@bittner@hachyderm.io @j9t@mas.to One time, CloudFlare did turn theirs into a DDoS platform aimed at them with that (by always demanding Origin: in subsequent requests, redirecting Origin:-less requests to the starting square). Nowadays, I think theirs also shows another horrible trend: it may be blank on browsers that support enough of it to run code that then fails with no visible sign. I see "Enable JavaScript and cookies to continue" with them, but I strongly prefer to browse with JS disabled, so that's why I at least get some text. These days, because Cloudflare only supports a handful of browsers, that means I just skip whatever site gives me that. Also: StackExchange is behind a Cloudflare check too now... sigh.

@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @beyondmachines1@infosec.exchange It's really expected - they're just adhering to the hype that Generative Autocomplete can do all things humans do. If they were at least adopting it as a *tool* and not joining that specific hype, they'd be able to see that problem right away, or at least avoid it...

#SAPO #enshittification

I really didn't pay much attention to the image, just read the text, which, yes, sounded like a reference to The Onion. It's silly that so many people find a need to attach images to a text, as if it can't be published if it has no image, LLM/GenerativeAutocomplete-generated or not. Even without GenAI in the picture, not doing this would spare them from some embarrassing "here's a completely wrong/unrelated image" moments :-) And yes, that WARN column looks quite fishy. Hey, at least the red flag is highlighted in red! (Kinda reminds me of the Xerox scanning issue where glyphs could end up replaced with different ones. @joho@mastodon.online @skulesz@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Now if I were to comment on train travel... Portugal is lacking cross-border long-distance travel - some will insist this is because it's not "profitable" or "sustainable", but there's still no night train out of Lisbon, nor some daytime Intercity-like service. IIRC there are currently two links, Celta (which could be described as a regional service, albeit labeled "International") and the regional Entroncamento-Badajoz (not considered "International"). Reportedly Renfe has had interest in extending services to Lisbon, and CP has had some degree of interest (or maybe it was preference?) in bringing back Sud. At the very least, a good night service would allow connecting with daytime higher-speed services once in Spain or France, and I seriously doubt it'd not have demand. Local travel isn't much better, part of the capital area has been for years with worse service on weekends and holidays, and besides less frequent services, this even includes a transfer with 23 minutes between trains in one direction of what is a route with high demand. There may currently be a shortage of rolling stock, but that doesn't explain the apparent slowness in putting long distance railcars back into service (there's reportedly a too big backlog of these, while Intercity services face high demand) or the above mentioned worse commuter service (the previous offering, much better, needed less rolling stock...). (A note re: .pt-.es cross-border travel, just in case anyone wonders about that: gauge is not the issue. ATP, electrification and certification are the stumbling blocks, but gauge has not been an issue for years with gauge changers and compatible rolling stock, including high-speed trainsets.)

@joho@mastodon.online @skulesz@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu A curious datapoint: back when there were price limits imposed on cell carriers for a migration towards no price differences when roaming, it resulted in Vodafone Portugal being cheaper to use abroad than within borders, because the pricing was *that* high. It was easy for me to understand the goal of these limits, yet it was also something that made it clear some prices were excessively high. Perhaps I could summarize that one as: not a problem with the measure, but an indication of another problem.

@mid_kid@fosstodon.org @mgorny@social.treehouse.systems IMHO speed/performance isn't the correct take from the source-based nature of gentoo, flexibility is (although it *is* possible to get performance improvements out of target-specific compilation). What in some other distributions might be a hard-coded choice that you must compile externally to change, in Gentoo might be just a USE flag, or even just a different package satisfying an alternative pseudo-package. But yeah, support for user-provided patches makes some hacking and testing even easier.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io A challenge is when will news outlets finally stop just boasting "de-escalating" every time ICE or other Trump administration officials say it, and start using the word only when there's something tangible, verifiable, true. But if I earned a dollar (adjust for inflation) by every time a news outlet got away with misinformation or misreporting because they were using the words which were originally said by some lying party... well, I'd be in a different tax bracket, I guess.

@jgoerzen BTW, I just noticed that in my notes from when I had to start setting consoleblank in some system (possibly from c. 2019--2020?), I have this: «Despite what the commit message regarding this change [1] says, consoleblank *does* trigger DPMS. [1] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=a4199f5eb8096d63828f7333fa45650a7b0a99ed » But it's likely I was missing something else that happened to make this also trigger DPMS. Notes also say "setterm --blank" seem to change the same value for all VTs, or at least triggers the same behaviour I was looking for.

(No, really, the way I see it, there are way too many things - at least in Android - that are a step backwards compared to Windows 98, and I'm aware that system is far from flawless (and that a non-locked-down UNIX-like system would be much better)... but at least you could install what you wanted to, you could access the whole filesystem, and you didn't need system changes to access application data).)

@jgoerzen You mean now e.g. setting consoleblank=X will really just produce a black screen after X seconds? (I don't think this is related to dri and kms, at least not only that. I'd have to check but I think some of the setups of mine where the linux virtual console could trigger screen sleep with older versions were using dri and kms? I had to do a hardware change and getting this set up was one of the things I've been postponing. Maybe I should look into this soon...)
