This is why every city, county, & state should send a bill each month to for-profit companies for every dime of public assistance rec'd by their employees (not naming names).
No more fobbing labor costs off onto taxpayers. Every company persisting in paying sub-living wages should be punished with penalties & interest, too.
Companies (including corporations) that cost the city more than it generates in tax revenue for 2+yrs should be dissolved by the Sec of State & assets sold.
The real purpose of a system is what it does. And our system is not providing homes, food, medical care, or accurate education to people. It is doing something else.

From Strong Towns, a brief comment on a graphic going around social media showing the different priorities of Europe vs America when it comes to land use and transportation.
Europe, which focuses on mass transit, has a dense, vibrant, and varied skyline, whereas the American equivalent is a couple of tall buildings being the only useful and productive spot, surrounded by a lot of wasted space in the form of parking lots.
Wasted space. I said it.

This paragraph really jumped out at me, because it tells, in a nutshell, so much about what's wrong with american towns and suburbs - and the attitudes of the people brought up in this environment.
They think there's nothing wrong with this barren wasteland of forced automobile use - and yet they absolutely love going to Europe and the rest of the world to places that are *the exact opposite* of this.

I've wondered that too...why in the world surround accounts with no access to anything useful have three or four layers of security performances? Nobody wants to pay my bills so badly they'd be willing to hack a utility company site to do it.

Which isn't going to happen anytime soon. Many municipalities are forbidden by state law to adopt different min wage laws. Municipalities therefore need to take matters into their own hands in other ways to recoup taxpayer funds and punish sub living wage employers.

Stux, my love, the Fediverse has a freeloading problem that is going to have to be addressed. It's not sustainable.
It's time for *all* instances to start telling their members if they don't give at least $5 a month, their account will be suspended, and 30 days after that, it will be deleted.
There is nobody who can afford internet access that can't afford $5 a month.
(If someone is REALLY in bad shape they can apply for a *temporary* deferment from donating.)

We must prepare for a serious economic crisis this fall, if not sooner. The time to begin is now.
There are things that can be done personally, and at the local, regional & state levels.

There's some truth in what you say...but, I'm here today b/c my forebears decided to run away, with pretty much only what they could carry. Expecting laws, courts or even human decency to protect you when you're dealing with irrational religious based hatred is a great way to get your whole family killed or lose everything when they burn down your house. There's a reason Tennessee is going to publish where lgbtq folks live, and it's not so people can send them holiday gifts.

Went out to lunch with Hubby, to the craft store, and to the home store to look for a particular sized shelf. Then I waded through my emails & took notes on all the interesting articles and posted some here. We ate a very tasty dinner, prepared by my youngest son, and now I'm wasting more time in the Fediverse waiting for dessert time - homemade orange dream ice cream. Listening to Studio Ghibli piano music. Wondering if the wine is chilled yet (we forgot it). #3GoodThings

If you're outside of the US what are you doing about it? Why are nations not sanctioning the hell out of the US for violating the UN Declaration of Rights literally every single day? For bombing noncombatants in international waters? For illegal warmongering? When are other nations going to strip the US of security council & other international privileges? As long as other govts look the other way, our govt has no motivation to change. The people here have no rights now.

There's a huge market out there for not-enshittified software. Old school stuff that doesn't surveil you, doesn't store your stuff in the cloud against your will, stuff that doesn't even need the internet turned on to work.
You anti-AI tech guys need to get together to *make 2010 style software* & have your humanities major friends market it. All the popular stuff that's now crap: quickbooks, for example.
You don't compete with their junk, you make far more palatable alternatives.

You need to subscribe to hashtags. The fediverse as I understand it has never been about individual followers or influencers. It's about topics and conversations. Those happen across hashtags. By subscribing to hashtags, your feed is full of the topics you love. You don't have to follow people to see what's happening in any field.
PS - the converse of this is always put hastags at the end of your posts. (Not in the middle, which messes up screen readers.)

Anonymous reporting should be rejected. People should have to report suspe ted abuse or illegal activities in person and show their ID to the authorities, who can then conceal the identity from the accused - if the report pans out. If it doesn't, the authorities have the option to charge the one reporting if they find that it was done maliciously.
