I once read a romantasy book by accident:
#Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain because they relate to #feminism
The theatre was told that “any mention of civil rights, feminism or social reform [topics that are central to Woolf’s work] are usually classified as ‘social topics’ by our automatic system” and are filtered out.
To resolve the situation, Meta recommended removing “key words” so that the text doesn’t appear to encourage activism.

In light of the UK government's recent advice to households to stock up on food and water in anticipation of potential interruption of supplies this winter, I thought I'd do a little thread on #DisasterPrep for people who aren't gun-obsessed misanthropes as someone who has managed water and sanitation for a few ecological fieldwork and bushcraft camps.

Science: hey look we found some new knowledge and want to share it with humanity!
Capitalism: you should be charging for that.
Science: no you see the more it gets shared about the more everyone can participate and the more further knowledge we can generate! It's not a zero sum thing! And that wouldn't work if we charged people to access it!
Academic journals: Don't worry Capitalism, we've got this
Capitalism: cheers fam

Water purification
If you run out of stored water you're going to need to start purifying it. This is where the recommendations to start buying a lot of stuff starts mounting up, so where it would be helpful to get together as an apartment block, your street Whatsapp Group, a local Transition Town group, a community kitchen, whatever. I have this stuff kicking around anyway because I like hiking and wild camping, so if you're lucky someone in your group will already have it, but if that's not something anyone's into this is I'm afraid where it gets expensive.

This is me in front of #JodrellBank's #LovellTelescope back in 2018. As far as I'm concerned the best thing we have ever managed to do as a species is to cooperate to do remarkably clever things none of us could manage alone, in the service of understanding more about the universe we find ourselves in. The fact we seem to be turning away from that as a culture and deciding the highest, most noble goal we could be persuing as a species is money making is heartbreaking.

Like this video shows how dramatically the amount of meat in the Dutch diet suddenly increased over the generations, from his grandmother born in 1937 when people were eating 19.7 kg of meat per year, when his mother was born in 1960 it was around 22kg per year and when he was born in 1991 it was 40.5 kg a year. We really don't need as much chicken and egg as we're currently producing.

The UK has opened a consultation on the sale of fireworks to the public, and is seeking responses particularly from groups who sell, use or are affected by fireworks, but it's open to everyone. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/fireworks-and-pyrotechnics-in-the-uk/fireworks-and-pyrotechnics-in-the-uk
Personally with the number of wildfires burning at the moment, at least one of which was actually caught on camera being started by fireworks https://imginn.com/reel/DasV2FPNxgu/ I think it's time to ban their sale to the general public. And that's even before taking their effect on pets, wildlife, people with PTSD, and burns and house fires into consideration

Please folks, I know awful things are happening in Palestine but sharing un cw'd images of dead bloodied children is not the way to raise awareness.
I'm going the make this personal because I don't think some people understand in the abstract. I have PTSD, after witnessing an accident in which a small child was badly injured. Seeing that unexpectedly has given me flashbacks and made me feel sick, exhused and dissociating. This will affect my ability to do what I have to do for the rest of the day.

After starting my morning by blocking someone for sharing an unCW'd image of a prisoner being tortured in Isreal, I'd like to reiterate that no matter how important your cause this is neither the most effective or the most compassionate way of mobilising people to support it. It's not just about the people seeing the image either, if that poor man survived he probably wouldn't want that image out there and any of his family probably wouldn't want to stumble across that on the internet. But people don't need to see graphic images of torture to understand torture is bad, and in fact if following your source of information risks exposing them to those images people are more likely to block the source than learn from it.

#BuzzBallz are unrecyclable, and claims to the contrary are #greenwashing say recycling experts
"The company behind the bright, pre-mixed cocktails that have taken Gen Z by storm said they were recyclable on its website, but experts say this is not true.
BuzzBallz cannot be recycled as the PET plastic ball cannot be separated from the aluminium lid, global environmental action body WRAP said."
I do think the need some sort of legislation to stop people launching consumer products in new types of packaging that can't be recycled by existing infrastructure, and will in fact mess up existing recycling systems with cross contamination.

Absolute carnage in Tesco this morning, most of the chiller cabinets seem to have failed in the heat so they're selling off everything they can half price. I just popped in to grab something for lunch but ended up grabbing a lot of discounted fresh produce and deli bits. I won this morning but in the long term we're all going to be the losers.

If you want to get rid of pavement weeds and you don't mind killing the invertebrates in the soil, as this salt will have done, use boiling water which at least will cool and not stay there permanently. Or pull them up. Or learn to identify them - there are some great resources on learning to identify and appreciate pavement weeds here https://morethanweeds.co.uk/ Invertebrates are struggling enough as the plants they depend on wither in this heatwave, can we not just leave them whatever scraps remain just this once?
Honestly as these relentless, climate collapse induced heatwaves kill people, kill wildlife and set fire to the landscapes I love I'm feeling increasing despair at how indifferent most people seem to be to their environmental impact. But I feel particularly depressed to see things like this that probably stemmed from a deeply misinformed attempt to help.

"Burnham’s team have asked officials to draw up plans to abolish the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) as part of a wider Whitehall shake-up.
