@megmac@social.treehouse.systems I have been thinking idly that the forced move to LLMs is a way to return personal computing back to a client/server model. Today, you ask the computer to do something and it grinds away and does it. Tomorrow, when you ask your thin client to do something, some computer in Indiana does it, and charges your credit card too. Computers are too powerful now, there aren't enough paywalls. Moving more computing back to the server makes you a microserf again.

This is Linus (and all of big tech) looking out at society and telling us that we will get robbed and we can do nothing about it. Our labor WILL be turned into slop, and billion dollar companies, open source projects, medical journals, public health agencies, military - they will all use it without fear or shame.

Still, I wrote up my thoughts around this weeks ago and it has only gotten worse since then: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2025/12/17/AIs-unpaid-debt-how-llm-scrapers-destroy-the-social-contract-of-open-source.html Is open source/free software over? It is really starting to feel like if people try, they won't be offered any protections - it will totally be a situation where we are just doing free labor for companies.

Thought experiment. Linus tells us that the #Linux project uses #opensource because it results in "better technology". Does that mean that if some superior closed source kernel sources became available Linux would merge it? Clearly, since Linux has never been a "social warrior" project, it shouldn't matter if the code is pirated, since technical merit is paramount. If we say no, how is that different from using copyright encumbered #LLM sources? https://lore.kernel.org/linux-media/CAHk-=wi4zC+Ze8e+p3tMv8TtG_80KzsZ1syL9anBtmEh5Z40vg@mail.gmail.com/

Clearly, they are the suckers who stood by for ideological reasons (silly!). Now, it's time to conquest for people who would rather see you and your kind dead (literally), but you want to make common cause with them because nothing really matters except their bonuses. Guess there's nothing in the employment contracts about damaging the brand.

@mwichary@mastodon.online @jla@typo.social Just use a web browser and test in the rest. The Firefox based ones should be fine (and gets you the largest alternative on desktop). Webkit based browsers are the only ones on iOS mobile, so not testing there is neglecting where a likely huge portion of users are (depending on your userbase). Chrome is kind of a superset of the web, so I would personally say you are better off with something that does less.

To me, it seems clear that the reason that Linux has more activity and driver support than the BSDs is because of copyleft and reciprocity - two aspects of "social justice" that protected contributors from their code being used without giving back. I wrote about this a while ago: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2026/04/08/ai-code-is-hollowing-out-open-source-and-maintainers-are-looking-the-other-way.html but it feels like with the advent of #AI people are willing to look the other way to access the technical contributions of people who never consented to their works being infringed.
AI Code is Hollowing Out Open Source, and Maintainers are Looking the Other Way
Youssuff Quips

AI Code is Hollowing Out Open Source, and Maintainers are Looking the Other Way

TL;DR: The advent of AI based, LLM coding applications like Anthropic’s Claude and ChatGPT have prompted maintainers to experiment with integrating LLM contributions into open source codebases.

RE: https://sfba.social/@janetc/116965092468874813 Clearly, this is the dark side of insincere virtue signalling - you will get punished by people who expect you to actually demonstrate your virtue. When you ultimately fail since it wasn't sincere to begin with, you end up in the same pool as everyone else - with those who never claimed any kind of virtue. Anyway, maybe this is just a shift for #Mozilla #Firefox - new CEO, mask off to totally scrape the barrel of whatever goodness was left in its userbase. Then, off to conquest for Nazis! 🎉

Thoughts on #opensource that allows for #LLM contributions. Even for projects where I am continuing to use the upstream project - #firefox / #librewolf, #jellyfin - the first thing I've done is to stop eating the freshly made dogfood. Jellyfin has an RC out. In the past, I might have tested it. Likewise, my main browser for years had been Firefox Nightly. No longer. The first shoe to drop is engagement - why should I test what #AI wrote? I'll let other people eat the slop instead.

I don't think the feature is useful as designed unless you are a terrorist or freedom fighter, since if you are an American, you have the right to not self incriminate (always) so the data on disk is secure from exfiltration - if there aren't any known exploits. Hence why I asked who the feature was for and for what use case.

The arguments for who is allowed to use this feature and the rest obscure (imo) that this feature was never safe for this circumstance.

@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social I think focusing on Servo is a mistake, unless you think you can get together a full time staff of engineers over a long period - that is what Mozilla and Google have, as does Microsoft (and they got out of the engine game). Otherwise, we just have a toy browser and have to go use the mainstream Firefox based browser anyway, and you keep the same duplication of effort that you were trying to initially solve.

@indivisibleteam@mastodon.social I don't think what Mr. McKenzie says is accurate. After all, Trump's crypto grift is continuing apace, even with crypto not being regulated by the CFTC. The corruption angle is clearly orthogonal in that sense. The larger issue is that the crypto industry is now supported on a bipartisan basis (see Kirsten Gillibrand's son): https://nypost.com/2026/06/19/business/kirsten-gillibrands-22-year-old-son-raises-30m-for-trading-startup-as-dem-champions-crypto-in-dc/ and will likely continue to be, as long as there are greater fools to take advantage of.

@z3r0@gts.maverick-hq.org No, I think you are missing that putting your GPL code out there means that it will be transformed into code for multitudes of other projects, both "open" and closed. That is new, since it wasn't possible before to have a machine automatically transform stolen code to best fit the problem you have - previously, you had to be able to find the code and understand it well enough to integrate it. Today, the chatbots do it with a prompt and virtually no effort.
