I think if we’re honest with ourselves, the “service” most reporters provide on social media is entirely self-serving. A one-way firehose of signal boosting and self promotion. “Look at me! I wrote this story. Click on it!” And then you ask them a question, or have a correction, and nobody reads it, because Wired doesn’t care about building a community, just reaching a consumer. It’s fire and forget. We already have a tool for that, it’s RSS. What value does reposting a link here provide?

The following is a toot about the 2024 DNC retrospective:

Ha! Haha.

Ahahahah. Hahahaahahahahahha! Hahahahahaha— oh god I can’t breathe, I — ahah, hahahaha.

Hoooo boy, haha. Oh my god hahaha haha. Haha aHahaHahAHaHAhaHHAHAHAHA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAAAAA! One second, I just— hahahaha— I just— ahahahahaha!

Ahhh. Okay. Haha. Phew.
Okay, I’m good.

…anyway we are so fucked.

At this point it doesn’t even matter if Trump attempts to walk back his threats to commit genocide in Iran.

It definitely doesn’t matter whether he, hypothetically, would choose nuclear weapons or conventional weaponry to do so.

The fact that he ever considered it— and over oil!— is enough to demand action.

We cannot “wait and see”.
We cannot risk that he might change his mind.
And we CANNOT keep living like this til 2028.

This lunatic must be removed.
Now.

What the FUCK are we doing?

What I hope I might be clumsily conveying is the digital equivalent of having a free sample bowl at the community park, versus an entire stockroom of unsold product in your store down the road. No one serious would try the argue that the existence of one implies permission to ransack the other. How many degrees of separation are necessary to imitate that structure on a computer? I dunno the answer, and maybe the question is stupid to begin with. lol

@odd@mstdn.social I’m not sure. I wasn’t on Twitter in the early days. By the time I got there it already sucked. lol I did get to experience invite-only Bluesky, but I can’t really comment on it from a reporting standpoint because I only used it to shitpost. Which was very community oriented, but totally devoid of professional value. Mastodon really is the only place I’ve had any interest in my work and I just assume that’s cause I’m pals with folks that live in Seattle here.

Whatever fair use argument you might attempt at The Billboard Site, has no reason to apply to The Place Where I Keep My Valuables dot com. Especially if I have separately communicated to your organization that the entirety of the latter is off limits, and that we are to have no relationship. I’m under no illusion that this would be some magic gotcha, but rather it might chip away at the means for plausible deniability.

My question: what is to say that de-indexing needs to be a binary decision? Is there not a way that I can create a decoy website— say, a barebones list of the sort of thing someone might receive from me— but quarantined from my actual website or content? Said page would serve to prove to a human that I exist, and tell them how to find it, but contain nothing of value to corporations. Meanwhile, the real site black-holes anything resembling a robot, and explicitly requests to be de-indexed.

All that is to say, if it is possible to block crawlers at all, it seems the primary reason we have not all done so is because we are all holding ourselves hostage to the idea of future, human traffic. And unfortunately, that arrangement is called an advertisement. (I find that as distasteful as you do, I promise). And the more I think about it, the more absurd it seems that, say, a classic banner ad circa 1995 would contain all of a websites content, too. What if one were to separate them?

@mcc@mastodon.social why should I go out of my way to make AI users feel included? Cant’t they generate their own audience and talk to that? :^) Mass blocking robots and their nannies is a victimless crime as far as I’m concerned

While I have you, here’s another hypothesis. I think such an arrangement might make it easier on us when, in the future, the law (hopefully) catches up to the technology. If I say you can have A, but your program takes A+B from the same website, that looks indistinguishable from you making a mistake of scope or permission. Oopsie, you say, that wasn’t malice, that was a bug. If the goods are quarantined on an entirely new server, on an explicitly de indexed site? You sought that out.

I would not be surprised to learn there’s already a term for this, and would be even less surprised to learn that it is a bad idea, or that it is ineffective at preventing bad behavior. Hell, I can even think of some new harms that filling the internet with such meat-shields might cause. But if there’s one thing I know about the fediverse, it’s that if I say something stupid out loud, a thousand of you will promptly correct me, and I might learn something interesting. :)

@DeliaChristina@sfba.social One thing about this poll which gives me pause is that their second chart, labeled “when given more context…” does not explain how they did that. The phrasing matters. We are taking them at their word that they did not lead the recipients into changing their answer. To be clear, I don’t doubt that many of my peers are shitty about this. It’s more that Politico isn’t showing their work, and their values as of late are not always sympathetic with leftist interests.

@OliviaVespera thanks, fam. Sometimes I feel like the phrase “personal brand” has just absolutely melted our minds. Surely the point of social media is to communicate with people? And surely the point of reporting is to do the same.

@Daojoan We’re also updating our user agreement (which you do not need to agree to). Effective immediately, each member of your household must purchase a seat in order to view our content. Briefly walking past the screen on the way to the kitchen now constitutes one use of our service. This change is retroactive. We have used AI to estimate how many people live in your house, and how many infractions you have likely committed (rounded up). A partner collections agency will be in touch shortly.

So I dunno, maybe we need to do one simpler. The only thing I really want from Google these days (and sadly, doubt I’ll even receive) is the opportunity for passerby to choose to visit me. You can’t choose an option you don’t know exists. The amount of information that I need to serve a corporation to make that option available seems like it’d be a hell of a lot smaller than “everything I have, for free”; especially if they can’t be honored not to fuck me with it.

The comments on the announcement(s) are already leaning into it. Most of them are what I can only describe as LinkedIn Grindset markov chains. A modern day mutation of “first!”, transparently attempting to siphon traffic from a high-traffic post. Meanwhile, my home feed is absolutely drowned in their new “quips” feature, which, let’s be clear, is just their branded name for short-form TikTok style videos.

As a creator, I just want to send a mailing list of people an email whenever I make something cool. Maybe a light comment system. As a patron, I want a trustworthy payment processor so I can send The Leftist Cooks five dollars. (You should also send the leftist cooks five dollars) I’m not *trying* to make these sound like shitty user stories, it’s just that the things I use Patreon for are so simple, and so contrary to the metrics they’re chasing, that it falls that way anyway.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether I want to continue charging for my work at all. A lot of that reflection is due to the anxiety from taking time off. I keep wondering if I’d be happier if I didn’t feel that pressure, and just wrote when I wanted to. But I also recognize that if I don’t start somewhere, and push through that discomfort, I will never be able to financially sustain myself with my work. I dunno what the right answer is.

@rhold I will say I’ve noticed an uptick in… not ads, exactly, but buttoned up branded “content” in the popular feed on .social. I’m curious how long the “no brands” vibe will last. Some days it’s like… Proton product announcement followed by Tuta product announcement followed by Open Office product announcement. It’s not overwhelming yet but it rhymes with social media as I’ve experienced it elsewhere. Makes me a little nervous.

All that is to say, I’ll be monitoring Patreon’s continued product panic while I figure it out. Bright side, if they continue to clone all of the social media gadgets that I specifically left those sites to escape, it might end up making the decision easier for me.

I’m also still wary of them as a company due to their handling of the “Apple tax”. Not that they complied with it— they hardly have a choice— but rather the way they started blasting my patrons with notifications to upsell their subscriptions, or change their billing frequency immediately afterward. Not only was that annoying, but it is still ambiguous to this day whether those prompts would make those subscriptions qualify as “having signed up via an iPhone”.

@phwolfe @odd Thanks for doing that work, fam. I know how thankless it is. It’s funny (not funny ha ha, but funny cry emoji) that the “nobody wants to pay for news but also they all demand it be accessible on Facebook” thing was called out in Elements of Journalism way back in 2014! Way, way before I got into the profession. The layoffs were also a problem then. And it’s only gotten worse. I dunno how to fix this. But I’m damn sure becoming Instagram won’t do it.

@Numerfolt The most direct is that, by creating a firehose of content, Patreon can get users to visit more often— not just when a creator they pay posts something, but ambiently, in order to find or buy things. (They now provide “merch” marketplaces for creators, too, I just never use them). Depending on what they want to boost, they can tweak that environment to maximize: sales and fees collected per user, engagement metrics for ad placement, or network-effect switching cost.

@vfrmedia @rhold yeah so I’m actually pretty happy to see FOSS tools here, so I look the other way for things like Open Office. I want them to be successful. I have however noticed that same tendency with adjacent brands (specifically Firefox) to not engage with the community, especially when the question is critical. (I do agree that this is not really a convenient place to submit but reports, it would create confusion for engineers, so I’m leaving that alone)

The spark for this idea is the, I dunno what you call them but, the maze-traps that people use for LLM’s currently, which poison those systems by creating fake content. That’s clever and seems like a good start, but now you’ve got good stuff and bad living in the same place. It seems like it might create accessibility nightmares, or feed a real human garbage if it hits a false positive, or else just be circumvented as corporations get more greedy.

@errant I will second the disparity between email updates and what is shown on the feed, so far. I also partook in a D&D map maker’s work recently, buying a single map from them as an individual purchase. Patreon took it upon themselves to: sign me up as a follower, add several similar artists to the feed, and constantly pushes notifications and emails to my device every time they sneeze. I will not make that mistake again.
