I wonder if any radio operators utilize isolated grounds in their radio rooms.
These outlets are typically orange and have a green triangle printed on the cover.

This could include oil change, new gasoline, running the engine or other maintenance activities.

If you want the best performance traditionally you would put the “base” antenna outside and use LMR400 or 600 to feed it.
That comes with a penalty in signal loss and cost.
Today you put up a mesh solar powered repeater and it uses a short jumper to connect both pieces of equipment.
The higher the better.
Here is an overkill base antenna.

Tuesday through Thursday should be in the lower 90s across much of the state but most days start out around 70.
Thursday is when the broader heat dome (our third big one of 2026) begins to buckle. The northwest flow centers over Minnesota, and a front drags through our best widespread chance of rains this week.
Have a great afternoon.

For $2400 dollars Russell Bliss sprayed every road in Times Beach Missouri. For $33 million dollars the federal government bought the entire town and burned it to the ground.
Between those two numbers is the story of how a chain of decisions, each one a little cheaper than the last, erased a community of 2000 people from the map and turned the place where they’d raise their families into a grass covered mound that hikers walk over today without knowing what’s beneath their feet.

Though no one tracks the migration of LGBTQ+ people from one place to another, a poll conducted by NORC suggests that roughly 400,000 trans adults fled red states in the six months after the 2024 election.
Another 1.2 million trans people were estimated to be considering such moves.
Meanwhile, private donations have shrunk and grant opportunities have disappeared as the president warns against using federal funding to “promote gender ideology.”

August 8th is International Cat Day and so the amateur radio community will be hosting cat pictures via SSTV on this day.
My opinion is all frequencies that are authorized should be used for SSTV.
We can’t really call it a competition because clearly my cat would win so instead the goal is to celebrate all cats, big and small.

6 Months of AI Radio Went About as Badly as You'd Expect
The experiment was simple. A company gave four AI models $20 each and a fistful of instructions, then left them to their own devices.
So, how did it go? Poorly, as you might expect. Andon Labs says that the longer the experiment ran, the more ridiculous things became.

Most arrived with jobs and rental agreements. But after Trump took office and further emboldened conservative lawmakers to strip trans people of rights, Seattle leaders say they began to hear from people with no plan, only a desperate need to move immediately.
“Most people don’t come to us saying, ‘I want to move to Seattle.’ They say, ‘I need to get the hell out now,’” said Aspen Coyle, a program manager for Traction. “It’s been chaos.

It's just one of several Seattle nonprofits whose leaders say they don’t have the resources to help the number of trans people who’ve left their homes for the safety of the Pacific Northwest.
Though trans people make up just 1 percent of the population in Washington state, the nonprofits that help them say their budgets are drained and their staffs are stretched so thin that last month the Seattle LGBTQ Commission asked Mayor Katie Wilson (D) to declare a civil state of emergency.

Seattle has long been known as one of the country’s most trans friendly cities. It banned discrimination on the basis of gender 40 years ago. Its hospitals were among the first to offer gender transition care to young people.
Those protections have always drawn trans people from elsewhere, but in the years before Trump won reelection, nonprofit leaders say, the numbers were small enough, and the newcomers so prepared, that organizations could easily help people settle in.

Unable to get out, she was lifted to an altitude of 10,054 metres (32,986 ft), according to her global positioning system (GPS) data. The GPS variometer also tracked vertical speeds of up to 21 m/s (77 kilometres per hour (48 mph)).

They were just 21 and 20 with no money or job prospects, so Harmony reached out to a Seattle nonprofit for help getting out of Florida. The nonprofit, a trans-led organization called Traction, welcomed the couple with a place to sleep and money for moving.
But unbeknownst to Harmony, Traction was struggling, too.
Since the 2024 election, Traction has helped 1,500 trans people flee red states — more than 20 times the 70 people it aided before the election.

Wilson has said she will decide by the end of August whether to authorize a state of emergency, which could free up $2.1 million and create a program to help LGBTQ+ newcomers navigate the city’s social services. In a nearly three-hour council committee meeting in late June, commission members said that without the declaration, some LGBTQ+ organizations might close, further straining the city’s already overtaxed safety net.

Such a declaration would free up general fund dollars to bolster the nonprofits’ finances as they help transplants find housing and jobs.
“The conditions,” the commission wrote in a June 2 letter to Wilson and the City Council, “are an urgent policy concern and a life-and-death matter for internal displaced persons fleeing to Seattle for safety.”

If you’re hoping for relief in the humidity, you’re very much in luck. A weak frontal passage Monday afternoon does not bring us rain but it does drop dew points by 15 degrees to 23 degrees by the time you head home from work. Don’t get us wrong; it will still be hot, with air temperatures around 90 degrees but we will just will not be as swampy.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado in Winnebago County, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee. Damage was reported in cities including Appleton and Menasha, where Police Chief Matt Albrecht said a number of businesses and homes were “severely impacted.”

What other spooky things are going on around us? Do others on Mastodon live in spooky areas???
