the pounds per gallon number got too high for people to accept. Although of course we still use mpg. Heights and weights and temperatures in non metric are gradually disappearing, hospitals generally have stopped giving baby weights in pounds, which helps. Yards are used for rough distance communication interchangeably with metres
