This is what a Houthis attack did to a pipeline pumping station on the Saudi's E/W pipeline. Yeah, that's not coming back into operation anytime soon. It's run the Hormuz gauntlet or nothing.

@mrundkvist@archaeo.social I saw a man with a PHD in his profile talk about using a LLM for research and how he was getting great results because HE knew how to ask it for what he wanted. He was basically prompting it with something like "Constrain your result to only articles with citations. Prove this to me by supplying the citations."

The story on Lindsey Graham now appears to be sudden aortic dissection, which is very different from the "brief and sudden illness" statement released by his office previously.

@drewph@ieji.de @didgebaba@c.im Yeah, from what I can see the dating of these is extremely conjectural and based on ideas of historic water levels and what those levels might have been in different epochs. This isn't like they found organic dateable remains. How old these are doesn't seem to at all be a settled matter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewarrina_Aboriginal_Fish_Traps#Age_of_the_fish_traps

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange A four panel corsi box also takes up significant space in a room. You can still get significant filtration from taping a single filter to a box fan, particularly if you go with 2 or 4" thick pleats to reduce resistance. If you are really strapped for cash and need something now because of wildfires, a single or dual filter setup reduces the upfront cost and still provides major benefits in the amount of smoke particulates going into your lungs. https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/one-filter-cr-box/

@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social One problem is that the title of Count doesn't exist in the English peerage and Earl Binface doesn't have quite the same ring. Maybe he would accept the lesser title Viscount Binface? Is there a Mrs Binface? Strangely, the wife of an Earl is a Countess, so we could have a Countess Binface. Lets do that.

@drewph@ieji.de @didgebaba@c.im There is this cave in Greece which can be shown by scientific dating methods to have been inhabited since about 50k years ago. It seems to have had a wall built as a windbreak about 23k years ago. Even if the Brewarrina traps were as old as a few seem to think they are, the wall in the Greek cave would be an older human built structure. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theopetra_Cave

@ludovic@chabant.social I now buy new phones mainly after I've replaced the battery a few times, it is no longer software supportable or something is cracked/broken. I can't remember the last time I bought a new phone because of a new and compelling feature, because innovation in this space is virtually dead.

I used to wonder why humanity changed to live underground and became the Morlocks in the HGW's Time Machine. The present war between Ukraine and Russia has supplied a hypothetical answer. Drones represent a "pure" offensive weapon which is very difficult to defend against 100% and thus any target is vulnerable if you want it badly enough.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange This video is okay on the subject, but I highly recommend adding a fan shroud to most box fans for greatly improved performance. You can cut one out of the cardboard the box fans came in or just use tape to mask the areas. I also found box strapping tape to be easier to work with than duct tape. https://www.texairfilters.com/how-to-improve-the-efficiency-of-the-box-fan-and-merv-13-filter-air-cleaner/

The really stupid part about this is this giant oil tanker which is now on fire, full of oil, had previously gotten out in early July after being stranded in the gulf and the ownership appears to have decided to send it in for more oil during the MOU. Looks like it got hit at around 7:30 last night while 8nm off Oman. The timing suggests to me that it was trying to use proximity to sunset to try and hug the Oman side and run with AIS off.

Some from the old metropolis which has many intact depictions of saints and a very expansive series lining the top of the building taken from the death and resurrection of Christ. The present structure is dated to the 11th century due to the presence of a main entrance inscription containing the name of the founding bishop from that time. The frescoes are 13th c and were both marred and preserved due to the church being converted to mosque in the Ottoman period and plastered over.

I might revist both churches if they are open again to check the frescoes out in different lighting. Hard to check them out all at once due to the sheer square footage. There is another church which is only open on Tuesdays on request that also looks interesting.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I'd rather a system that allows for popular removal of a sitting President. We could simply hold an annual federal election with a y/n question of whether the current POTUS should remain if office. If they lose the popular mandate, they're out and the VP is in. We should never be in a situation where the holder of the executive office can make a move towards tyranny.

@timkmak@journa.host International law extending refugee protection status to civilians fleeing from war zones should be non-discriminatory. This is discrimination based on age and apparent gender. It's an assertion that males of a certain age have some sort of obligation to fight and put themselves at risk. One can argue that civilian males not engaged in the fighting are more likely to be targeted by aggressors. This has proven abundantly true in the targeting of male Palestinian non-combatants in Gaza.

@Andii @pluralistic You sometimes see this sort of arrangement with people building off-grid cabins and the like. They'll have multiple arrays of solar panels oriented differently feeding into their battery banks, so that their banks begin recharging as early in the day as possible after their battery banks have gotten low from running their heat pumps, refrigerators, hot water heaters, etc. overnight.

I think it really goes to the heart of just how fucked up things are in the US that it is seriously in doubt that a major figure of the US Senate is still alive and that the possibility exists that a fiction is being advanced for political conveniences. This is some Soviet Union level bullshit, where the world would watch the Moscow Victory Day parades to see who was still alive and in what degree of favor.

@thomholwerda I wonder if the motivation is similar to the supply chain attacks Notepad++ recently. It's a tool that's very commonly used by developers and more than averagely techie people, so an infection on their computer is probably much more valuable in terms of being able to pivot within say a corporate infrastructure than your average computer. I seriously wonder if this Mac binary is trojanized in some way.

@ossington Just the storage costs alone are insane. Chrome runs on literally billions of PCs. Some back of the napkin math puts the storage requirements at about half a million of the largest hard drives on the market just to store this amount of data. Remember the story about Steve Jobs absolutely haranguing early Apple engineers to be as efficient as possible to try to shave like half a second off the boot process, because multiplied by millions of computers, we are talking human lifetimes.

@RVLara23 @allanfriedman I can see arguments against earlier vaccination, such as that later in life you might have more waned protection, but in many cases that can be fixed with a booster. To me, that many people seem to be getting flare-ups of this earlier than at 50 years of age and we also have new data showing that this vaccination may be very important in protecting against dementia make me strongly believe that the schedule for when to get this vaccine should be moved up.

People don't get the significance of the Trump Decoy story. Trump made public announcements of switching from the Qatar-bribe 747 to the older Air Force One because of security concerns. He made a public show of boarding that plane and then was secreted out the back reportedly in a catering container, which was then transported across the airport via a catering vehicle and loaded about a C-32A executive transport plane (usually used as Air Force Two or transporting the Secretary of State).

@RVLara23 @allanfriedman There is also evidence that Shingles vaccination is associated with substantially loweres rates of dementia, so it looks like that "It's just the chicken pox" virus that everybody is so casual about in children may in fact, have very profound impacts on the course of their lives. I was not vaccinated for chickenpox and both my brother and I got it. Now I have to worry about Shingles. I may attempt to get vaccinated for it even while I'm traveling.

@RVLara23 @allanfriedman Since the start of the covid pandemic, I now know two people below the age of 50 who have gotten bad Shingles outbreaks in the wake of covid infections. Basically Covid suppresses your immune system and it's often enough to allow latent viruses in your system to flare up. I seriously think in the wake of this common occurrence, that standards of vaccination should change and the age to get vaccinated lowered.

@cbcnorth_mirror@mastodon.hongkongers.net More insanity from BC, with an isolation period that corresponds to about the median period in which symptoms appear (believe 18 days to be frequently cited). This bug can manifest months after you acquire it. Also, isolation is for separating sick people from the general public. Quarantine is separating potentially sick people from the public. This is an extremely important technical distinction.

The many intact rock cut graves and masoleums in the area have yielded many treasures for the local museum, including quite the collection of ceramic statuary and jewelry. There are also some pretty artifacts from some neolithic sites nearby. One of the sites dates to the 7th millennium BC. There are also Hellenic and Roman busts galore. Worth the 5 Euros for a gander and a break from the heat.
