@tante@tldr.nettime.org Libraries also try to avoid destroying books. If they have more of a title than they need, they may try to sell off the extra copies. If they're destroying a book, it's probably because that copy has gotten trashed in use.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au @TheBreadmonkey@beige.party Amazon is also holding about $140 billion in cash and short-term investments, according to their financial statements. So, yeah, some money manager decided it was cheaper for them to borrow than to spend their own money. Businesses do this kind of thing all the time. But it means that even Amazon has finite resources--they can't realistically spend hundreds of billions without having any idea how that is coming back.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Yes, no one really knows. In order to make R districts everywhere, these states have had to spread their majority pretty thin in some places. Which means it sill comes down to turnout, good candidates, the usual things. Gerrymandering and voter suppression have worked well for them in the past, but there may be a limit.

@Qybat@batchats.net @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green This might start changing a little bit. At least, when 'cloud' services started being a thing, providers sold it as unlimited. Enterprise customers didn't have to curate. There was always more space to dump into. Now the providers are like 'wait didn't mean unlimited forever.' The limits are still large, but now there's a ceiling where there wasn't one before.

@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange When I worked for Mamillan in New York, my wage was not really a 'living' wage. (They were notoriously cheap in those days.) And it is a wage, a work-for-hire deal. If the book sells a little, or a lot, it is the same fee. When I was freelancing, I didn't always get a lot of choice about what I was working on. I mean if a production editor called me up and said, please proofread this vampire romance novel for no money, of course the answer would be no. It's not my book, I have no ownership interest in it. Do you think writers should be paid the same way? I mean, some writers do work that way. They get assignments, they get a fee, they do the job and walk away.

But poking around the hardware store website, I'm wondering if you could use a smaller box fan (they have a 9" one) and one of those cylinder-type filters that are made to go in one of the floor-standing purifiers. I've got a Bissel unit that works okay but it's upstairs in my wife's room now.

@mawhrin@circumstances.run This may be slightly tangential to your complaint, but I oversee ebook production for a uni press. Our conversion vendors are all-in on developing AI-based systems for providing alt-text. We've tried it for some of our backlist (where we can't go back to the author), and as you might guess, it's not great. So I have to review and edit the results. It will not surprise you that when it is wrong it can be very wrong. I've got a list of a few hundred titles I need to process. This will not be fun. I envision that at some point, the reading systems are going to try to implement doing this on the fly. That's going to suck.

@mawhrin@circumstances.run @cwebber@social.coop Yeah, it seems way more sympathetic to Zuck than he deserves. He's rich because FB is a river of ad money. He's bought up any competitor that might divert the river of ad money. The real reason no one wants to use the Metaverse is that he created it for the river of ad money, and didn't think about any actual human users. He's unable to create anything of actual value to anybody.

@renardboy@mastodon.social @harld@masto.ai Is 'efficiency' in the sense of cost reduction and 'efficiency' in the sense of use reduction always the same? I work as a production editor in a publishing office, and we're pretty much paperless. I never print out a damn thing. There are certain advantages for using Word files and pdfs all along the way--usually fewer typos in the finished product. But, being old enough to remember doing it all on paper--even doing layouts with waxers and x-acto knives--I can say that the *process* of editing and proofreading are worse, less efficient, slower, than marking paper by hand.
