So yeah, it’s not “historical” but “mythical”. (Also remember “legends are lessons that “ring” of truth” or something like that, where actual events were exaggerated by retelling them to the point of myth). It still makes me laugh 🤣

@gwynnion@mastodon.social 💯 exactly, I keep hearing people argue this point and I look at them and ask “do you even know what type of soil *is arable* and what it would take to grow anything on it?” But no, they only know how people made the prairie land into crop land and completely forgot how much of the rest of the northern hemisphere had been destroyed to make “fields” out of “forests”. Farming is tough, growing things, tough, & if they think “technology” will solve all of it… they have no idea

@tvaziri@mastodon.social this is very similar to my “discussions” with my husband and other people about “machine rearranging data” … they seem to think that their statements are perfect “bookends” to an argument… but they make me ask MORE QUESTIONS 😹 and yes, those statements aren’t satisfactory answers in any way!

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social You could always put up a paper sign saying “please don’t disturb” or “please keep the noise down” so people passing by can try to be quieter 😹 Even at the college library I had kids who would be talking loudly while I was studying (and really, schools should have a place to make zoom calls where the noise is less yet people can still talk, quietly!)

@freakboy3742@cloudisland.nz That’s a perfect idea for proofreading! I try to adjust font size so others can see, but depending on the projector and room size it’s hard to judge with a laptop screen. Making sure the font is contrasting well with the background helps ( i .e. background is a picture and font is white, the picture has to be dim so the font stands out) but this makes so much more sense!

@drwhax@infosec.exchange China is building data centers every month, run on so much solar & wind energy that they produce. They are running campaigns everywhere else for other countries to not build them. Once they have greater computing capacity than needed they can control the entire electric communications systems. We need to run a system of clean energy & better cooling systems for data centers if we want to live the life we know/have known. China doesn’t share, it exploits. (Sorry for the rant 😹)

@drwhax@infosec.exchange Do I want more data centers the way they are run right now by private companies? No. But we need to do it better and more efficiently than them or else… no computer or device will be safe. I really think we need this discussion more. And more done about it

@drwhax@infosec.exchange This certainly rings a bell!😹 The electricity part needs to be supplied by solar and wind energy which China showed us that it can work tremendously well!!! Also, I love to point out that recent studies suggest that the amount of land needed to be covered by solar voltaic systems to supply the energy the country needs is a fraction of what is ALREADY COVERED by asphalt and buildings. We can do this if we put our minds to it!!!

But this shouldn’t be a problem because you want to “choose the best candidate” right? Now it just looks like they want “loyalty badge” for this stupid party system 🫩

@drwhax@infosec.exchange I also had a serious discussion with my husband this morning about llms and particularly genAi. What I took away from it was the data centers that we’re building now here are not efficient or ethical (imo) we need to make them efficient and ethical for security reasons. The vulnerability issue is immensely important here. While private companies are making Ai terrible and data centers by them are even worse, there needs to be more change in how it all works before we lose it altogether.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io I also want to add to the information of Firefox having trouble with a few websites that I use regularly 😹 Vivaldi works perfectly with all of these websites. I have yet to try waterfox and etc , but at least Vivaldi works perfectly for me!
