Legitimately my biggest worries are audio and video. I was not able to get far enough with NetBSD before my only means of networking stopped functioning to test things like audio. I also found out my networking went kaput when trying to install the package that let me use other screen resolutions... apparently you are locked to 1024x768 until you install an extra package that SHOULD BE something included in core??

@netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org I am using the USB boot method (from the guide: 2.2.6.1. Booting the install system from USB) with NetBSD-11.0-amd64-install.img (so, not the BIOS one). The command I used to write the image was sudo dd if=NetBSD-11.0-amd64-install.img of=/dev/sdd1 bs=1M status=progress conv=sync The USB stick is an AData UV350, which is what I had lying around. 32GB

A REDUCTIVE HISTORY OF THE CURRENT BROWSER MONOCULTURE 1998 🧙🏼‍♂️Internet Explorer sucks! It's closed source just like Netscape! Hmmm... I know! I'll make my own web browser engine! And I'll call it KHTML! Because I am a fucking wizard, and the true mascot of KDE! ⏳TIME PASSES 2000 🧙🏼‍♂️Shit that took longer than I thought, but it's done! And now Konqueror is our FOSS web browser solution! ⏳TIME PASSES 2001 🍎Internet Explorer sucks! But it's the only web browser we got for Mac OS X... ooh, what's this? KHTML? That'll be a good basis for our Webkit project and Safari browser... ⏳TIME PASSES 2013 🔍Internet Explorer sucks! It could have been more evil if it weren't for that pesky Mozilla! ...ooh, what's this? Webkit? We'll make it into our own thing, call it Blink, and make Chrome and Chromium take over the world! Ha ha! ⏳TIME PASSES 2018 🪟Internet Explorer sucks! And we even tried cleaning it up and giving it a facelift! ...ooh, what's this? Chromium? Yeah we can just rebadge this and take the easy route. ⏳TIME PASSES 2023 🐲So, bad news: we're discontinuing KHTML. But, good news: we're using Chromium instead for the HTML widget in Qt and Konqueror, which is a far more mature fork of KHTML! Thanks to Apple, Google, Microsoft, and everyone else for doing all the work for us! SUCKERS 🧙🏼‍♂️Why are you the mascot of KDE now? I'm the original fucking wizard! 🐲Kandalf I thought you went to work in Reelism 2, anyway you were fired for excessive swearing, and now I gotta call security

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt @MrDOS@hachyderm.io @plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org Yeah I had already read this first. The information seems really stale as it refers to Linux 2.6.x! :blobfox0_0: But even then, yeah it looks like Linux can *only* see the whole partition but not the individual slices... Hmmmm... I might reinstall and start over since the actual install was actually pretty fast. But, critical question: is it *MANDATORY* that NetBSD use FFS? Or can I use a different file system that might play nicer with Linux? I know ZFS is out of the question here, I already read the docs for that and it's messy.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt @plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org hhhhhh okay back on Linux, I can use fedi with a keyboard again and my phone not tethered to my comp... What on earth was going on? Everything was going good, but then when I finally got XFCE going, my internet lifeline went kaput and refused to come back. And even then, I would have rather gotten KDE going instead, but the official docs from NetBSD have nothing on getting it going. And now that I'm back on Linux... I can't access the new NetBSD disk? GNOME Disks sees it as "NetBSD FFS" but there's no option to mount it. Which is really bad because I need a way to move my home directory to NetBSD.

People on fedi: We need a new C compiler to get away from what's happening to GCC! Me: what about improving tack People on fedi: what https://tack.sourceforge.net/ The only issue is that it doesn't do x86-64 but, ehhh, it already targets the important stuff like SPARC and the 68K family and PowerPC and i386 if you really need x86

Alright, serious question for #NetBSD experts: is there any way to mount and access a BTRFS partition in NetBSD? I have been looking and looking and LOOKING for information about this, but keep finding crappy dead ends. I need some means of being able to mount two BTRFS partitions so that I can migrate the data to something that both Linux and NetBSD will use. Here is what I have found: 1) https://github.com/adam900710/btrfs-fuse A read-only FUSE driver for BTRFS. Appears to be Linux only? 2) https://github.com/rustutils/btrfsutils Buried in here is another read-only FUSE driver for BTRFS. Again, seems to be aimed at Linux only. 3) https://github.com/maharmstone/btrfs WinBtrfs, Windows-oriented... but is willing to relicense to make it BSD-friendly. https://github.com/maharmstone/btrfs/issues/531 4) https://github.com/lkl/linux/ Linux Kernel Library, aka LKL, which allows for using the Linux kernel as a FUSE driver. There is a version for FreeBSD: https://www.freshports.org/filesystems/lkl/ but even I, a complete newbie to the world of the BSD Boys, knows that FreeBSD and NetBSD are completely different operating systems, so I have no idea how portable this is to NetBSD. However if this DOES work with NetBSD, then this would be an excellent solution...

@eevee@slime.global the tl;dr as I understand it is basically: KDE tried to force through AI rules, user base wanted the rules to be "don't use them, period", one user called out a developer as being a literal nazi with proof, KDE locked the discussion and banned the person calling out the nazi, then banned the nazi one day later, and are now trying to damage control while also calling the user base not part of the community. It's a mess!

So I recently stumbled upon something called "Debian Time Capsule", which claims to be a recreation of CDE in the web browser... but it feels more like a bootleg version. https://debian.com.mx/ It's on GitHub: https://github.com/Victxrlarixs/debian-time-capsule and it's making me go 🤨 from the readme... But, if you're using actual CDE, the palettes included here are in the correct format and can be dropped into ~/.dt/palettes/ to give yourself a bunch of extra themes to pick from: https://github.com/Victxrlarixs/debian-time-capsule/tree/main/public/palettes

Status update on these: 1) and 2) nothing yet. Ideas, anyone? 3) Tried xfile, was not feeling it... will need to look around a bit more, I think I had seen something that fits the bill but I forget what it was called. 4) Still randomly crashy. I never get to catch it in the act because it's on another workspace. 5) picom was suggested, and it is helping! Probably need to fine-tune the settings.

Update! 1) Screenshotting works! See attached image. Though I may have messed up on the command or my keybind for screenshotting the currently active window. But pressing PrintScreen dumps a timestamped PNG image into ~/Pictures/Screenshots like I wanted. And unlike xwd, this can capture programs like Discord! I used maim to handle the capturing. 2) I think I got audio controls working as well! Turns out PipeWire comes with the CLI tools I needed in the form of wpctl. 3) Migrating to pcmanfm is going to be a lot of effort :blobfoxgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands: still just using Dolphin right now. 4 and 5) picom is now doing the compositing for dtwm, and this seems to have stabilized Discord as well as deal with the tearing issues. Hot damn!

There's a handful of things I still need to address, some of which might be out of my control: 1) Volume controls. I used the guide on the CDE wiki: https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/How%20to%20control%20the%20sound%20using%20pulse/ But I don't think it works with the knob on my 8bitdo keyboard? Unless newer tech like pipewire makes this obsolete, in which case we need a newer version of this guide. Or Oracle can donate the volume control app they made for CDE, HINT HINT 2) Screenshotting. xwd, ehh, works? But it's very clumsy and is polluting my home directory. Would be nice to have something that Just Works using well-known hotkeys, like the PrintScreen key. Even if it doesn't use the clipboard and just saves the image with a timestamped filename to a configurable directory would be fine. 3) File manager. Dtfile is a bit too basic for my needs. Looking for something with per-directory view settings, the ability to show items in groups, and ideally shortcut lists and tabs. I THINK there is a Motif-based file manager like this...? Otherwise I can try to just keep using Dolphin. 4) Discord's client. Uhm, it does not seem to like CDE very much? Stability issues and weird errors. Worst case scenario I switch to the web client in Waterfox, but having the actual client would be better. Also, Dtwm does not like it using Client Side Decorations very much... 5) Screen tearing. Yeah I've been noticing this a lot now. Maybe using compton for compositing could fix this? https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/Eye%20candy%20-%20CDE%20with%20the%20compton%20compositor/ Also in b4 "use Wayback", check the bug tracker
