We gain on average 800 new followers per year, but in the last year (since before Linus made the GenAI-code-in-Linux posts) we gained around 1200.
It's great to see the wave of new interest. We're a community that's had 30 years to develop its culture, and things here might work a little bit differently than you expect. But don't let that discourage you from getting involved. This mastodon-account-manager first became a developer in 2018, and it's easily one of the best things she ever did.

We make a fast and secure open source Unix-like operating system for all of your computing devices, whether they be Raspberry Pis, EdgeRouters, ThinkPads, servers, or SPARCstations. Check the about page: https://www.NetBSD.org/about/
We pioneered cross-platform package management with #pkgsrc, anykernels, and TCP/IP in space. We move slowly and make things that last.

@82mhz@mastodon.bsd.cafe Complete the installation without doing this step.
After the installation is finished, follow the instructions here:
https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-virt.html#chap-virt-guest-ipv6
then run sysinst from the installed system. Select "config menu" and it will give you the option to "Enable installation of binary packages".

@JdeBP@mastodonapp.uk @phlash@mastodon.me.uk @jaypatelani@bsd.network Yeah ideally you want both because some ports need disklabels to boot, and if you're formatting a FAT-32 USB drive for example you probably don't want GPT.

@gourd@indieverse.social What sound applications have you been trying? 99% shouldn't need PulseAudio to work.
Have you set the default device to the non-HDMI one?

@MrDOS@hachyderm.io @techokami@woof.tech @nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt @plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca Yes, that's correct, you should never mount a NetBSD FFS partition as anything other than read-only under Linux.
Safe ways to share files offline across OS installs in base include ext2 and fat32. Various FUSE file systems are also available, like NTFS, but I haven't personally tried them.

@ND3JR@social.coop Raspberry Pi (when used without UEFI) needs a kernel in a custom format for its special firmware, this kernel is stored as /boot/netbsd.img from what I remember. Since it's in a different location from usual, it's possible it didn't get updated. You can pull the SD card out and update it by hand.

@farooqkz@mastodon.bsd.cafe If you offer it on the mailing list, you'd be able to see if anyone wants one. It's more efficient than sending it to us and then us having to find a developer who wants one.

@sherbang@chaos.social @eloy@hsnl.social The release of AFL was the big one. Technically it was late 2013, but took a while to take off. We started getting a barrage of fixes in 2015.

@techokami@woof.tech Yes, in the case that your resolution is predetermined by the firmware, you follow these steps. https://wiki.netbsd.org/tutorials/x11/how_to_use_wsfb_uefi_bios_framebuffer/

it's controlled by the ClickToFocus/SloppyFocus settings in ctwmrc, but the answer is that mouse focus is traditional for unix. We ship xedit too for a simple text editor in base.

Apparently, we get notifications when people add us to collections now.
Apparently, someone added us to a collection called "Linux Distros & Desktop Environments", which is of course Deeply Unacceptable.

@xilatsad@yiff.life I also understand it as accounting for things that can't possibly fall under any reasonable person's understanding of copyright; stuff like whitespace-only changes.
