For those in the UK puzzled why we Americans are so distraught over the passing of Dolly Parton: try to remember how you felt when you heard Queen Elizabeth had died. Then imagine how much worse it would have been if Queen Elizabeth had ever helped anyone

Someone accused me of "clout farming on this platform," which is amusing. How much do you think clout on Mastodon is worth? Tell the maître d' you're a big deal on Mastodon and see if it gets you a better table

“Responding to a user who wrote that ‘every year I’m sad to learn that next season won’t be the book where he kills his way through a white supremacist militia camp,’ Ritchson explained that the novel (titled ‘Die Trying’) is his ‘favorite book.’ ‘Fun fact: I had it approved until someone got re-elected.’”

"In the ’90s, you had a lot of people entering the [tech] scene who came from other places—by which I mean they’d actually read a novel that wasn’t Tolkien, they’d actually been to a museum and not just seen really bad CGI art, they had truly diverse backgrounds. I see much less of that now. You see people who started coding when they were in fifth grade, that’s all they’ve ever done, and they have no context or background to frame the other things they hear."

Noticed in my local pharmacy today that they were having an absolute wall-to-wall, full-court press to get people to take the new flu vaccine. Signage everywhere; the point-of-sale system asked me if I wanted to schedule a flu shot; so did the pharmacist. When I said I’d prefer to get one later, the pharmacist set up a text message reminder for me. Just a real effort from everyone to make sure I knew there’s an updated flu vaccine and convince me to get it. I was impressed.
There’s also an updated COVID vaccine. Absolutely none of the points and people urging me to get the flu vaccine even mentioned it

“There is one particularly notorious war game from 1979, the Campaign for North Africa, a board game so detailed, complex and cumbersome to play that it is thought that no one has ever actually finished it (including its creator).
“Now two guys from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, are trying. James Purcell and Andrew Taeger have spent nearly two years just mastering the rules and practicing, and they are ready to start playing the game for real. Finishing it could take decades, if it doesn’t drive them mad first.”

The crazy thing about this kind of capitulation is that it's happening in August 2026.
The last time we went around this particular bend was in February 2025, with the "Gulf of America" stupidity. I didn't like the way the mapping companies fell in line with that, but I could understand it. Trump had just won re-election, he was swinging his power around wildly, and it was unclear that anything could stop him. Who wants to be the first one to walk into a buzzsaw?
But that was then and this is now. Today Trump and his agenda are as unpopular as any president in modern times has ever been, and we have a long list of times when people have challenged his agenda in the courts and won. Both law and politics are pushing against Trump, not with him.
So in August 2026 if you get a threat from Trump and just immediately roll over, that's not something you can claim is just you being pragmatic. There are plenty of tools you could use to defend yourself lying around in plain sight; you're just choosing not to use any of them.

"Why is Donald Trump so hot and bothered for the Fed to lower interest rates?"
Donald Trump is at heart a real estate con man. Real estate con men take their marks for sums of money large enough that the marks usually have to borrow it. Low interest rates mean money is cheap to borrow, which makes life easier for real estate con men. To a real estate con man, low interest rates mean good times. (For them, anyway. The mark gets busted out, but the con man doesn't care about that.)
There are probably other reasons too, but I'm not sure you really need any more to explain things

So it turns out the fridges and freezers in military base commissaries across the U.S. are connected to the Internet, and some hacker has been putting them into defrost mode and letting the food spoil

I ❤️ Software, Volume whatever
Web-based software product sends me a VERY STERN EMAIL telling me my email domain authentication settings are wrong and need updating
I spend two hours going over them with a microscope. Everything looks fine per the vendor's specification
I file a support ticket with the vendor asking "hey, can you tell me what is actually wrong here"
Vendor replies saying "We looked over your setup and everything looks correct"
Days later, vendor sends me the exact same VERY STERN EMAIL again
I file another support ticket asking "hey, why did I get this email again, can you confirm everything is really correct"
Vendor replies saying "oh yeah, we couldn't figure out how to only send that email to people with invalid configs so we just send it to everyone"

In summary: MARRIED TO THE MOB (1988), directed by Jonathan Demme, written by Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burns. Four stars, would watch again.
It's streaming on the Criterion Channel now, but if you don't get that you can stream it from lots of other places too. Consult your local listings.
